  • NiO and Co3O4-doped porous La(CoNi)O3 perovskite oxides were prepared from excess Ni addition by a hydrothermal method using porous silica template, and characterized as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for Zn-air rechargeable batteries in alkaline solution. Excess Ni induced to form NiO and Co3O4 in La(CoNi)O3 particles. The NiO and Co3O4-doped porous La(CoNi)O3 showed high specific surface area, up to nine times of conventionally synthesized perovskite oxide, and abundant pore volume with similar structure. Extra added Ni was partially substituted for Co as B site of ABO3 perovskite structure and formed to NiO and Co3O4 which was highly dispersed in particles. Excess Ni in La(CoNi)O3 catalysts increased OER performance (259 mA/㎠ at 2.4 V) in alkaline solution, although the activities (211 mA/㎠ at 0.5 V) for ORR were not changed with the content of excess Ni. La(CoNi)O3 with excess Ni showed very stable cyclability and low capacity fading rate (0.38 & 0.07 ㎶/hour for ORR & OER) until 300 hours (~70 cycles) but more excess content of Ni in La(CoNi)O3 gave negative effect to cyclability.

  • Direct photoisomerizations of benzalpyrrolinones yield the corresponding E-isomers via a singlet state, since no effect of oxygen on the reaction rates was observed. The Z-oxodipyrromethene was photoisomerized to the E-isomer in a degassed system. In an aerobic system the oxodipyrromethene 3 was photoisomerized at the early stage of the reaction and photooxygenated slowly at latter stage of the reaction. For bilirubin, other (possibly Z ${\to}$ E) than self-sensitizing $^1O_2$ reaction should have occurred because of the lack of a solvent effect on the self-sensitized photooxidation reaction rate at the early stage.

  • Molecular $N_2O$ has bee known to react over oxygen vacancy on a reduced rutile $TiO_2$(110)-1${\times}$1 surface to desorb as molecular $N_2$ leaving oxygen atom behind. In the present study, we investigated the reaction of $N_2O$ on rutile $TiO_2$(110) using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). Our results indicate that $N_2O$ does not react over the oxygen vacancy under a typical UHV experimental condition. On a rutile $TiO_2$(110)-1${\times}$1 with a well-defined oxygen vacancy concentration of 5% ($2.6{\times}10^{13}/cm^2$), $N_2O$ desorption features show a monolayer peak maximum at 135 K followed by a small peak maximum at 170 K. When the oxygen vacancy is blocked with $H_2O$, the $N_2O$ peak at 170 K disappears completely, indicating that the peak is due to molecular $N_2O$ interacting with oxygen vacancy. The integrated amount of desorbed $N_2O$ plotted against the amount of adsorbed $N_2O$ however shows a straight line with no offset indicating no loss of $N_2O$ during our cycles of TPD measurements. In addition, our $N_2O$ uptake measurements at 70~100 K showed no $N_2$ (as a reaction product) desorption except contaminant $N_2$. Also, $H_2O$ TPD taken after $N_2O$ scattering up to 350 K indicates no change in the vacancy-related $H_2O$ desorption peak at 500 K showing no change in the oxygen vacancy concentration after the interaction with $N_2O$.

  • The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell requires the use of Pt-based catalysts. Due to the high cost and low abundance of Pt, many researchers have been studied to reduce the use of Pt while to enhance the catalytic performance of Pt. One of the promising strategies is the deposition of Pt as ultrathin skins of only a few atomic layers on nanoscale substrates made of another metal. This presentation will discuss the conformal deposition of Pt as uniform, ultrathin shells on Pd nanocrystals. By optimizing the catalytic behavior of Pt-based nanocrystals, we obtained the greatly enhanced ORR activity and durability.

  • Fe-tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin on carbon black (Fe-TMPP/C) is examined and compared with carbon (C) and Pt-coated carbon (Pt/C) for oxygen reduction reaction in a two chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC). The Fe-TMPP/C is prepared by heat treatment and characterized using SEM, TEM, and XPS. The electrochemical properties of catalysts are characterized by voltammerty and single cell measurements. It is found that the power generation in the MFC with Fe-TMPP/C as the cathode is higher than that with Pt/C. The maximum power of the Fe-TMPP/C is 0.12 mW compared with 0.10 mW (Pt/C) and 0.02 mW (C). This high output with the Fe-TMPP/C indicates that MFCs are promising in further practical applications with low cost macrocycles catalysts.

  • Advanced structure of metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells was devised to overcome sealing problem and mechanical instability in ceramic-supported solid oxide fuel cells. STS430 whose dimensions were 26mm diameter, 1mm thickness and 0.4mm channel width was used as metal support. Thin ceramic layer composed of anode(Ni/YSZ) and electrolyte(YSZ) was joined with STS430 metal support by using a cermet adhesive. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_{3}$ perovskite oxide was used as cathode material. It was noted that oxygen reduction reaction of cathode governed the overall cell performance from oxygen partial pressure dependance.

  • Hydrox gas which is the mixed gas of hydrogen and oxygen gained fromwater electrolysis is one of the new clean energy sources and thus is researched and commercialized actively. Especially, it can be replaced the fossil energy and shows the better quality compared to the conventional energy such as LPG or acetylene gas. The mixed gas of hydrogen and oxygen is gained from water electrolysis reaction. It has constant volume ratio 2:1 of hydrogen and oxygen, and it is used as a source of thermal energy by combustion reaction. Further, hydrox gas is nearly a mixed ideal gas combusting itself completely and its combustion shows anunique characteristics of implosion. In this study, temperature rise effects on hydrox gas content through mixed combustion test of kerosene and hydrox gas and LPG and hydrox gas are investigated. it is also confirmed that economy of mixed combustion of hydrox gas as effective energy is fairly probable.

  • Waste combustion above a grate is the core process of incineration systems, stability of which should be guaranteed for emission minimization. However, complicated reactions and heat and mass transfer phenomena make understanding the process difficult. One dimensional bed combustor with a numerical combustion model is utilized to investigate the combustion process of the bed, using cubic wood particles as a simulated fuel. Bed combustion behavior is characterized with apparent flame propagation speed, which has close relationship with air supply rate and chemical and physical characteristics of the fuel. Base on the availability of oxygen, two distinct reaction zone is identified; the oxygen-limited and the reaction-limited zone leading to the extinction by excessive convection cooling. The numerical modeling shows good agreement with the experimental results. The transient bed combustion behavior of local temperature and oxygen consumption rate is adequately reproduced. The numerical model is extended to model the waste bed combustion of a commercial incineration plant, which shows meaningful results as well.

  • It was investigated into the effects on zinc corrosion of the rotation speed of Zn-RDE and the oxygen concentration in borate buffer solution. Zinc corrosion was heavily influenced on the rotation speed of electrode and the oxygen concentration. We have suggested the disproportion reaction following the reversible one electron transfer as the corrosion mechanism of zinc.
