  • This paper presents the analysis of the analysis of thrust characteristics of linear induction motors(LIMs) according to secondary reaction plate. LIMs are well known as high speed transport systems, which can obtain thrust directly without gears and links, or auxiliary mechanisms. A simple structure, easy maintenance, and less environmental pollution are advantages of LIMs. In transport systems using LIMs, the secondary reaction plate is an important design factor, because it has considerable impact on the cost of the railway as well as the performance of the LIMs.

  • This study was investigated to determine antimutagenic effects of enzymatic browning reaction products (PEBRPs) obtained by reaction of polyphenol compouns with oxidase extracted from potato. Catechol (Ca) PEBRPs showed the strongeest inhibitor effects with 90% inhibition on benzo-($\alpha$)-pyrene(B($\alpha$)P) induced mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, but he least with40% inhibition on the 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) induced mutagenesis in TA98. The strong antimutagenic activities with 80% inhibition were observed in the presence of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate of hydroquinone(HQ)-PEBRP on the B($\alpha$)P or 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole(Trp-P-1) induced mutagenesis in TA98, whereas HQ-PEBRP showed the least antimutagenic effect on 2-AF-induced mutagenesis. The addition of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$ hydroxyhydroquinone(HHQ)-PEBRP to the plate led to approximately 82% inhibitory effects on 2-AF or Trp-P-1 induced mutagenesis in TA98, whereas the least antimutagenicity was obsrved in the4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(4-NQO) induced mutagenesis in the presence of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate of HHQ-PEBRP. More than 80% inhibiton were observed in the presence of 200$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate of Pyrogalol(Py)-PEBRP on the B($\alpha$)P or Trp-P-1 induced mutagenesis in TA98, but the least with 38% inhibition on 4-NQO induced mutagenesis in TA98. The results indicate that enzymatic browing reaction products of potato have a strong modulatory effect on mutagen induced mutagenesis in TA98.

  • A biomechanical approach was carried out to analyze foot-floor reaction forces acting on five male subjects performing a walking task. The task analyzed was walking over an obstacle with the right bare foot. The foot-floor reaction data were measured from a force plate, and then processed using a software developed. The source program was coded in the C language for easier on-line data acquisition and graphic displays. High repeatability was found in the reaction data acquired from three trials by each subject. For obstacle height from 0 to 25 cm, the maximum in reaction force reached up to 1.048 BW in the vertical, 0.174 BW in the anterior-posterior, and 0.054 BW in the medio-lateral components, respectively. A quantity was defined by the difference between two vertical reaction values, and this quantity was found to be proportional to the obstacle height. It was also shown that the whole body motion could be predicted the measured foot-floor reaction data.

  • In this paper, topology optimization (TO) is applied to find a new configuration for the perforated steel plate shear wall (PSPSW) based on the maximization of reaction forces as the objective function. An infill steel plate is introduced based on an experimental model for TO. The TO is conducted using the sensitivity analysis, the method of moving asymptotes and SIMP method. TO is done using a nonlinear analysis (geometry and material) considering the buckling. The final area of the optimized plate is equal to 50% of the infill plate. Three plate thicknesses and three length-to-height ratios are defined and their effects are investigated in the TO. It indicates the plate thickness has no significant impact on the optimization results. The nonlinear behavior of optimized plates under cyclic loading is studied and the strength, energy and fracture tendency of them are investigated. Also, four steel plates including infill plate, a plate with a central circle and two types of the multi-circle plate are introduced with equal plate volume for comparing with the results of the optimized plate.

