  • Various methods for determining the damping ratio have been proposed by scholars both domestically and abroad. However, no comparative analysis of different determination methods has been seen yet. In this study, typical sand (Fujian standard sand) and cohesive soils were selected as experimental objects, and undrained strain-controlled dynamic triaxial tests were conducted. The differences between existing damping ratio determination methods were theoretically compared and analyzed. The results showed that the hysteresis curve of cohesive soils had better symmetry and more closely conformed to the definition of equivalent linear viscoelasticity. For non-cohesive soils, the differences in damping ratio determined by six methods were significant. The differences decreased with increasing confining pressure and relative density, but increased gradually with increasing shear strain, especially at high shear strains, where the maximum relative error reached 200%. For cohesive soils, the differences in damping ratio determined by six methods were relatively small, with a maximum relative error of about 50%. Moreover, they were less affected by effective confining pressure and had the same changing trend under different effective confining pressures. The damping ratio determination method has a large effect on the seismic response of soils distributed by non-cohesive soils, with a maximum relative error of about 15% for the PGA and up to about 30% for the Sa. However, for soil layers distributed by cohesive soils, the damping ratio determination method has less influence on the seismic response. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a unified damping ratio determination method for non-cohesive soils, which can effectively avoid artificial errors caused by different determination methods.

  • Torsional irregularity is one of the most probable types of horizontal irregularity and existence of this irregularity in most of the structural loading codes is determined by calculating the ratio of the maximum to the average story drift. No specific method has been previously recommended by the codes to calculate the mentioned ratio in the response spectrum analyses. In the current investigation, nine steel building structures with different plan layouts and number of stories have been analyzed and designed in order to evaluate the efficiency of three methods for calculating the ratio of the maximum to the average story drift in the response spectrum analyses. It should be noted that one of these methods is the approach used by current version of ETABS software andother ones are proposed in this paper. The obtained results using the proposed methods are compared with the time history analysis results. The comparisons show that one of these methods underestimates the mentioned ratio in all studied models, however, the other two methods have shown similar results. It is also found that the plan layouts and irregularities can affect how these methods estimate the ratios compared to those obtained by the time history analysis. Generally, it can be concluded that all of these methods can properly predict the ratio with acceptable errors.

  • The existing methods to split overall gear ratio of the cylindrical multi-stage gear train have their own limitations to be used in practical design and are also problematic to be implemented in a formalized algerian. This paper proposes two types of new methods to find gear ratios best approximating the overall gear ratio. The proposed methods are quite general to be applied to the gear train having any number of stages, and offer a considerably good result in a very short time. The first method uses the random search method and the second one is based on the simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed algorithms are expected to be very useful not only as an independent program to split overall gear ratio, but also as a desist sub-module for the integrated desist system of multi-stage gear drives.

  • This paper examines whether debt ratio effects earnings management. There are various methods that estimate earnings management. This paper examines whether these methods impact on the relationship between earnings management and debt ratio. In addition, this study examines whether these relationship effects of debt type. Previous studies in this area haven't examined the relationship between debt ratio and earnings management in Korea. These studies didn't consider earnings management's method to analysis for this relationship. This paper tests the relationship between earnings management and debt ratio with methods of earnings management unlike from previous studies. Results are summaried as following. First, the relationship between debt ratio and earnings management was different for these methods. Abnormal Accruals that used estimation of eanrnings management in previous studies didn't examine these results that debt ratio effects of earnings management. However, it was significant positive the relationship between real activity management and debt ratio.

  • In this study, to propose the methods predicting water qualities in rural areas, the methods which were based on the runoff ratio, the relationships between the pollutant load(L) and the water runoff(Q), and the relationships between the runoff ratio and the water runoff in Bokha stream watersheds were examined. As a result, we had acquired reliable the values of runoff ratio and the reasonable equations between the pollutant load(L) and the water runoff(Q) in Bokha stream watersheds. And it was noticed that the runoff ratio had tendency of varying directly proportional to the water runoff.

