Objective : The International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms (ISUIA) reported that the 5-year cumulative rupture rate of small unruptured aneurysms less than 7 mm in diameter is very low depending on the aneurysm's location. However, we have seen a large number of ruptured aneurysms less than 7 mm in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to review our experience and to measure the size and location at which aneurysms ruptured in our patient population. Methods : We reviewed the characteristics of aneurysms, such as size and location, from the original angiograms of patients who were admitted to our hospital between January 2004 and December 2007. All aneurysms were treated surgically or through endovascular procedures. Results : Interventional or surgical treatment was given to a total of 889 patients, including 568 females and 321 males. At the time of our study, 627 cases were ruptured aneurysms and 262 cases were unruptured aneurysms. Of the ruptured cases, the mean diameter of the aneurysm was 6.28 mm. We found that 71.8% of ruptured aneurysms were smaller than 7 mm in diameter, and 87.9%, were smaller than 10 mm. Based on location, the data show that anterior communicating artery aneurysms most often presented with rupture sizes less than 7 mm (76.8%) and 10 mm (92.1%) in diameter. Most ruptured aneurysms were less than 7 mm in size, although recent studies have noted that small aneurysms are less likely to rupture. Conclusion : Although the natural history of unruptured intracranial aneurysms remains controversial, the aneurysm size and location play a signigicant role in determining the risk of rupture. Larger sample sizes and a long term study are needed to reveal the natural history and the rupture risk of unruptured intracranial aneurysms because the size of most ruptured aneurysms was less than 7 mm in diameter in our series.
Objective : Brainstem metastases are rarely operable and generally unresponsive to conventional radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Recently, Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) was used as feasible treatment option for brainstem metastasis. The present study evaluated our experience of brainstem metastasis which was treated with GKRS. Methods : Between November 1992 and June 2010, 32 patients (23 men and 9 women, mean age 56.1 years, range 39-73) were treated with GKRS for brainstem metastases. There were metastatic lesions in pons in 23, the midbrain in 6, and the medulla oblongata in 3 patients, respectively. The primary tumor site was lung in 21, breast in 3, kidney in 2 and other locations in 6 patients. The mean tumor volume was $1,517mm^3$ (range, 9-6,000), and the mean marginal dose was 15.9 Gy (range, 6-23). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was obtained every 2-3 months following GKRS. Follow-up MRI was possible in 24 patients at a mean follow-up duration of 12.0 months (range, 1-45). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to evaluate the prognostic factors. Results : Follow-up MRI showed tumor disappearance in 6, tumor shrinkage in 14, no change in tumor size in 1, and tumor growth in 3 patients, which translated into a local tumor control rate of 87.5% (21 of 24 tumors). The mean progression free survival was 12.2 months (range, 2-45) after GKRS. Nine patients were alive at the completion of the study, and the overall mean survival time after GKRS was 7.7 months (range, 1-22). One patient with metastatic melanoma experienced intratumoral hemorrhage during the follow-up period. Survival was found to be associated with score of more than 70 on Karnofsky performance status and low recursive partitioning analysis class (class 1 or 2), in terms of favorable prognostic factors. Conclusion : GKRS was found to be safe and effective for management of brainstem metastasis. The integral clinical status of patient seems to be important in determining the overall survival time.
Traffic volume data have been used for the plan, the design, and the operation of highway. Since 1955, traffic survey has been nation- widely carried out at national highway and the regular survey in national highway has been conducted at the intersections of highways. However, it is critical issue to select the priority of the regular survey because it is almost impossible to conduct regular survey at all intersections of national highways. In this study, MCDM(Multiple Criteria Decision Making) using AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was applied to decide the priority of the regular survey. The following standard variables for determining the priority was selected the highway plan variables[AADT, VKT, Peak Hourly Volume, Location of highway from Urban], the highway design variables[Volume(pcu), Directional Traffic Volume, Heavy Vehicle Rate], and the highway operation variables[Speed, Density, V/C]. The standard variables were quantified and normalized. Using the Eigen vector method, the weighted values of each hierarchy based on the pair-wise comparison values from the questionnaire survey were calculated. The selection of the priority of regular survey was dependent on the size of the product of the weighted values for each hierarchy and the normalized values for the standard variables. Finally, the priority of regular survey of the intersections of national highways was determined according to the order in the size of the product of two values.
Recently, the use of high strength concrete (HSC) has increased dramatically md however, few studies have been conducted on the early-age properties of HSC such as setting. The penetration resistance test (specified by KS F 2436) that is the standard test method for determining initial and final setting times of concrete, may not be appropriate for HSC because of the high viscosity of the mortar mixture. To address this issue, an ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) monitoring system was used to investigate the setting behavior of mortar and concrete. The experimental study was carried out to measure the UPV's of mortars and concretes having various water/binder ratios (W/B) and various fly ash replacement levels, during the first 24 hours of testing. Test results showed that the UPV in concrete was developed faster than that of mortar with the same W/B, and that of ordinary concrete was greater than that of fly ash concrete. Typical values of UPV were suggested that correspond to the initial and final setting times, based on following criteria: (1) the penetration resistance method; (2) the instant when the UPV begins to develop; and (3) the instant when the UPV development rate is maximum. The method and UPV monitoring device used in this study is promising for the setting assessment of concrete, particularly for HSC.