  • The detection of Bordetella bronchiseptica which is supposed to be an agent of the infectious atrophic rhinitis of swine, is likely to receive more attention in the future as the pork industry comes to realize that eradication of this infection from breeding herds is a practical possibility. Experiments described here were carried out to establish the rapid plate agglutination test for the detection of the infectious atrophic rhinitis of swine in the field using the criteria of antigen preparation, effects on the antigenecity after storing of the antigen and reaction appearing time. Also, the agglutinabilities between the plate and tube method were compared and the degree of pathological lesions were recorded in relation to tube agglutination titers. Obtained results were as follows: 1. No differences were noted in the agglutinabilities on the plate agglutination test between the treatments in antigen preparation-formolized, merthiolate-killed and living organism. 2. The agglutinability of the antigens did not show any significant changes until 10 weeks of storage at 4 C; however, after 10 weeks of storage, non-specific reaction was observed with the HPCD control sera. 3. The results of the plate and tube agglutination tests were not comparable but the effective use of the plate method in Bordetella bronchiseptica eradication programs in pigs especially in the sow is stressed as a screening test.

  • MFC(microbial fuel cell) is the device to produce the electricity by using the microbes which are living in the waste water. In this paper, the electric characteristics of the MFC were investigated according to each different structure and electrode materials. The voltage being reversed phenomenon was observed in the MFC which uses the cupper plate as the cathode material. This result comes from the oxidation reaction of the cupper plate electrode in this MFC. And this MFC has lower output voltage than one that has a platinum plate electrode. The smaller gap distance of the cupper plate electrode of the MFC showed the higher output voltage. The larger electrode area of the cupper plate electrode showed that the reaching time of the output voltage to the maximum value was delayed.

  • A four-noded plate bending quadrilateral (PBQ4) and an eight-noded plate bending quadrilateral (PBQ8) element based on Mindlin plate theory have been adopted for modeling the thick plates on elastic foundations using Winkler model. Transverse shear deformations have been included, and the stiffness matrices of the plate elements and the Winkler foundation stiffness matrices are developed using Finite Element Method based on thick plate theory. A computer program is coded for this purpose. Various loading and boundary conditions are considered, and examples from the literature are solved for comparison. Shear locking problem in the PBQ4 element is observed for small value of subgrade reaction and plate thickness. It is noted that prevention of shear locking problem in the analysis of the thin plate is generally possible by using element PBQ8. It can be concluded that, the element PBQ8 is more effective and reliable than element PBQ4 for solving problems of thin and thick plates on elastic foundations.

  • The effect of physico-electrochemical properties of carbon bipolar plate(BPP) on hydrogen and formic acid fuel cell performance has been investigated. BPP made of conventional graphite and carbon fiber composite were compared with the factors of interfacial contact resistance (ICR), corrosion behaviours, and hydrophobicity. Among them, the ICR of carbon fiber composite BPP has 50% higher than conventional graphite and the surface of carbon fiber composite BPP became rougher due to weaker corrosion resistance. Fuel cell performance was strongly dependent of ICR value of carbon bipolar plate.

  • The isoparametric element method is used for a plate on non-homogenous foundation. The surface displacement due to a point force acting on the non-homogeneous foundation is the fundamental solution. Based on this analysis, the interaction between the foundation and plate can be determined and the reaction of the foundation can be treated as the external force to the plate. Therefore, only the plate needs to be divided into some elements. The method presented in this paper can be used in cases such as thin or thick plate, different plate shapes, various loading, homogenous and non-homogenous foundations. The examples in this paper show that this method is versatile, efficient and highly accurate.

  • Paper focuses on comparison between two different orifice plate configurations (plate number 1 and plate number 2) used as cavitating device in the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor for improving pollutant removal efficiencies. Effect of four different parameters such as hydraulic characteristics (in terms of range of flow rates, orifice velocities, cavitation number at different inlet pressures); cavitation number (in range of 5.76-0.35 for plate number 1 and 1.20-0.35 for plate number 2); inlet pressure (2-8 bars) and reaction time (0 to 60 min) in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and chlorpyrifos degradation has been studied and compared. Optimum inlet pressure of 5 bars exists for degradation of pollutants for both the plates. It is found that geometry of orifice plate plays important role in removal efficiencies of pollutant. Results obtained confirmed that orifice plate 1 with configuration of 1.5 mm 17 holes; cavitational number of 1.54 performed better with around 60% COD and 98% chlorpyrifos removal as compared to orifice plate 2 having configuration of 2 mm single hole; cavitational number of 0.53 with 40% COD and 96% chlorpyrifos in 2 h duration time.
