Material degradation due to corrosion fatigue was evaluated nondestructively using backward radiated Rayleigh surface wave. h corrosion fatigue test was carried out for the specimens made of thermo-mechanically controlled process steel in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution at $25^{\circ}C$. The backward radiation profile, which is the amplitude variation of backward radiated ultrasound according to the incident angle, of the specimens were measured in water at room temperature after the corrosion fatigue test. The velocity of Rayleigh surface wave, determined from the incident angle at which the profile of the backward radiated ultrasound became maximum, decreased for the specimen that had the large number of cycles to failure in the corrosion fatigue test. This fact implies that the corrosion degradation occurred at specimen surface in this specific test is dominantly dependant on the me exposed to corrosion environment. The result observed in the present work demonstrates the high potential of backward radiated Rayleigh surface wave as a tool for nondestructive evaluation of corrosion degradation of aged materials.
Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. Those waves are used to determine the ground stiffness profile using their dispersion characteristics. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than that of others. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis that uses the dispersion information of both Love and Rayleigh wave was proposed. Numerical analysis, theoretical model test, and field test were performed to verify the joint inversion analysis. Results from 2D, 3D finite element analysis were compared with those from the transfer matrix method in the numerical analysis. On the other hand, the difference of results from each inversion analysis was investigated in the theoretical model analysis. Finally, practical applicability of the joint inversion analysis was verified by performing field test. As a result, it is confirmed that considering dispersion information of each wave simultaneously prevents excessive divergence and improves accuracy.

Based on the Green's function technique, an analytical approach is developed to examine the surface wave screening effectiveness of composite wave barriers. The composite barrier consists of a high velocity layer sandwiched between two thin layers of low shear velocity materials. The high velocity layer is represented by differential matrix operators which relate the wave fields on each side of the layer. The low velocity layers are modeled by non-rigid contact conditions which allow partial sliding at the interfaces. Screening ratio of barriers with various combination of material, geometric, and non-rigidness parameters are compared and discussed in some detail.

A new analytical inversion technique is developed to determine the shear wave velocity profiles of natural soils and pavement systems from the dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves. Haskell's theory on the dispersion of the surface waves in multi-layered elastic solids is utilized. A frequency-unlimited dispersion equation is developed by use of the delta matrix technique. Rigid halfspace is assumed at the depth of the one wavelength of Rayleigh waves. Computer program is coded and validity of the technique is verified through the numerical model tests.
Two-dimensional S-wave velocity sections from SH-wave refraction tomography and surface wave dispersions were obtained by inverting traveltimes of first arrivals and surface wave dispersions, respectively. For the purpose of comparison, a P-wave velocity tomogram was also obtained from a P-wave refraction profiling. P and Rayleigh waves generated by vertical blows on a plate with a sledgehammer were received by 100- and 4.5-Hz geophones, respectively. SH-waves generated by horizontal blows on both sides of a 50 kg timber were received by 8 Hz horizontal geophones. The shear-wave signals were enhanced subtracting data of left-side blows from ones of the right-side blows. Shear-wave velocities from tomography inversion of first-arrival times were compared with ones from inverting dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves. Although the two velocity sections look similar to each other in general, the one from the surface waves tends to have lower velocities. First arrival picking of SH waves is troublesome since P and PS-converted waves arrive earlier than SH waves. Application of the surface wave method, on the other hand, is limited where lateral variation of subsurface tructures
is not mild.
The Rayleigh wave propagation is considered in the structure of the functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) layer over the elastic substrate. The elastic substrate loosely bonds the layer through a corrugated interface, whereas its upper boundary is also corrugated but stress-free. Additionally, the solutions for the FGPM layer and substrate are derived using the fundamental variable separable approach to convert the partial differential equation to an ordinary differential equation. The results with boundary conditions lead to dispersion relations for the electrically open and electrically short cases in the determinant form. The outcomes have been numerically analyzed using a specific model. The findings were presented in the form of graphs, which were created using Mathematica 7. Graphs are plotted for variations in wavenumber and phase velocity. The outcomes may help measure interface defects and design Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices.

The corrosion-fatigue characteristics of the 12Cr steel, which is widely used in fossil power plants as a turbine blade material, are evaluated nondestructively by use of the Rayleigh surface wave. In this study, the frequency dependency of the Rayleigh surface wave is investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in the aged specimens, and then compared to the corrosion-fatigue characteristics. The width of the backward radiation profile decreases as the increase of the aging temperature, which seems to result from the increase of the effective degrading layer thickness. This parameter also shows an inversely proportionality to the exponent, m, in the Paris law which predicts the crack size increasement due to fatigue. The result observed in this study demonstrates high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for the nondestructive evaluation of the corrosion-fatigue characteristics of the aged materials.

The angular dependence (or profile) of backscattered ultrasound was measured for steel specimens with a range of surface roughness, $1{\sim}71{\mu}m$. Backscattering profiles at or near the Rayleigh angle still showed roughness dependence while the assessment of surface roughness via normal profile became impossible due to the paint layer masking the roughness. The peak amplitude directly radiated at the Rayleigh angle was proportional to the surface roughness, while the averaged peak amplitude radiated from the backward propagating Rayleigh wave, produced by reflection at a corner, was inversely proportional. In the painted specimens, the linearity of direct backward radiation with the roughness was observed even at the roughness of less than three hundredths of a wavelength, and the abnormal multiple bark reflection caused by periodic roughness disappeared.
This analysis consists of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix for evaluating the ground system and DLSS (Damped Least Square Solution) as an inversion technique. The technique of joint inversion uses the dispersion characteristics of Love wave and Rayleigh wave simultaneously making the sensitivity matrix. The sensitivity matrix was used for inversion analysis repeatedly to find the approximate ground stiffness profile. The purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results by utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different.

In this paper, ultrasonic tomography by the Mode-Converted Rayleigh wave (MCRW) in the back-scattered direction is presented. When a beam with a short pulse and narrow beam width enters a reflector with smooth surface, in general, two major arrivals can be observed in the output waveform: the specular reflection and the radiation of the MCRW from the reflector surface. The time-delay between the two waves is relatively large and thus can be measured easily. This large time-delay is due to the fact that the MCRW is slower than incident wave. In our method, this large time- delay is used for ultrasonic image reconstruction. To effectively detect the MCRW, the arrayed-receiving transducers are circularly arranged around the transmitter. In addition, a deconvolution method is employed to remove specular echo signals for reconstructing the MCRW image.
