  • In this study, RuO$_2$thin films were etched in inductively coupled $O_2$plasma. Etching characteristics of RuO$_2$thin films including etch rate and selectivity were evaluated as a function of rf power in $O_2$plasma and gas mixing ratio in $O_2$/Ar plasma. In $O_2$ plasma, the etch rate of RuO$_2$thin film increases as rf power increases. In $O_2$/Ar plasma, the etch rate of RuO$_2$thin film increases up to 10% Ar, but decrease with furthermore increasing Ar mixing ratio. The enhanced etch rate can be obtained with increasing rf power and small addition of Ar gas.

  • This paper considers an aperiodic preventive maintenance (PM) model for repairable systems, in which the time intervals between two consecutive preventive maintenances are unequal. To propose such an aperiodic PM model, we assume that each PM reduces the current hazard rate by a certain amount which depends on the number of PMs performed previously. If the system fails between PMs, the minimal repair is performed and the hazard rate remains unchanged after the repair. We give the exact expressions for the hazard rate function for the aperiodic PM model. Based on the proposed aperiodic PM model, we suggest the maximum likelihood method to estimate the parameters characterizing the model and apply the method to the case of Weibull distribution. Numerical examples for estimating the parameters are presented for the purpose of illustration.

  • By combining the classical Newton's method with the pseudo-secant method, pseudo-secant-Newton's method is constructed and its order and rate of convergence are investigated. Given a function $f:\mathbb{R}{\rightarrow}\mathbb{R}$ that has a simple real zero ${\alpha}$ and is sufficiently smooth in a small neighborhood of ${\alpha}$, the convergence behavior is analyzed near ${\alpha}$ for pseudo-secant-Newton's method. The order of convergence is shown to be cubic and the rate of convergence is proven to be $\(\frac{f^{{\prime}{\prime}}(\alpha)}{2f^{\prime}(\alpha)}\)^2$. Numerical experiments show the validity of the theory presented here and are confirmed via high-precision programming in Mathematica.

  • The fracture energy evaluated from the previous experimental results can be simulated by using the modified singular fracture process zone (S-FPZ) model. The fracture model has two fracture properties of strain energy release rate for crack extension and crack close stress versus crack width relationship $f_{ccs}(w)$ for fracture process zone (FPZ) development. The $f_{ccs}(w)$ relationship is not sensitive to specimen geometry and crack velocity. The fracture energy rate in the FPZ increases linearly with crack extension until the FPZ is fully developed. The fracture criterion of the strain energy release rate depends on specimen geometry and crack velocity as a function of crack extension. The behaviors of micro-cracking, micro-crack localization and full development of the FPZ in concrete can be explained theoretically with the variation of strain energy release rate with crack extension.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the variation of tool electrode edge wear and machining performance outputs, namely, the machining rate (workpiece removal rate), tool wear rate and the relative wear, with the varying machining parameters (pulse time, discharge current and dielectric flushing pressure) in EDM die sinking. The edge wear profiles obtained are modeled by using the circular arcs, exponential and poller functions. The variation of radii of the circular arcs with machining parameters is given. It is observed that the exponential function models the edge wear profiles of the electrodes, very accurately. The variation of exponential model parameters with machining parameters is presented.

  • In order to determine the wear properties of AIP (Arc Ion Plating) deposition, wear process was evaluated by using a Falex test machine. Also, in order to determine the effects of coating material on the wear process, TiC, TiN, and TiCN coatings of thickness about 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$∼6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ coated by Arc ion plating deposition method were tested. The wear property was determined under a dry sliding condition as a function of the applied load, sliding distance, sliding velocity and temperature. The results show that when wear of the coating-layer occurred, specific wear amount increased with the wear rate. At initial state, the wear rate rapidly increased, but it gradually reduced as the velocity increased. Also, when raising the temperature, the wear rate increased in the order of TiCN, TiN and TiC due to the frictional heat.

  • This paper discusses the stochastic analysis and the statistical inference of a quadratic failure rate semi-Markov reliability model. Maximum likelihood procedure will be used to obtain the estimators of the parameters included in this reliability model. Based on the assumption that the lifetime and repair time of the system units are random variables with quadratic failure rate, the reliability function of this system is obtained. Also, the distribution of the first passage time of this system is derived. Many important special cases are discussed.

  • The optimum dosage control is presumably the goal of every water treatment plant. However it is difficult to determine the dosage rate of coagulant, due to nonlinearity, multivariables and slow response characteristics, etc. To deal with this difficulty, the real number genetic-fuzzy system was used in determining the dosage rate of the coagulant. The genetic algorithms are excellently robust in complex optimization problems. Since it uses randomized operators and searches for the best chromosome without auxiliary informations from a population which consists of codings of parameter set. To apply this algorithms, we made the real number rule table and membership function from the actual operation data of the water treatment plant. We determined optimum dosages of coagulant(LAS) using the fuzzy operation and compared them with the dosage rate of the actual operation data.

  • The shrinkage rate of solid state sintering has been theoretically derived by combining the rate equation of material transport and the net free energy change resulting from the decrease of solid-vapor interface and the increase of grain boundary during sintering. For a sinteing model an idealized situation of the spherical particles with BCC packing was taken as the initial condition and the shrinkage was assumed to occur by forming the flat circualr grain boundaries on each particle. The plotted shrinkage rates as a function of grain boundary to surface energy ratio $(gamma_g/gamma_s)$ have shown that the relative density increases linearly at the initial stage of sintering but the shrinkage rate is decreased upon further sintering due to a decrease in driving force for densificaton. It has been also shown that the densification is critically affected by the $gamma_g/gamma_s$ ratio. In order to get the complete densificatin the ratio should be less than $sqrt{3}$. Any additive or atmospheric condition causing the decrease of$_g/gamma_s$ ratio will enhance sintering.

  • This paper presents the influence of the loading rate on the room temperature fracture toughness of a brittle Al2O3 and a SiC whisker reinforced Al2O3 composite. Dynamic fracture toughness tests were conduced using compressive fatigue pre-cracked notched round bars loaded in tension to produce a stress intensity rate K1=106 MPa√m/sec. The experimental results show that for each loading rate the fracture toughness values obtained for the ceramic matrix composite are higher than the corresponding values for the single phase alumina. In addition, both the reinforced and unreinforced ceramic are singnificantly tougher under dynamic loading than static loading. This dynamic and quasi-static fracture initiation behaviro can be interpreted by identifying quantitatively the mode of fractuer initiation as a function of loading rate.
