  • This paper aims to maximize the energy harvesting rate and channel capacity in RF-energy harvesting networks (RF-EHNs) under the constraints of maximum transmit power and minimum quality of service (QoS) in terms of rate capacity for each user. We study a multi-user RF-EHN with frequency division multiple access (FDMA) in a Rayleigh channel. An access point (AP) simultaneously transmitting wireless information and power in the RF-EHN serves a subset of active users which have a power-splitting antenna. To gauge the network performance, we define energy efficiency (EE) and propose an optimization solution for maximizing EE with Lagrangian dual decomposition theory. In simulation results, we confirm that the EE is effectively maximized by the proposed solution with satisfying the given constraints.

  • As the number of mobile devices has been increasing tremendously, system capacity should be enlarged in future next generation communication, such as the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) mobile networks. For such future networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been considered as promising multiple access technology. In this paper, to reduce both latency and complexity in existing NOMA, we propose non-successive interference cancellation (SIC) NOMA with asymmetric binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM), nearly without bit-error rate (BER) loss. First, we derive the closed form of BER expressions for non-SIC NOMA with asymmetric 2PAM, especially under Rayleigh fading channels. Then, it is shown that the BER performance of the stronger channel user who is supposed to perform SIC in conventional NOMA can be nearly achieved by the proposed non-SIC NOMA with asymmetric 2PAM, especially without SIC. Furthermore, we also show that the BER performance of the weaker channel user in conventional NOMA can be more closely achieved by the proposed non-SIC NOMA with asymmetric 2PAM. These BERs are shown to be achieved over the part of the power allocation range, which is consistent with the NOMA principle of user fairness. As a result, the non-SIC NOMA scheme with asymmetric 2PAM could be considered as a promising NOMA scheme toward next generation communication.

  • This paper investigates the effect of hardware impairments (HIs) and imperfect channel state information (ICSI) on a SWIPT-assisted adaptive nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA)/orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system over independent and nonidentical Rayleigh fading channels. In the NOMA mode, the energy-constrained near users act as a relay to improve the performance for the far users. The OMA transmission mode is adopted to avoid a complete outage when NOMA is infeasible. The best user selection scheme is considered to maximize the energy harvested and avoid error propagation. To characterize the performance of the proposed systems, closed-form and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability for both near and far users are studied. Moreover, exact and approximate expressions of the ergodic rate for near and far users are investigated. Simulation results are provided to verify our theoretical analysis and confirm the superiority of the proposed NOMA/OMA scheme in comparison with the conventional NOMA and OMA protocol with/without HIs and ICSI.

  • In wireless ATM system, powerful FEC code is required for highly reliable data transmission. In this paper, we propose an adaptive hybrid ARQ scheme using RCPSCCC for WATM system. The code rate of RCPSCC is adjusted to match channel conditions and data types. By using only the effective free distances of outer and inner encoders, we derive upper bounds of the bit and word error probabilities over Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. By applying RCPSCC to the adaptive hybrid ARQ protocol, highly reliable data transmission can be achieved.

  • For mobile multimedia systems that equip transmit diversity for a forward channel, it is well known that the Tx diversity technique is appropriate for high rate mobile multimedia communications. In this paper, we propose a STTD (Space Time Transmit Diversity) receiver, which incorporates the design of the Tx diversity receiver without the mutual interference of antenna by using a CCI cancellation technique. The new STTD receiver is simulated and its performance is analyzed in a DS-CDMA/QPSK. Adopting the proposed STTD receiver at $10^{-2}$TEX>∼$10^{-4}$TEX> in bit error rate, SNR of 0.5 ㏈∼2 ㏈ performance improvement in AWGN and Rayleigh fading environments has been achieved.

  • This paper investigates the performance of M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) multiuser ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems in terms of symbol error rate (SER) over fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on Gaussian approximation for the multiple access interference, an expression for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived for the UWB system. This expression is used to derive exact SER expressions for coherent UWB receivers. The effect of pulse selection on the SER of multiuser UWB system is studied. In addition to rectangular pulse, the 2nd derivative Gaussian waveform and Rayleigh pulses were considered. We show that the system capacity and/or SER performance can be significantly increased by using the monocycle pulse in fading channels.

  • We propose a new serial concatenation scheme for space-time and recursive convolutional codes, in which a space-time code is used as the outer code and a single recursive convolutional code as the inner code. We discuss previously proposed serial concatenation schemes employing multiple inner codes and compare them with the new one. The proposed method and the previous one with joint decoding, both performing a combined decoding of the simultaneous output signals from multiple antennas, give a large performance gain over the separate decoding method. In decoding complexity, the new concatenation scheme has a lower complexity compared with the multiple encoding/joint decoding scheme due to the use of the single inner code. Simulation results for a communication system with two transmit and one receive antennas in a quasi-static Rayleigh fading channel show that the proposed scheme outperforms the previous schemes.

  • In this paper, the performance of a MC-CDMA system applying adaptive subchannel allocation scheme and M-ary orthogonal signaling is analyzed for forward links in Rayleigh fading channel. In the proposed system, each DS waveform is transmitted over the subchannel having the biggest fading among L subchannels. Assuming M-ary orthogonal signaling and 4 subchannels, the BER of 10$\^$-3/ is satisfied if SNRs are 7.33 ㏈, 5.33 ㏈, and 4.47 ㏈ for k=1, 2, and 3, respectively. Also, SNRs which met BER of 10$\^$-3/ are 1.42 ㏈ and 2.33 ㏈ in L=2 and L=8 as k=1 is increased to k=2. It is shown that the MC-CDMA system has performance improvement as a number of subcarriers and M-ary orthogonal signaling.

  • A simple measurement system is built to estimate the dual-antenna diversity gain at 2.4GHz easily in open lab environment. To obtain multipath fading propagation channel, the system consists of two transmission horn that placed on opposite direction and a rotating stage mechanically changing the position of test dual-antenna with time over distance greater than one wavelength. Estimated diversity is nearly same as theoretical value such that measured diversity gain of 30mm separated is about 6dB similar to theoretical value of 5.7dB and increases monotonically with the increasing separation distance as predicted by the theory. Proposed measurement system that is simple enough to fit in a small space can evaluate the performance of various dual-antennas with a reasonable accuracy with lower 5% difference between the ten sets of measured waveform distribution and theoretical Rayleigh cumulative distribution.

  • This paper investigates the impact of outdated channel state information (CSI) on the performance of the incremental amplify-and-forward (AF) opportunistic relaying (OR) over dual-hop Rayleigh fading channels. According to the definition of distribution function, we obtain the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the actual combined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) received at the destination. Based on this CDF, the closed-form expressions of the average spectral efficiency and outage probability are derived for the incremental AF OR under outdated CSI. Numerical results show that in the low region of the average SNR of the direct link, outdated CSI deteriorates the system performance, whereas in the high region, outdated CSI has almost no impact on the system performance.
