  • Experimental investigation on flame spread along suspended droplet arrays have been conducted with various droplet spacings and ambient air velocities. Especially, an opposed air stream is introduced to simulate fundamental flame spread behaviors in spray combustion. High-speed chemiluminescence imaging technique of OH radicals has been adopted to measure flame spread rates and to observe various flame spread behaviors. The fuel used is n-Decane and the air velocity varies from 0 to 17cm/s. The pattern of flame spread is grouped into two: a continuous mode and an intermittent one. It is found that there exists droplet spcings, above which flame spread does not occur. The increase of ambient air velocity causes the limit droplet spacing of flame spread to become small due to the increase of apparent flame stretch. As the ambient air velocity decreases, flame spread rate increases and then decreases after taking a maximum flame spread rate. This suggests that there exists a moderate air flowing to give a maximum flame spread rate due to enhanced chemical reaction by the increase of oxidizer concentration.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the spread on housing mortgage loans. In particular, this study analyzes how the spread has a decisive effect on housing mortgage loans when a structural change occurs in the spread. For the sake of empirical analysis, this study utilizes the housing mortgage loan, housing mortgage loan interest rate, COFIX interest rate, and spread. The period of analysis is from December 2010 to December 2017. Results of the analysis show that there is a statistically significant structural change in the spread and housing mortgage loans (May and June 2015, respectively). It is estimated that the structural change in the spread has an influence on the structural change in housing mortgage loans. In addition, the effect of the spread on housing mortgage loans is larger than the effect of the COFIX interest rate and the housing mortgage loan interest rate. This indicates that the adjustment of the spread is a significant burden on housing mortgage loans. As economic uncertainties both internally and externally are increasing, pressure on interest rate hikes is also increasing. Considering these circumstances, interest rate hikes will be inevitable in the future. If the base interest rate and the spread increase simultaneously at Korea's current economic level, it will obviously lead to an economic recession as the burden on the repayment of principal and interest of housing mortgage loans will increase. Therefore, it is imperative that financial authorities prepare institutional arrangements in order to protect financial consumers by preventing arbitrary calculation of the spread, which would not be objective and would not be transparent from the banks.

  • Forest fire ignition and spread characteristics are needed as basic data in fire management. Slope aspect of ignition point, spread direction, and wind direction at that time were analyzed and regression equations were proposed for predicting burned area, fire perimeter, head spread rate, and flank spread rate using combustion time using 101 forest fires broken out between 2007 and 2009 spring. 57% forest fires of investigated numbers were ignited in south, southwest, and southeast aspects and 68% of forest fires were spreaded to east, southeast, and northeast influenced by westerly wind. About 11.8ha forest was burned and 0.5km fire perimeter increase was predicted per hour. Head and flank spread rate were calculated 0.13km and 0.05km, respectively.

  • Experimental investigation on flame spread of blended fuel droplet arrays has been conducted for droplet diameters of 1.0mm and 0.75mm using high-speed chemiluminescence images of OH radical. The flame spread rate is measured with blended fuel composition, droplet diameter, and droplet spacing. Flame spread is categorized into two: a continuous mode and an intermittent one. There exist a limit droplet spacing, above which flame does not spread, and a droplet spacing of maximum flame spread, which is closely related to flame diameter. It is seen that flame spread rate is mainly dependent upon the relative position of flame zone within a droplet spacing. In case of large droplet, the increase of % volume of Heptane induces the shift of limit droplet spacing to a larger spacing since volatile Heptane plays a role of an enhancer of flame spread rate. In case of small droplet, the increase of % volume of Heptane leads to the shift of limit droplet spacing to a smaller droplet spacing. This is so because of the delayed chemical reaction time by the rapid increase of mass flux of fuel vapor for small droplet.

  • The wide use of metal dusts have been found in industrial field and many dust explosion accidents occur by fire spread of dust layer. In this study, we developed a new experimental device to examine fire and explosion characteristics of the dust layer. Aspects of the burning zone over metals(Mg, Zr, Ta, Ti, etc) and PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate) dust layers have been investigated experimentally to clarify behaviors (Spread rate and quenching distance) and effects of $N_2$ surrounding gas on the fire spread over metal dust layers. From the experimental result, it was found that the spread rate of metal dusts is larger than PMMA, the dependability of spread rate over the thickness of dust layer is small, and the minimum oxygen concentration of spread flame over Mg dust layer is 3.6-3.7 vol%. Since high correlation between the spread rate and the reciprocal of quenching distance was seen, relative risk prediction in those inflammable parameters can be predicted.