Three compounds of Cu(II)-loaded N,N,N'-trimethylethylenediaminated Merrifield-type polymers were synthesized with yields higher than 80%, and the hydrolysis reaction rates of O-isopropylmethyl-phosphonofluoridate(GB) and O-pinacolylmethylphosphonofluoridate (GD) catalyzed by them have been surveyed. GB and GD hydrolysis by Cu(II)-loaded polymers occurs via intermediate complex mechanism where rapid equilibrium to form intermediate complex between substrate and Cu(II)-loaded polymers($K_f$) is followed by rate determining hydrolysis step($k_1$). The measured activation parameters for $k_1$ are ${\Delta}H^{\ddag}$ : $17.75{\pm}0.98kJ/mol$${\Delta}S^{\ddag}$ / : $-218.42{\pm}3.35J/mol$ K, $E^{\circ}_a$ : $20.22{\pm}0.98kJ/mo1$ for GB and ${\Delta}H^{\ddag}$ / : $11.16{\pm}1.15kJ/mol,$${\Delta}S^{\ddag}$ /: $-258.57{\pm}3.93J/mol$ K, $E^{\circ}_a$ : $13.64{\pm}1.15 kJ/mol$ for GD. Standard enthalpy/entropy changes corresponding to the intermediate complex formation constant $K_f$ are ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ : $37.05{\pm}2.19 kJ/mo1,$$ {\Delta}S^{\circ}$ : $163.12{\pm}7.49 J/mol$ K and ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ : 418.59{\pm}2.04 kJ/mol,$${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ : 4111.92{\pm}6.98 J/mol$ K for GB and GD, respectively, The electron push-pull mechanism by Cu(II)-loaded polymers lowers the P-F bond breaking energy(~400 kJ/mol) to less than 1/20 compared to the case in which no Cu(II)-loaded resin presents. Analysis of $K_f$ and 4k_1$ over pH=6.5~8.0 range suggest that the GB and GD hydrolysis occurs intramolecularily with $pK_a$ =7.29 for ligated $H_2O$ and $t_{1/2}$=36.9 sec, $pK_a$ = 7.06 and $t_{1/2}$=177.7 sec for GB and GD, respectively.
Epidermal growth factor(EGF) is one of polypeptide growth factors. EGF has been reported as a biological mediator which regulates activities of wound healing process including the cell proliferation, migration and metabolism. The purposes of this study is to evaluate the effects of EGF on the human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblast cells that promote regeneration of periodntal tissue. The mitogenic effects of epidermal growth factor on human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts were evaluated by determining the incorporation of 5-Bromo-2'-deoxy-uridine into DNA of the cells in a dose dependent manner. The prepared cells were the primary cultured gingival fibroblast and periodontal ligament cells from humans, the fourth or sixth subpassages were used in the experiments. Cells were seeded in DMEM containing 10% FBS. 1, 10, 50, 100, $200{\eta}g/ml$ and epidermal growth factor were added to the quiescent cells for 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. They were labeled with $10\{mu}l/200{\mu}l$ 5-Bromo-2'-deoxy-uridine for the last 6 hours of each culture. The results of the five determinants were presented as mean and S.D.. The results were as follows : The DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts were increased dose dependently by epidermal growth factor at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The mitogenic effects were similar at the 24 and 48 hours of epidermal growth factor, but the DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts generally decreased at 72 hours. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells were increased dose dependently by epidermal growth factor at 24 hours but the DNA synthetic activity decreased at $200{\eta}g/ml$ of each hour. Generally the maximum mitogenic effects were observed at the 48 hours application of epidermal growth factor. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells generally decreased lower at 24, 72 hours than at 48 hours the application of epidermal growth factor. In the comparison of DNA synthetic activity between human gingival fibroblasts and human periodontal ligament cells, human periodontal ligament cells had slightly higher proliferation activity than human gingival fibroblasts for a longer time at the high dosage of the epidermal growth factor. In conclusion, epidermal growth factor have important roles in the stimulation of DNA synthesis in human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts, and thus may be useful for clinical applications in periodontal regenerative procedures.

