Recently, ESA (European Space Agency) has launched CryoSAT-2 for polar ice observations. CryoSAT-2 is equipped with a SIRAL (SAR/interferometric radar altimeter), which is a high spatial resolution radar altimeter. Conventional altimeters cannot measure a precise three-dimensional ground position because of the large footprint diameter, while SIRAL altimeter system accomplishes a precise three-dimensional ground positioning by means of interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique. In this study, we developed an efficient SIRAL SARIn mode processing technique to measure a precise three-dimensional ground position. We first simulated SIRAL SARIn RAW data for the ideal target by assuming the flat Earth and linear flight track, and second accessed the precision of three-dimensional geopositioning achieved by the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of 1) azimuth processing that determines the squint angle from Doppler centroid, and 2) range processing that estimates the look angle from interferometric phase. In the ideal case, the precisions of look and squint angles achieved by the proposed algorithm were about -2.0 ${\mu}deg$ and 98.0 ${\mu}deg$, respectively, and the three-dimensional geopositioning accuracy was about 1.23 m, -0.02 m, and -0.30 m in X, Y and Z directions, respectively. This means that the SIRAL SARIn mode processing technique enables to measure the three-dimensional ground position with the precision of several meters.

This paper presents a pulse radar system to detect drones based on a target fluctuation model, specifically the Swerling target model. Because drones are small atypical objects and are mainly composed of non-conducting materials, their radar cross-section value is low and fluctuating. Therefore, determining the target fluctuation model and applying a proper integration method are important. The proposed system is herein experimentally verified and the results are discussed. A prototype design of the pulse radar system is based on radar equations. It adopts three different pulse modes and a coherent pulse integration to ensure a high signal-to-noise ratio. Outdoor measurements are performed with a prototype radar system to detect Doppler frequencies from both the drone frame and blades. The results indicate that the drone frame and blades are detected within an instrumental maximum range. Additionally, the results show that the drone's frame and blades are close to the Swerling 3 and 4 target models, respectively. By the analysis of the Swerling target models, proper integration methods for detecting drones are verified and can thus contribute to increasing in detectability.
Recently, a multi-mode radar system was designed for efficient operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in various environments, which has the advantage of being able to integrate and utilize methods of the pulse Doppler (PD) radar and the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. For the range detection part of the multi-mode radar signal processor (RSP), the hardware structure using the FFT processor and the IFFT processor is required to be designed in a way that improves efficiency on the area side. In addition, given the radar application environment that requires a variety of distance resolutions, FFT processors need to support variable-length operations. In this paper, the FFT processor and IFFT processor in multi-mode RSP range estimation are designed and proposed as hardware for a single FFT processor that supports variable length operation of 16-1024 points. The proposed FFT processor designed in hardware description language (HDL) and can be implemented with 7,452 logic elements and 5,116 registers.

SAR is a Radar to obtain the video information using a radio wave. Platform emit the radio wave, depending backscattered waves returned from the target object the signal to the distance, to create a topographical map is recorded in two-dimensional image. In this paper, through a simulation to apply a variety of window in the SAR image processing for SAR image recovery is to study the application effect of the window, as a result, at the side of the signal of the SNR, Flattop window to improve the best performance it was confirmed to show.
SAR interferometry (InSAR) using the space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) have recently become one of the most effective tools monitoring surface changes caused by landslides, earthquakes, subsidences or volcanic eruption. This study focuses on examining the feasibility of InSAR using the RADARSAT data. Although the RABARSAT SAR with its high resolution and variable incidence angle has several advantages for repeat-pass InSAR, it has two key limitations: first, the orbit is not precisely known; and second, RADARSAT's 24-day repeat pass interval is not very favourable for retaining useful coherence. In this study, two pairs of RADARSAT data in the Nahanni area, NWT, Canada have been tested. We will discuss about the special consideration required on the interferometric processing steps specifically for RADARSAT data including image co-registration, spectral filtering in both azimuth and range, estimation of the interferometric baseline, and correction of the interferogram with respect to the "flat earth" phase contribution. Preliminary results can be summarized as: i) the properly designed azimuth filter based upon the antenna characteristic improves coherence considerably if difference in Doppler centroid of the two images is relatively large; ii) the co-registration process combined by fringe spectrum and amplitude cross-correlation techniques results in optimal matching; iii) the baseline is not always possible to be estimated from the definitive orbit information.
This paper introduces core techniques on ship detection and tracking based on a compact HF radar platform which is necessary to establish a wide-area surveillance network. Currently, most HF radar sites are primarily optimized for observing sea surface radial velocities and bearings. Therefore, many ship detection systems are vulnerable to error sources such as environmental noise and clutter when they are applied to these practical surface current observation purpose systems. In addition, due to Korea's geographical features, only compact HF radars which generates non-uniform antenna response and has no information on target information are applicable. The ship detection and tracking techniques discussed in this paper considers these practical conditions and were evaluated by real data collected from the Yellow Sea, Korea. The proposed method is composed of two parts. In the first part, ship detection, a constant false alarm rate based detector was applied and was enhanced by a PCA subspace decomposition method which reduces noise. To merge multiple detections originated from a single target due to the Doppler effect during long CPIs, a clustering method was applied. Finally, data association framework eliminates false detections by considering ship maneuvering over time. According to evaluation results, it is claimed that the proposed method produces satisfactory results within certain ranges.

