  • The deep ocean engineering basin (DOEB) of the Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) is equipped with an extreme-environment reproduction facility that can analyze the motion characteristics of offshore structures and ships. In recent years, there have been requirements for a wide range of six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) motion measurements for performing maneuvering tests and free-running tests of target objects (offshore structures or ships). This study introduces the process of developing a wide-area motion measurement technology by incorporating the auto-tracking technology of the towing carriage system to overcome the existing 6-DOF motion measurement limitation. To realize a wide range of motion measurements, the automatic tracking control system of the towing carriage in the DOEB was designed as a speed control method. To verify the control performance, the characteristics of the towing carriage according to the variation in control gain were analyzed. Finally, a wide range of motions was tested using a model test object (a remotely operated vehicle (ROV)), and the wide-area motion measurement technology was implemented using an automatic tracking control system for a towing carriage.

  • Employing non-associated flow rule and Power-Law failure criterion, the failure mechanisms of tunnel roof in homogeneous and layered soils are studied in present analysis. From the viewpoint of energy, limit analysis upper bound theorem and variation principle are introduced to study the influence of dilatancy on the collapse mechanism of rectangular tunnel considering effects of supporting force and seepage force. Through calculation, the collapsing curve expressions of rectangular tunnel which are excavated in homogeneous soil and layered soils respectively are derived. The accuracy of this work is verified by comparing with the existing research results. The collapsing surface shapes with different dilatancy coefficients are draw out and the influence of dilatancy coefficient on possible collapsing range is analyzed. The results show that, in homogeneous soil, the potential collapsing range decreases with the decrease of the dilatancy coefficient. In layered soils, the total height and the width on the layered position of possible collapsing block increase and the width of the falling block on tunnel roof decrease when only the upper soil's dilatancy coefficient decrease. When only the lower soil's dilatancy coefficient decrease or both layers' dilatancy coefficients decrease, the range of the potential collapsing block reduces.

  • The impact ionization rate of thethighly-doped AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well structure is calculated, which is an important parameter ot design theinfrared detector APD and the novel neural device. In conjunction with ensemble monte carlo method and quantum mechanical treatment, we analyze the effects of the parameters of quantum well structure on the impact ionization rate. Since the number of the occupied subbands increases while the energy of the subbands decreases as the width of quantum well increases, the impact ionization rate increases in the range of th esmall well width but gradually the increament slows down and is finally saturated. Due to the effect of the energy of the injected electrons into the quantum well and the tunneling through the barrier, the impact ionization rate increases for the range of the small barrier width and decreases for the range of the large barrier width. Thus, there exists a barrier width to maximize the impact ionzation rate for a mole fraction x, and the barrier width moves to the larger vaue as the mole fraction x increases. The impact ionization rate is much more sensitive to the variation of the doping density than that of the other quantum well parameters. We found that there is a limit of the doping density to confine the electronics in the quantum well effectively.

  • The proteins from functional rice cultivars (Nogwonchalbyeo, Giant embryonic, Arhyangchalbyeo, and Goamibyeo) and general white rice were extracted and separated using two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis. A wide variation in the molecular weight (MW) and pH range of the expressed proteins in rice samples were observed. The green-kerneled rice (Nogwonchalbyeo) exhibited proteins with MW of 9-57 kDa and appeared at a pH range of 4-7. The Giant embryonic contained proteins with MW of 31-63 kDa and a pH range of 5-6. The aromatic glutinous rice (Arhyangchalbyeo) showed proteins with MW of 24-28 and pH of 5.8-6.8. The high-amylose rice (Goamibyeo) exhibited proteins with MW of 3-63 and pH of 5.2-5.6. The identified proteins uniquely found and highly expressed in each cultivar may have a significant role on rice functionality. The results illustrate that the 2D gel electrophoresis is a valuable method in the determination of the protein expression profiles in functional rice grains and may be useful in the identification of specific marker proteins associated with the functional property of rice.

