Heterodyne efficiency is an indicator to evaluate the performance of space coherent laser communication systems. It is affected by signal light and local oscillator (LO) light amplitude, phase and polarization state. In this paper, based on the common heterodyne efficiency, a heterodyne efficiency model that can reflect polarization aberration of optical system is proposed. The heterodyne efficiency is analyzed when the signal light and the LO light are linearly polarized or circularly polarized. For a coherent communication optical system, when the incident signal light is right-circularly polarized light and the incident LO light is 45° linear polarized light. Based on the three-dimensional ray tracing theory and the heterodyne efficiency proposed in this paper, the change of polarization states and the distribution of heterodyne efficiency of the signal light and LO light influenced by the optical system's polarization aberration are analyzed. Analysis shows that the heterodyne efficiency model proposed in this paper can be used to evaluate coherent communication systems and reflect the influence of optical system polarization aberration.

An understanding of the concentrated solar flux is critical for the analysis and design of solar-energy-utilization systems. The current work focuses on the development of an algorithm that uses the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method with excellent flexibility and expandability; this method considers both solar limb darkening and the surface slope error of reflectors, thereby analyzing the solar flux. A comparison of the modeling results with measurements at the solar furnace in Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) show good agreement within a measurement uncertainty of 10%. The model evaluates the concentration performance of the KIER solar furnace with a tracking accuracy of 2 mrad and a maximum attainable concentration ratio of 4400 sun. Flux variations according to measurement position and flux distributions depending on acceptance angles provide detailed information for the design of chemical reactors or secondary concentrators.

In this paper, an exponential model of Korea is proposed to minimize an altitude-error of high-altitude target due to atmosphere refraction at radar system. The relation between surface refractivity and refractivity gradient, which is extracted using the least square fit from the measured data at 7 weather stations, is applied to the exponential model. And in order to verify the proposed model, the altitude-errors for a standard atmosphere, a CRPL(Central Radio Propagation Lab.) exponential model, the proposed model are extracted and analyzed using a ray tracing. As a result, the proposed model can improve the altitude estimation performance of radar compared to conventional atmosphere refractive index models.

The purpose of present study is to evaluate both the radiative heat loss from a flame and the local formation and oxidation rate of soot. The present paper describes a comprehensive mathematical model to deal with combustion and radiative heat transfer simultaneously. The involved radiative heat transfer model was based on the "heat ray tracing method" originally proposed by Hayasaka et al.. Some predicted results were compared with the experiments.periments.
The 3D game graphic technology has become an important factor in the contents field with the game contents development. In particular, game character technology provides a realistic technique and visual pleasure, as well as an intermediate step in the immersion of the game in which the game might create an optical illusion that enables the player to enjoy heroic adventure in the game. The high expression level of characters in 3D games is a key factor in the development process, with details and carefulness of the character setting work [3]. In this paper, we propose a character representative technique applied to mobile games using mathematical model of radiosity energy, spectral radiance model, and ray tracing model method using 3D unity game engine with sensible AI algorithm for game implementation. As a practical application to the game contents, it was found that the projection of the surface in the rendering process and the game simulation might change according to the lighting condition of the game content environment, so that the high quality of game characters was simulated.

Prognostic characteristics of hypothetical tsunamis in the East Sea are discussed based on numerical model simulations of linear long wave theory and wave ray for 28 source zones of tsunamigenic earthquake selected by the seismic gap theory. As a result, the propagation patterns of tsunamis due to hypothetical earthquake are presented and analyses also lead to selection of the geographical zones with low risk of tsunamis.
In this paper, the characteristics of the ray tracing method (RTM) based on the cylindrical wave are discussed for the high frequency vibration analysis of two-dimensional structures. A ray tube describing the emanating cylindrical wave is used to derive the governing equation for incident reflected, and transmitted ray tubes which satisfies the condition at the coupled boundary. The suggested ray model is applied to panel array structures, and the predicted results for 2-panel, 3-panel, and 4-panel array structures are compared to those by Statistical energy analysis (SEA) and Wave intensity analysis(WIA). More enhanced prediction was obtained compared to the SEA, and similar prediction performance was observed to the WIA. Additionally, the RTM has a novel feature that it can estimate the spatially smoothed distribution of vibration energy and vibration intensity. It is expected that the present RTM can be used as one of the useful tools for the high frequency vibration analysis of two-dimensional coupled structures.

Recently, the interest in the thermal comfort is ever increasing as the time people stay in the automobile is gradually increasing. So far, however, the cooling performance of the HVAC(heating and ventilation air conditioning) system is evaluated by thermal environment criteria such as indoor air velocity and temperature, not by a thermal comfort index. Furthermore, the precise criteria has not been established yet when the thermal comfort for the automobile is evaluated using numerical analysis. In this study, the numerical analysis of automobile indoor thermal comfort according to various parameters such as HVAC operating mode, airflow, passenger boarding conditions is performed during the HVAC system's initial operating time(20 minutes). The solar ray tracing model and S2S radiation model are used and validated to simulate an external heat source. Based on this study, an evaluation model which can predict the thermal comfort index for the combination of the above parameters is presented.

The on-orbit test simulation for predicting the instrument directional responsivity was conducted by the Monte Carlo based integrated ray tracing (IRT) computation technique and analytic flux-to-signal conversion algorithms. For the on-orbit test simulation, the Sun model consists of the Lambertian scattering sphere and emitting spheroid rays, the Amon-Ra instrument is a two-channel including a broadband scanning radiometer (energy channel) and an imager with ${\pm}2^{\circ}$ FOV (visible channel). The solar radiation produced by the Sun model is directed to the instrument viewing port and traced through the dual channel optical train. The instrument model is rotated on its rotation axis and this gives a slow scan of the Sun model over the full field of view. The direction of the incident lights are fed with scanned images obtained from the visible channel instrument. The instrument responsivity was computed by the ratio of the incident radiation input to the instrument output. In the radiometric simulation, especially, measured BRDF of the 3D CPC was used for scattering effects on radiometry. With diamond turned 3D CPC inner surface, the anisotropic surface scattering model from the measured data was applied to ray tracing computation. The technical details of the on-orbit test simulation are presented together with field-of-view calibration plan.

GOCi (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) is one of the COMS payloads that KARI is currently developing and scheduled to be in operation from around 2008. Its primary objective is to monitor the Korean coastal water environmental condition. We report the current progress in development of the integrated optical model as one of the key analysis tools for the GOCI in-orbit performance verification. The model includes the Sun as the emitting light source. The curved Earth surface section of 2500 km x 2500 km includingthe Korean peninsular os defined as a Lambertian scattering surface consisted of land and sea surface. From its geostationary orbit, the GOCI optical system observes the reflected light from the surfaces with varying reflectance representing the changes in its environmental conditions. The optical ray tracing technique was used to demonstrate the GOCI in-orbit performances such as red tide detection. The computational concept, simulation results and its implications to the on-going development of GOCI are presented.
