Oxygen diffuses through the cation-specific membrane, reducing the coulomb yield of the fuel cell. In the present study, attempts were made to enhance current generation from the fuel cell by lowering the oxygen diffusion, including the uses of ferricyanide as a cathode mediator and of a platinum-coated graphite electrode. Ferricyanide did not act as a mediator as expected, but as an oxidant in the cathode compartment of the microbial fuel cell. The microbial fuel cell with platinum-coated graphite cathode generated a maximum current 3-4 times higher than the control fuel cell with graphite cathode, and the critical oxygen concentration of the former was 2.0 mg $1^{-1}$, whilst that of the latter was 6.6 mg $1^{-1}$. Based on these results, it was concluded that inexpensive electrodes are adequate for the construction of an economically feasible microbial fuel cell with better performance as a novel wastewater treatment process.
The carboxylates as a corrosion inhibitor has been studied by many researchers because of its environmental safety and low depletion rate. However, conventional test methods of inhibitor such as weight loss measurements, linear polarization resistance and corrosion potential monitoring etc., evaluate uniform corrosion of metals. These methods are unable to evaluate crevice-related corrosions, which are encountered in most of heat exchanging facilities. In order to choose the optimum corrosion inhibitor, the appropriate test methods are required to evaluate their performances in service environment. From this point of view, polarization technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of sodium heptanoate on corrosion behavior for carbon steel. Especially a thin film crevice sensor technique were applied to simulate the crevice corrosion in this study. From these experiments, we found that oxygen as an oxidizing agent was required to obtain stable passive film on the metal. Presence of oxygen, however, accelerated crevice corrosion. Potential shift by oxygen depletion and weakened inhibitive film inside the crevice were responsible for such accelerated feature. It is shown that film for corrosion inhibition is a mixture of sodium heptanoate and iron (II) heptanoate as reaction product of iron surface and sodium heptanoate. The iron (II) heptanoate which has been synthesized by reaction of heptanoic acid and ferrous chloride in methanol solution forms bidentate complex.

Recent development of photocatalytic degradation method that is mediated by TiO$_2$ is of interest in the treatment of volatile organic compounds(VOCs). In this study, trichloroethylene(TCE) and acetone were closely examined in a batch scale of photo-reactor as a function of water vapor, oxygen, and temperature. Water vapor inhibited the photocatalytic degradation of acetone, while there was an optimum concentration in TCE. A lower efficiency was found in nitrogen atmosphere than air, and the effect of oxygen on photocatalytic degradation of acetone was greater than on that of TCE. The optimum reaction temperature on photocatalytic degradation was about 45$^{\circ}C$ for both compounds. NO organic byproducts were detected for both compounds under the present experimental conditions. It was ascertained that the photocatalytic reaction in a batch scale of photo-reactor was very effective in removing VOCs such as TCE and acetone in the gaseous phase.
5 m/o Yb-doped SrCeO3 proton conductor was prepared by a solid state reaction method and its total electriccal conductivity measured as a function of both oxygen partial pressure and water vapor partial pressure in the temperature range of 500~100$0^{\circ}C$. From the total conductivity have been deconvoluted the partial conductivities of oxide ions, protons, and holes, respectively, on the basis of the defect model proposed. The equilibrium constant of hydrogen-dissolution reaction, proton concentration, and mobilities of oxygen vacancies and protons have subsequently been evaluated. It is verified that SrCe1-xYbxO3 is a mixed conductor of holes, protons and oxide ions and the proton conduction prevails as temperature decreases and water vapor pressure increases. The heat of water dissolution takes a representative value of $\Delta$HoH=-(140$\pm$20) kJ/mol-H2O, but tends to be less negative with increasing temperature. Migration enthalpies of proton and oxygen vacancy are extracted as 0.83$\pm$0.10 eV and 0.81$\pm$0.01 eV, respectively.

