A study has been conducted experimentally to investigate behavior of ignition and flame spread over metal dust deposits with particle size using by a developed apparatus and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). Zr, Ta and Mg-Al(90:10 wt%) alloy metal powders including Mg and Ti with different particle size were used. Also we used PMMA(Polymethylmethacrylate) powder to compare the combustion properties to those of metal powders. When dust layers were more than 5 mm in thickness, the dependency of deposit depth on flame spread rate over dust layer was not shown. With decreasing mean particle diameter, flame spread rate over Ti dust layer decreased, while the spread rate over Mg dust layer increased. For mean diameter of $51{\mu}m$, fire spread rate over pure Mg dust layer decreased to about 50 percent in Mg-Al(90:10 wt%) dust layer. The oxide thickness of metal dust used in this study tended to be inversely proportional with the spread rate, and it was quite small for influence with particle size. From the results of TGA for Ti and Mg, weight increasing curves(550 for Mg, 578 for Ta) were observed in the oxidation process, and they seems to be caused by ignition of upper dust layer.
Microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) processes for removal of particulate materials (i.e., turbidity, microorganisms and viruses) have been used to produce drinking water with higher quality. As membrane filtration technique has become widely applied for drinking water treatment, the importance of membrane integrity test (MIT) has also been increasingly emphasized. The results of pressure decay test (PDT) were presented in the paper to monitor membrane integrity. In this paper the PDT was carried out with deliberately-defected membrane fibers to evaluate the sensitivity of PDT on membrane fiber damage. Variation of pressure decay rate and removal rate were investigated to evaluate the impact of defection (defection ratio) and pore size of membrane. The membrane integrity could be successfully monitored by the PDT. The pressure decay rate varied from $0.002{\sim}0.189kg_f/cm^2hr$ with the initial pressure ranged from 0.2 to $1.0kg_f/cm^2hr$. Higher initial pressure which provided with higher pressure decay rate was preferred to evaluate the defection of membrane fiber. As for the particle removal rate, the Log Removal Rate (LRV) of kaolin solution decreased significantly from 3.78 to 2.31 when one fiber out of 3,200 fibers was cut. The membranes with different pore size were tested to evaluate virus removal efficiency. The virus removal rate of the MF membrane ($0.1{\mu}m$) was about 30% although the poliovirus was smaller than the pore size of the MF membrane, indicating that the removal rate was much lower than Korea Water Works Association (KWWA) certificate LRV of 1.5.

A new approach has been adopted to remove the hot particulates from nuclear facilities, KAERI, South Korea, by using the new compact cyclone train, made of steel ness steel, with optional vortex finder length. Flow rate results showed a dramatic change in removal efficiency, performance was changed with the change of exit tube length. The 15 m/s flow rate was found suitable one for new equipment with the 49 mm optimum exit tube length for 76 mm cyclone body diameter. Results shows the removal efficiency for $1\;{\mu}m$ was more than $65\%$ and for $10\;{\mu}m$ was seen ${\~}97\%$. Over 15 m/s flow rate, was not shown much different in removal efficiency. The removal efficiency increased with the flow rate, and pressure drop. Cut size diameter decrease with the inlet flow rate. Cut size diameter found lowest with 49 mm exit tube length and 15 m/s flow rate. For filters the performance decreased with the inlet velocity increased.
The production process of a fine size fraction of Korean kaolin by ball milling is studied in this paper by analyzing the size distribution the size distribution of products with the Rosin-rammle formular and the rate process of cumulative size fractions with Alyavdin-Chujyo's formular. The size distribution is found to be divided in three regions a coarser part influenced by feed size an intermediate part where the size distribution shows a clear straight line relationship on Rosin-Rammler chart and the finest part with the ultimate limit of fineness by ball milling. Alyavdin-Chujyo's relationship is found to be valid over a very wide range of milling conditions. For different feed sizes the Alyavdin-Chujyo's relationship gives a group of straight lines with a common intersection point which can be defined as the limiting point of the persistent component region.

Vapor Axial Deposition (VAD), one of optical fiber preform fabrication processes, is performed by deposition of submicron-size silica particles that are synthesized by combustion of raw chemical materials. In this study, flow field is assumed to be a forced uniform flow perpendicularly impinging on a rotating disk. Similarity solutions obtained in our previous study are utilized to solve the particle transport equation. The particles are approximated to be in a polydisperse state that satisfies a lognormal size distribution. A moment model is used in order to predict distributions of particle number density and size simultaneously. Deposition of the particles on the disk is examined considering convection, Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and coagulation with variations of the forced flow velocity and the disk rotating velocity. The deposition rate and the efficiency directly increase as the flow velocity increases, resulting from that the increase of the forced flow velocity causes thinner thermal and diffusion boundary layer thicknesses and thus causes the increase of thermophoretic drift and Brownian diffusion of the particles toward the disk. However, the increase of the disk rotating speed does not result in the direct increase of the deposition rate and the deposition efficiency. Slower flow velocity causes extension of the time scale for coagulation and thus yields larger mean particle size and its geometric standard deviation at the deposition surface. In the case of coagulation starting farther from the deposition surface, coagulation effects increases, resulting in the increase of the particle size and the decrease of the deposition rate at the surface.