A 3-D multi-function radar(MFR) is a modern radar to provide various target information, such as range, doppler, and angle by performing surveillance, multiple target tracking, and missile guidance. In this paper, we introduced a real-time radar signal processor(RSP), which is a crucial component of MFR with its design, implementation using high-speed multiple DSP, and performance. Additionally, we verified that several advanced signal processing algorithms were well-performed in our RSP, such as MCA-CFAR algorithm for target detection in clutter environment, range and velocity measurement algorithm using discriminator estimation, and noise jammer detection algorithm using local minimum selection.

Recently, maintenance engineering and technology for civil and building structures have begun to draw big attention and actually the number of structures that need to be evaluate on structural safety due to deterioration and performance degradation of structures are rapidly increasing. When stiffness is decreased because of deterioration of structures and member cracks, dynamic characteristics of structures would be changed. And it is important that the damaged areas and extent of the damage are correctly evaluated by analyzing dynamic characteristics from the actual behavior of a structure. In general, typical measurement instruments used for structure monitoring are dynamic instruments. Existing dynamic instruments are not easy to obtain reliable data when the cable connecting measurement sensors and device is long, and have uneconomical for 1 to 1 connection process between each sensor and instrument. Therefore, a method without attaching sensors to measure vibration at a long range is required. The representative applicable non-contact methods to measure the vibration of structures are laser doppler effect, a method using GPS, and image processing technique. The method using laser doppler effect shows relatively high accuracy but uneconomical while the method using GPS requires expensive equipment, and has its signal's own error and limited speed of sampling rate. But the method using image signal is simple and economical, and is proper to get vibration of inaccessible structures and dynamic characteristics. Image signals of camera instead of sensors had been recently used by many researchers. But the existing method, which records a point of a target attached on a structure and then measures vibration using image processing technique, could have relatively the limited objects of measurement. Therefore, this study conducted shaking table test and field load test to verify the validity of the method that can measure multi-point displacement responses of structures using image processing technique.

This paper presents two different approaches for channel estimation of IMT-2000 pilot symbol-assisted W-CDMA reverse link over Rayleigh fading channels of one and two paths. By obtaining BER performance through computer simulations, the proposed algorithms of 2-point second-order interpolation and IDD BWMA are compared with the performance of existing interpolation and adaptive algorithms. The BER performance of the proposed algorithms is superior to WMSA, linear and second-order Gaussian interpolation, LMS, and RLS algorithm in fast fading channels. In particular, the BER performance of the IDD BWMA algorithm is nearly insensitive for Doppler frequency within simulation range $E_b/N_0$ = 28 dB. The two proposed algorithms also have relatively simple structure and similar processing delay in comparison to the existing algorithms. Therefore, these algorithms are more suitable for high-speed mobile communication environments.

In this paper, we present the basic design results for high-resolution radar development at S-band frequency that can precisely measure the miss distance between two targets. The basic system requirement is proposed for the design of a 3.5 GHz linear frequency-modulated (LFM) radar with maximum detection distance and distance resolution of 2 km and 1 m, respectively, and the specifications of each module are determined using the radar equation. Our calculations revealed a signal-to-noise ratio ${\geq}30dB$ with a bandwidth of 150 MHz, transmission power of 43 dBm for the power amplifier, gain of 26 dBi for the antenna, noise figure of 8 dB, and radar cross-section of $1m^2$ at a target distance of 2 km from the radar. Based on the calculation results and the theory and method of LFM radar design, the hardware was designed using software defined radar technology. The results of the subsequent field test are presented that prove that the designed radar system satisfies the requirements.
