  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the ethnic characteristics of official uniforms of Qing(淸)) by comparing the rank systems of official uniforms of Ming(명(明)) and Qing(淸)) dynasties. As research documents, Dai-Ming-Huidian(大明會典)) and Qing-Huidian-Tu(淸明會圖)) have been used. This research shows that there are many traditional characteristics of Manchurians (滿族)) in the official uniforms of Qing(淸)) dynasty. The characteristics are as follows: First, Qing dynasty made their own official uniform based on the traditional Manchurians(滿族)) costume, and added rank system on it. Second, Qing dynasty used the animal's leather as the material of official uniforms and distinguished the level of the uniforms according to the rerity value of rareness, color, and warmth of the leather. Third, Qing dynasty used pearls produced in Manchuria as the highest level, as opposed to jades and rhinoceros horns of Ming. Fourth, Qing dynasty eliminated the animal's rank system of twelve patterns which had been used for whole history of China, but the Emperor is the only man who is able to use twelve patterns. Qing dynasty made her own pattern system of standstill/moving dragons and standstill/moving pythons. Fifth, Qing dynasty used the rank system by colors in the order of yellow, red, and blue consistently over various official uniforms, while Ming used different color orders for different uniforms.

  • Herpes zoster oticus is one of complication of varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation in the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve, which is the most common presentation of herpes zoster in the head and neck region. However, VZV infection of the larynx has rarely been described in the literature compared with Herpes zoster oticus. Moreover, zoster laryngopharyngitis simultaneously occurred with recurred Herpes zoster oticus which has no newly developing motor dysfunction has not been reported yet. Therefore, these diseases are difficult to diagnose due to its rareness. However, distinctive appearances such as unilateral herpetic mucosal eruptions and vesicles are useful and essential in making a quick and accurate diagnosis. Thus, we report a characteristic case of zoster laryngopharyngitis simultaneously occurred with recurred Herpes zoster oticus not accompanied by any newly developing motor palsy.

  • On the purpose of development of antioxidative compounds from natural sources, 38 plants known to have antioxidant activity have been examined concerning DPPH radical scavenging activity. Among 13 plants exhibiting the activity, the seed of Carthamus tinctorius L, was selected as resources to search for active compounds due to rareness of study. The seed of the plant has been used as edible oil or preventive and remedial drugs for osteoporosis, arthritis. To reveal the principal component manifesting the antioxidant activity, the MeOH extracts was successively solvent-fractionated with EtOAc, n-BuOH and water. In order to isolate active component from the EtOAc fractions, application of silica gel column chromatographies and activity tests were repeated for a active component to be isolated. Its chmical structure was determined to be N-feruloylserotonin, a conjugated serotonin compound, by the interpretation of spectral data, NMR. MS and the adaptation of chemical reactions.

  • Bascule bridge, with its use to help vessels ply, has a several examples overseas of being serviced for more than decades years by careful maintenance, admitted its significance as landmarks for its rareness. Yeongdo Bridge, the sole bascule bridge in Korea was reconstructed in 2013 after being demolished because of its corrosion and aging, and now operates once in a day. Recently, safety inspections are executed thanks to demands getting higher for maintenance and safety of bridges, but measurement and analysis about bascule bridges are scarce. This study includes the analysis of the bascule bridge's behavior such as stress, vibration and reaction in normal condition and while it lifts up, based on measurement. We expect that this study will be used as an initial data to compare and confirm bridge's changes as service year and the number of operation increase.

  • Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) in the head and neck is a rare benign lesion containing glandular tissue covered with ciliated respiratory epithelium. In the head and neck, REAH of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx have been reported in literature. Due to rareness of REAH and insufficient knowledge of its imaging features, the diagnosis can be challenging when we encounter a non-specific cystic mass at an uncommon site in the head or neck. Here, we report the case of a pathologically confirmed REAH showing a cystic mass centered at the buccal space (retromaxillary fat pad) with CT and MRI findings.

  • In this study the geotechnical system response probabilities (SRP) of the failure modes caused by the interal erosion in three dams with different histories of defects in Korea were analyzed via the internal erosion toolbox developed by USACE. The calculated values of SRP were compared with the values reported for other dams in worldwide and also the statistics on the past failures of dams and embankments in Korea. The calculated values of SRP related to the internal erosion adjacent to the conduits or spillway structures are as high as in the order of $10^{-5}$ that is significantly greater than the SRP values related to other mechanisms of internal erosion. The statistical data showing that the interal erosion adjacent to the structure is the most frequent cause of the failure of the dam in Korea could be a collateral evidence of this finding. In contrast, the values of SRP related to the internal erosion through foundation, one of the major causes of dam failure in worldwide, are relatively as low as in the order of $10^{-7}$. This result could be comparable with the rareness of the failure cases of dam caused by the internal erosion through foundation in Korea.