Recently, rainwater harvesting facilities have increasingly constructed mainly in elementary schools and government buildings. Nevertheless, few methods are available for efficient planning and design of rainwater harvesting facilities by considering the weather conditions and purpose of rainwater management in each site, which may lead to a construction of uneconomic facilities. The current method estimates the size of rainwater storage tank by multiplying the size of building or plottage with a certain ratio and has many limitations. In this study, we first developed a method for planning and design of rainwater storage facilities using $Rainstock^{TM}$ model, which is based on mass balance, and economic analysis. Then, the model was applied for the design of a rainwater harvesting facility in a building with the catchment area of $1,000m^2$. The model calculation indicated that the economic feasibility of rainwater harvesting depends on not only the size of storage tank but also the water usage rate. When the water usage rate is $1m^3/day$, the rainwater harvesting facility is not cost-effective regardless of the size of the storage tank. With increasing the water usage rate, the economical efficiency of the facility was improved for a specific size of the storage tank. Based on the model calculation, the optimum tank sizes for $5m^3/day$ and $10m^3/day$ of water usage rates were $24m^3$ and $57m^3$, respectively. It is expected that the model is useful for optimization of rainwater storage facilities in planning and designing steps.
In the shipping industry, it is essential to engage in the preemptive prediction of freight rate volatility through market monitoring. Considering that freight rates have already started to fall, the loss of shipping companies will soon be uncontrollable. Therefore, in this study, factors affecting the freight rates of bulk carriers, which have relatively large freight rate volatility as compared to container freight rates, were quantified and analyzed. In doing so, we intended to contribute to future shipping market monitoring. We performed an analysis using a vector error correction model and estimated the influence of six independent variables on the charter rates of bulk carriers by Handy Size, Supramax, Panamax, and Cape Size. The six independent variables included the bulk carrier fleet volume, iron ore traffic volume, ribo interest rate, bunker oil price, and Euro-Dollar exchange rate. The dependent variables were handy size (32,000 DWT) spot charter rates, Supramax 6 T/C average charter rates, Pana Max (75,000 DWT) spot charter, and Cape Size (170,000 DWT) spot charter. The study examined charter rates by size of bulk carriers, which was different from studies on existing specific types of ships or fares in oil tankers and chemical carriers other than bulk carriers. Findings revealed that influencing factors differed for each ship size. The Libo interest rate had a significant effect on all four ship types, and the iron ore traffic volume had a significant effect on three ship types. The Ribo rate showed a negative (-) relationship with Handy Size, Supramax, Panamax, and Cape Size. Iron ore traffic influenced three types of linearity, except for Panamax. The size of shipping companies differed depending on their characteristics. These findings are expected to contribute to the establishment of a management strategy for shipping companies by analyzing the factors influencing changes in the freight rates of charterers, which have a profound effect on the management performance of shipping companies.

This paper considers the influence of floc on the sedimentation rate for the cohesive material. The effects of floc density and size changes were also taking into consideration during the experiment. The settling velocity of a discrete floc was measured in a quiescent water column. Floc diameter and density were investigated using a modified Stokes equation with some constants such as water density, viscosity, material density and the floc fractal dimension $n_f$ obtained from the relationship between the floc diameter and the floc settling. The floc diameter of quartz and alumina increased at increasing initial concentrations. The floc size of quartz with increasing NaCl concentration varied between approximately 0.8 um to $10{\mu}m$. Floc density decreased as floc size increased. The floc settling velocity and the floc diameter have a straight line relationship on a logarithm. The floc fractal dimension nf was 2.65 with increasing of initial concentration and 2.93 with increasing of NaCl. The exponent n to predict the settling velocity was proposed and varied from 1 to 1.93.
Mobile computing has such characteristics as portability, wireless network, mobility, etc. These characteristics cause various problems to mobile terminals like frequent disconnection, high error rate, and varying network status. These problems motivate us to develop an adaptive error control mechanism for supporting multimedia service in mobile computing environment. In this paper, we propose the Adaptive Error Control(AEC) scheme using client's buffer size and current error rate. After categorizing the status into four groups according to client's buffer size and current error rate, this scheme applies an appropriate error control scheme to each status. In this scheme, thresholds of buffer size and error rate are determined by the data transmission time, play rate and average VOP size, and by the probability of error for a sequence of packets. The performance of proposed scheme is evaluated by flaying MPEG-4 files on an experimental client/server environment, respectively. The results show that error correcting rate is similar to other schemes while the time for correcting error reduce a little. In addition, the size of data for correcting error is decreased by 23% compared with FEC and Hybrid FEC, respectively. Theses results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is more suitable in mobile computing environment with small bandwidth and varying environment than existing schemes.
In an effort to localize the spray-dryer which is markedly used for drying food materials, a experiment was carried out with a wheel type atomizer locally designed and manufactured to evaluate the effect of rotational speed, feed rate and physical properties of liquid food material on the droplet size, and to develop a model to predict the droplet size sprayed at various operational conditions. The result are summarized as follows. 1. The frequency of droplet size sprayed from the atomizer at every treatment were similar to normal distributions. 2. Under the test conditions adopted in this study, that is, rotational speed of the atomizer ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 rpm (55.0 m/sec - 73.3 m/sec), feed rate from 14 to 37 kg/hr and viscosity of the material from 1.14 to 350 cP, the mean volume-surface dia. of droplets was decreased as increase in rotational speed and was not affected significantly by the feed rate and viscosity. 3. Through the dimensional analysis, a prediction model was developed as follows : $$\frac{Dvs}{r}=K[\frac{Q}{{\mu}r}]^a[\frac{rN^2}{g}]^b[\frac{{\rho}^2r^3g}{{\mu}^2}]^c[\frac{L}{r}]^d$$ and it was proved that the above model was better in degree of fitness than other models reported. 4. A prediction equation for the droplet size sprayed from the atomizer under the test was expressed as follows : $$\frac{Dvs}{r}=0.0215[\frac{Q}{{\mu}r}]^{0.06}[\frac{rN^2}{g}]^{0.3314}[\frac{{\mu}^2}{{\rho}^2r^3g}]^{0.0158}$$.