Methanol was directly produced by the partial oxidation of methane with four-component mixed oxide catalysts. Four-component(Mo-Bi-Cr-Si) mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods. The catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method showed about eleven times higher surface area than that prepared by the co-precipitation method. From the $O_2$-TPD experiment of the prepared catalysts, it was proven that there exists two types of oxygen species, and the oxygen species that participates in the partial oxidation reaction is the lattice oxygen desorbing around $750^{\circ}C$. The optimum reaction condition for methanol production was $420^{\circ}C$, 50 bar, flow rate of 115 mL/min, and $CH_4/O_2$ ratio of 10/1.5, providing methane conversion and methanol selectivity of 3.2 and 26.7%, respectively.
Using solid inorganic peroxides (including Li2O2, Na2O2, SrO2 and BaO2) as starting materials, three reaction paths for singlet oxygen (1O2) production were developed and studied. Their 1O2 emission spectra in the near- IR region and visible region from these reaction paths were simultaneously recorded by a near-IR sensitive Optical Multichannel Analyzer and a visible sensitive Optical Spectrum Analyzer, respectively. The comparison of their 1O2 emission spectra indicated that: (1) in term of the efficiency for 1O2 production, the gasliquid- solid reaction path (in which Cl2 or HCl and H2O reacted with the solid inorganic peroxides suspension in CCl4) was prior to the gas-solid reaction path (in which Cl2 or HCl reacted with the solid inorganic peroxides suspension in CCl4), but was inferior to the gas-liquid reaction path (in which Cl2 or HCl reacted with the solid inorganic peroxides solution in H2O or D2O); (2) the alkali metal peroxides (such as Li2O2 and Na2O2) was prior to the alkaline earth metal peroxides (such as SrO2 and BaO2) as the solid reactants, and Cl2 was favorable than HCl as the gas reactant in efficiency for 1O2 production in these reaction paths.
Recently, there has been a growing interest in clean hydrogen energy that does not emit carbon dioxide during combustion due to the increasing focus on carbon neutral. Research related to hydrogen production continues, and in this study, we applied waste-derived synthesis gas to the water-gas shift reaction to simultaneously treat waste and produce high-purity hydrogen. To enhance catalytic activity in the high-temperature water-gas shift (HT-WGS) reaction, magnesium was used as a support material alongside cerium. Cu-CeO2-MgO catalysts were synthesized, with copper acting as the active component for the HT-WGS reaction. A study on the catalytic activity based on the preparation method was conducted, and the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared by impregnation method exhibited the highest activity in the HT-WGS reaction. The observed superior performance of the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared through the impregnation method can be attributed to its significantly higher oxygen storage capacity and amount of active Cu species.
Ni catalyst (Ni: 15 wt%) supported on precalcined SiO2 has been investigated in reforming reactions of methane to synthesis gas. The catalyst exhibited fairly good activity and stability in partial oxidation of methane (POM), whereas it deactivated in steam reforming of methane (SRM). Pulse reaction results of CH4, O2, and CH4/O2 revealed that Ni/SiO2 has high capability to dissociate methane. The results also revealed that both CH4 and O2 are activated on the surface of metallic Ni, and then surface carbon species react with adsorbed oxygen to produce CO and CO2 depending on the bond strength of the oxygen species on the catalyst surface.
Hydrogen is considered a potential future energy source. Among other applications of hydrogen, hydrogen-rich water is emerging as a new health care product in industrial areas. Water electrolysis is typically used to generate a hydrogen rich water system. We annealed 10AA carbon paper in air to use it as an electrode of a hydrogen rich water generator. Driven by annealing, structural changes of the carbon paper were identified by secondary electron microscope analysis. Depending on the various annealing temperatures, changes of the hydrophilic characteristics were demonstrated. The crystal structures of pristine and heat-treated carbon paper were characterized by X-ray diffraction. Improvement of the efficiency of the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction was measured via linear voltammetry. The optimized annealing temperature of 10AA carbon paper showed the possibility of using this material as an effective hydrogen rich water generator.