Purpose: For curative resection of recurrent gastric cancer, it is imperative that there be no unrecognized foci of tumoral disease outside the operation field. PET (positron emission tomography) with FDG (18 fluoro-2 deoxy-D-glucose) is a whole-body imaging technique that exploits the increased rate of glycolysis in tumor cells to detect disease. The authors evaluated the usefulness of FDG-PET in assessing resectability of recurrent gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Seven patients with recurrent gastric cancer were studied with FDG-PET from December 1998 to October 2000. All FDG-PET images were interpreted in conjunction with conventional diagnostic methods. All imaging results were correlated with the pathological diagnosis and clinical outcome. Results: A final diagnosis of recurrence was obtained at 14 sites in all 7 patients by histology or clinical follow up. Locoregional recurrence, including distant metastasis, developed in 6 of 7 patients and distant recurrence in only one. FDG-PET detected all recurrent sites (5 locoregional and 5 distant) in 5 patients without peritoneal recurrence, but did not detect peritoneal seeding in 2 patients with peritoneal recurrence. The accuracy of FDG-PET in estimating resectability was $71.4\%$ (5/7), and that of CT and PET together was $85.7\%$ (6/7). A curative resection could be performed in three of the recurrent patients (2 locoregional and 1 distant recurrence). Conclusion: Our results suggest that FDG-PET may be useful for detecting locoregional and distant recurrence of gastric cancer and for selecting appropriate treatment. However, considering that FDG-PET was limited in detecting peritoneal seeding and determining the exact anatomical extension of tumor, it should be used in conjunction with other anatomical images.

An experimental research was performed employing the two stage anaerobic digestion of the mixture of the nightsoil and septic tank sludge to determine the effects of various hydraulic retention time of the digestion on chemical characteristics and treatment effeciency, thus determining the proper retention time. Results of the research are as follows, 1. Volatile-acid decreased as HRT increased. 2. Alklinity and ammonia-N tended to increase as HRT increased as did pH values, however, were observed to be constant at higher HRT values than 15 days. 3. The removal efficiencies of TBOD, TCOD and VS increased as HRT increased. 4. The removal efficiency of volatile solid decreased as VS loading increased. 5. It was observed that the rates of gas production were: 0.33 with HRT of 5 days, 0.58 with HRT of 15 days and $0.57m^3/kg$ VS fed/day with HRT of 25 days respectively. It is believed that the highest rate of gas production was at HRT of 15 days. 6. The sludge settling experiment showed that the minimum settling time required to ensure the desired underflow concentraton was estimated to be 8.6 days.

Host shifting and host expansion of fungal plant pathogens increases the rate of emergence of new pathogens and the incidence of disease in various crops, which threaten global food security. Magnaporthe species cause serious disease in rice, namely rice blast disease, as well as in many alternative hosts, including wheat, barley, and millet. A severe outbreak of wheat blast due to Magnaporthe oryzae occurred recently in Bangladesh, after the fungus was introduced from South America, causing great loss of yield. This outbreak of wheat blast is of growing concern, because it might spread to adjacent wheat-producing areas. Therefore, it is important to understand the host range and population structure of M. oryzae and related species for determining the evolutionary relationships among Magnaporthe species and for managing blast disease in the field. Here, we collected isolates of M. oryzae and related species from various Poaceae species, including crops and weeds surrounding rice fields, in Korea and determined their phylogenetic relationships and host species specificity. Internal transcribed spacer-mediated phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. oryzae and related species are classified into four groups primarily including isolates from rice, crabgrass, millet and tall fescue. Based on pathogenicity assays, M. oryzae and related species can infect different Poaceae hosts and move among hosts, suggesting the potential for host shifting and host expansion in nature. These results provide important information on the diversification of M. oryzae and related species with a broad range of Poaceae as hosts in crop fields.

In this study, we investigated the cellular protective effects and mechanisms of nicotiflorin and its aglycone kaempferol isolated from Annona muricata. The protective effect of these components against $^1O_2$-induced cell damage was also studied by using L-ascorbic acid and (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol as controls. Kaempferol exhibited the most potent protective effect, followed by (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol and nicotiflorin. L-Ascorbic acid did not exhibit any cellular protective effects. To elucidate the mechanism underlying protective effects, the quenching rate constant of the singlet oxygen, free radical-scavenging activity, ROS-scavenging activity, and uptake ratio of the erythrocyte membrane were measured. The results showed that the cell membrane penetration is a key factor determining the cellular protective effect of kaempferol and its glycoside nicotiflorin. The result from L-ascorbic acid demonstrated that the cellular protective effect of a compound depends on its ability to penetrate the cell membrane and is independent of its antioxidant capacity. In addition, it is suggested that cellular protective effects of kaempferol and (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol depend not only on the cell permeability, but also on free radical- and ROS-scavenging activities. These results indicate that the cell permeability and free radical- and ROS- scavenging activities of antioxidants are major factors affecting the protection of cell membranes against the oxidative damage induced by photosensitization reaction.