  • Flame spread experiments of a fuel droplet array were performed using a microgravity environment. N-decane, 1-octadecene, and the blends (50% : 50% vol.) of these fuels were used and the experiments were conducted at pressures up to 5.0 MPa, which are over the critical pressure of these fuels. Observations of the flame spread phenomenon were conducted for OH radical emission images recorded using a high-speed video camera. The flame spread rates were calculated based on the time history of the spreading forehead of the OH emission images. The flame spread rate of the n-decane droplet-array decreased with pressure and had its minimum at a pressure around half of the critical pressure and then increased again with pressure. It had its maximum at a pressure over the critical pressure and then decreased gradually. The pressure dependence of flame spread rate of 1-octadecene were similar to those of n-decan, but the magnitude of the spread rate was much smaller than that of n-decane. The variation of the flame spread for the blended fuel was similar to that of n-decane in the pressure range from atmospheric pressure to near the critical pressure of the blended fuel. When the pressure increased further, it approached to that of 1-octadecene. Numerically estimated gas-liquid equilibrium states proved that almost all the fuel gas which evaporated from the droplet at ordinary pressure consisted of n-decane whereas near and over the critical pressure, the composition of the fuel gas was almost the same as that of the liquid phase, so that the effects of 1-octadecene on the flame spread rate was significant.

  • Experiments have been conducted to clarify flame spread behavior over electrical wire near the end of wire with applied AC electric fields. It is seen that the flame spread behavior near the end of wire with applied AC electric fields are quite different from that in temporally linearly-increasing flame position. The flame spread behavior can be categorized into three regimes based on the relevance of flame shape and the slanted direction of spread flame to spread rate. Detailed explanations on the characteristics are made through thermal balance mechanism. Also, the effect of drop of molten PE and fuel vapor-jet in flame spread is also discussed.

  • Interest rate spreads indicate the conditions of the economy and serve as an indicator of the recession. The purpose of this study is to predict Korea's interest rate spreads using US data with long-term continuity. To this end, 27 US economic data were used, and the entire data was reduced to 5 dimensions through principal component analysis to build a dataset necessary for prediction. In the prediction model of this study, three RNN models (BasicRNN, LSTM, and GRU) predict the US interest rate spread and use the predicted results in the SVR ensemble model to predict the Korean interest rate spread. The SVR ensemble model predicted Korea's interest rate spread as RMSE 0.0658, which showed more accurate predictive power than the general ensemble model predicted as RMSE 0.0905, and showed excellent performance in terms of tendency to respond to fluctuations. In addition, improved prediction performance was confirmed through period division according to policy changes. This study presented a new way to predict interest rates and yielded better results. We predict that if you use refined data that represents the global economic situation through follow-up studies, you will be able to show higher interest rate predictions and predict economic conditions in Korea as well as other countries.

  • The spread rate of forest fire was analyzed on Samcheok forest fire that broke out on April 7, 2000 in Kunduck-Myun, Samcheok-City, Kangwon-Province and lasted for about 9 days. The spatial database including topography, overstory species distribution, micro-climate, daily fire front lines for the area was built using GIS and the daily spread pattern was investigated to determine a multiple regression equation to estimate forest fire spread rate. The results of the investigation showed that, on the first day, the forest fire spreaded out extremely fast up to 12.3m/min at about 10 a.m. until noon. After that, the forest fire spread rate fluctuated and slowed down as low as below 1m/min and quenched on April 15. The daily area-based spread rate along the fire spread line got to the peak of about 5,700ha on April 11, of which spread rates were recorded as 2.84m/min in the first half and 1.10m/min in the second half. Also, it was found that slope aspect, wind velocity and % area distribution of Pinus densiflora are the major factors affecting the spread rate of forest fire in this area.