  • In this paper, the effect of finishing methods on the relationships between compressive strength, permeability and void ratio of porous concrete (POC) or pervious concrete is discussed, using core specimens taken from actually constructed POC pavement. To attain reliable performance in the construction work, a newly designed finisher for POC is developed, and the performances as well as methods for controlling void ratio are examined. The POC pavements were finished with three finishing methods viz., no finishing, finishing with standard compactor and finishing with prototype compactor. The results show that the prototype POC finisher is efficient in controlling the void ratio and the quality of POC pavements. The relationships between compressive strength as well as permeability and void ratio of the in-situ POC pavements finished by the prototype machine were obtained. They are slightly different from the laboratory test results owing mainly to the mold effect and the differences in compaction modes.

  • We propose methods for detecting influential observations that have a large influence on the likelihood ratio test statistic for the multivariate Behrens-Fisher problem. For this purpose we derive the influence curve and the derivative influence of the likelihood ratio test statistic. An illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods on the identification of influential observations.

  • The likelihood ratio, logistic regression and artificial neural networks methods are applied and verified for analysis of landslide susceptibility in Yongin, Korea using GIS. From a spatial database containing such data as landslide location, topography, soil, forest, geology and land use, the 14 landsliderelated factors were calculated or extracted. Using these factors, landslide susceptibility indexes were calculated by likelihood ratio, logistic regression and artificial neural network methods. Before the calculation, the study area was divided into two sides (west and east) of equal area, for verification of the methods. Thus, the west side was used to assess the landslide susceptibility, and the east side was used to verify the derived susceptibility. The results of the landslide susceptibility analysis were verified using success and prediction rates. The v erification results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the exis ting data on landslide locations.

  • The SAP(salt-and-pepper) noise changes the pixel value to the maximum and minimum values of the dynamic region of the pixel. For this reason, unlike white Gaussian noise, SAP noise can predict the ratio of noise relatively easily. Because the condition of the neighboring pixels that can be referenced changes according to the noise ratio, it is necessary to apply different noise reduction methods according to the noise ratio. This paper proposes an adaptive switching filtering algorithm which can eliminates the SAP noise. It consists of two phases. It first detects the location of the SAP noise and calculates the noise ratio. After that, the image is reconstructed using different methods depending on which of the three sections the calculated noise ratio belongs to. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method showed superior objective and subjective image quality compared to the previous methods such as MF, AFSWMF, NAMF and RWMF.

  • The Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) by potassium permanganate and potassium dichromate is used as a measure of the organic matter content of a sample. Newly proposed $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ analysis method to be list at Korean Official Method was made from analysis and comparison of the experimental process on Japanese Industrial Standard(JIS), American Open Reflux and Closed Reflux Methods. New $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ method had better the qualitative and reproducible COD results than another methods as a result of the tested four times repeatedly by using Lakes water Plant wastewater. The COD data ratio by $KMnO_{4}$ and $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ methods was 2-3, 3, 2-17 and 3-4 times respectively when its data had compared with the lakes water and treated water of domestic and experimental wastewater, and raw wastewater which is generated at the manufacturing process of 6 steps and treated wastewater of chemistry source. Its ratio indicated to 2-4 and 2-3 times respectively on raw wastewater and plant wastewater of Chemistry, rubber and plastic, fiber, metal molding source. Oxidation ratio of benzene and ethyl benzene by $KMnO_{4}$ method was nearly zero, but the oxidation ratio by $K$_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ method was 50%, 70% respectively. Also, Oxidation ratio of phenol by $KMnO_{4}$ and $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ methods was 80%, 100% respectively, and trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene were not nearly oxidizd by $KMnO_{4}$ and $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ methods. As the above contents, oxidation ratio and COD results by $KMnO_{4}$ and $K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7}$ were different from various from various compounds and samples respectively.
