  • In this study, a system to measure continuously the fuel concentration in a steady flow rig on the basis of Rayleigh scattering is presented. The system can be employed to measure both the temporal and the spatial distribution. Also, it is possible to calibrate the system for the measurement of accurate absolute concentration. Firstly, the system was tested at a calibration chamber for the determination of scattering cross section from propane, butane, acetylene, Freon-12 and Genetron 143a. After this, the system was adapted to a steady flow rig to measure the temporal and spatial fuel concentration. The rig is composed of cylinder head, intake manifold, injector, and transparent cylinder which can simulate internal combustion engine. To cope with the interference of Mie scattering, which is main obstacle of the measuring concentration with Rayleigh scattering, a hardware filter was installed for reducing the number density of particles. Furthermore a software filter was developed, which is based on the rise time and the time constant of the photomultiplier-amplifier system. In addition, background noisy was reduced by adjusting the optical array and applying the pin hall and beam trap. The results show that LRS can provide useful information about concentration field and the software filter is very effective method to remove Mie interference.

  • The generalized Rayleigh-Gans (GRG) approximation is usually used to compute the scattering amplitudes of leaves smaller or comparable to a wavelength, while the physical optics (PO) approach with the resistive sheet approximation is commonly used for leaves larger or comparable to the wavelength. In this paper, the scattering amplitudes of an elliptical leaf are computed using those theoretical scattering models (GRG and PO) at different frequencies. The accuracies of the analytical models for microwave scattering from deciduous leaves are investigated by comparison with the precise estimation by the method of moment (MoM). It was found that both the PO approach and the GRG approximation can be used alternatively for computing the scattering matrices of natural deciduous leaves at P-, L-, C- and X-band frequencies.

  • Rayleigh Scattering Cross Sections($\sigma$i) of various gases and the temperature distributions of premixes C3H8/O2 flame are measured by high power KrF(248nm) Exci- mer laser and ICCD camera. Results show that $\sigma$i of O2 and Propane(C3H8) gases agree well in the 5% error range, but of H2 has the more or less difference from the calcul- ated value by other groups. This is attributed to the low RS signal of H2 to Nosie level(S/N ratio). The temperature distributions of flame range out between 300K in the air and about 2000K in the burned area. In this temperature range, out system has the about 250K temperature resolution. Because low RS signals in the reaction area with high temperature are affected highly by noises, temperature uncertainty of this area is relatively high to another part of flame. Experimental results show that UV Rayleigh Scattering can be used for the measurement of mixing ratio of mixed gases and the temperature distributions of flame. Especially, this technique can be applied for the measurement of the mixing ratio of air/fuel before the ignition and the flame structure after the ignition inside the Engine.

  • The differential diffusion of two species in jet is considered. The direct photo images of $H_{2}/SF_{6}$ flame are taken and the non-react jets of $H_{2}/SF_{6}$ mixture are visualized with Rayleigh scattering method. The structures of Dual flame are found in the photography. As the volume fraction of $H_2$ in mixture is increased, the flame at side is long and as the volume fraction of $SF_{6}$ in mixture is increased, the flame at center is long. This phenomena are deduced from the non-react mixture using Rayleigh scattering method. Result show that the volume fraction in the mixture is important in differential diffusion.

  • The interaction between azo dyes and cationic surfactant was studied by absorption spectroscopy and fluorescent Rayleigh scattering. In order to presume the structure of formed micelle, methyl orange and ethyl orange as azo dyes and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as cationic surfactant were used. Infomations about interaction parameter including absorption maxima, optimal conditions, and intensity of fluorescent Rayleigh scattering were obtained. When azo dyes and CTAB are formed 1 : 1 complex, it showed the strongest intensity of fluorescent Rayleigh scattering. On going from mixed micelle to homomicell, It suggests successively several intermediate steps of complex structure which can be distinguished clearly from one another.

  • The unification model of active galactic nuclei invokes the presence of a thick molecular torus that hides the broad emission line region from a line of sight toward observers with low latitude. It is expected that the illuminated side of the molecular torus may be photodissociated by strong far UV radiation from the central AGN, forming an H I region with a high neutral column density. We propose that the Rayleigh scattering optical depth of this HI region can be significant for most broad $Ly{\alpha}$ line photons with the Doppler factor not exceeding 104 km s-1. Rayleigh scattered $Ly{\alpha}$ photons can be characterized by strong linear polarization depending on their scattering optical depth. We performed Monte Carlo simulations of polarized radiative transfer of $Ly{\alpha}$ adopting simple scattering geometries relevant to the unification model of AGN. We find that for a low torus the Rayleigh scattered $Ly{\alpha}$ is polarized in the direction parallel to the symmetry axis with the polarization degree dependent on wavelength. In the case of a high torus, the core part of $Ly{\alpha}$ is polarized in the direction perpendicular to the symmetry axis whereas the wing part is parallelly polarized. We conclude that careful spectropolarimetry around $Ly{\alpha}$ can be useful in testing the AGN unification model.

  • The tribrachial flame in laminar coflow jet has been investigated experimentally with unsteady propagating condition. With adopting various visualization techniques, including OH-PLIF, Rayleigh Scattering technique, it was confirmed that the location of tribrachial point is on the inclined surface of flame and the propagation speed of tribrachial flame was significantly affected by the velocity gradient.

  • In this study, we theoretically study the acoustic scattering of an obliquely incident plane wave from a finite elastic cylindrical shell. A heuristic scattering method of Ye [Z. Ye, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 877-884 (1997)] for a finite fluid cylinder is extended into a finite elastic cylindrical shell since no analytic solutions exist in the finite cylinder. The elastic cylindrical shell is modeled with the 3D elastic wave theory considering internal fluid. Using the derived analytic solution, we observe the effect of the internal fluid on the scattering field, the scattering field for the Rayleigh parameter, and the far-field scattering function for the elastic property of the cylindrical shell.