  • Lee, Moon Won reported by 63 kinds lescribing the petrography and bulk chemical Composition in Petrology of Cheju volcanic island. The total Chemical Composition data was analyzed by the program of FORTRAN77. First, the Conversition equations and the scatter diagram were examined to the analysis, by the least square method. Next, a statistical data requested a mean Value, maximum value, minimum value, the range, the standard deviation, the variance, the Standord Error and the Coefficient of variation. In the standard deviation, a small Composition is MnO and P$_2$O$\sub$5/, a large Composition is SiO$_2$, Mgo and FeO. The Standard error and the variance were the tandency looked like the Standard deviation well. However, the Coefficient Variation differs from the Standard deviation. Where, a large Coefficient of variation are H$_2$O$\^$-/ and H$_2$O$\^$+/, a small Coefficient of variation are Al$_2$O$_3$ and SiO$_2$. The Correlation of Coefficient Can be Calculated numerically from the relation between SiO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$ and TiO$_2$ to other Compositions.

  • For enhancing the mechanical properties of LTE (low thermal expansion) cast steel, systematic researches have been carried out. The effects of alloying elements such as vanadium, molybdenum and carbon on the hardness and linear thermal expansion coefficient were investigated. In the range of $0.5{\sim}2.3\;wt%$ carbon, addition of 1.73 wt% carbon caused hardness increase due to the formation of eutectic carbide having high hardness but over the range of 1.73 wt% carbon, hardness was decreased. Thermal expansion coefficient increases with carbon contents. In the LTE cast steel containing 0.6 wt% carbon, hardness increased up to 1.96 wt% vanadium addition. But over the range of 1.96 wt% vanadium hardness was decreased by coarse eutectic carbide. Thermal expansion coefficient of LTE cast steel containing 0.6 wt%carbon moderately increased with increasing vanadium contents. There was no significant variation of hardness and thermal expansion coefficient according to molybdenum content in LTE cast steel.

  • Due to air pollution, global warming and energy shortage demands new clean energy conversion technologies. The conversion of industrial waste heat into useful electricity using thermoelectric (TE) technology is a promising method in recent decades. Still, its applications are limited by the low efficiency of TE materials in the operating range between 400-600 K. In this work, we have fabricated Cu0.005Bi0.5Sb1.495Te3 powder using a single step gas atomization process followed by spark plasma sintering at different temperatures (623, 673, 723, and 773 K), and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. The variation of sintering temperature showed a significant impact on the grain size. The Seebeck coefficient values at room temperature increased significantly from 127 µVK to 151 µV/K with increasing sintering temperature from 623 K to 723 K due to decreased carrier concentration. The maximum Z T values for the four samples were similar in the range between 1.15 to 1.18 at 450 K, which suggest these materials could be used for power generation in the mid-temperature range (400-600 K).

  • Light Oil Flow Standard System(LOFSS) in Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS) was designed for oil flowmeter calibration. In order to extend the flow range from 120 $m^3/h$ to 200 $m^3/h$, the build-up technique was applied with two positive displacement flowmeters as master flowmeter. The master flowmeters were calibrated against with LOFSS, which has 0.04 % uncertainty of flow quantity determination, then the test flowmeter is calibrated against two master flowmeters. For uncertainty analysis, the repeatability of master flowmeters, the variation of the fluid density and the pipe volume due to temperature change were scrutinized. The contribution of each uncertainty factors to the calibrator and the correlation of each factors were discussed. For investigating the feasibility of uncertainty analysis, a turbine flowmeter as a transfer package was tested with LOFSS and two reference flowmeter. The hypothesis test for both results was coincide with a 95 % significant level. This means that the uncertainty analysis procedure of the calibrator is reasonable and the extension of flow range with master meters was carry out successfully.

  • In this paper, a circuit analysis of the complementary CMOS active pixel and readout circuit is carried out. Complementary pixel structure which is different from conventional 3TR APS structure is consist of photo diode, reset PMOS, several NMOSs and PMOSs sets for complementary signals. Photo diode is modelled with Medici device program. HSPICE was used to analyze the variation of the signal feature depending on light intensity using $0.5{\mu}M$ standard CMOS process. Simulation results show that the output signal range is from 0.8 V to 4.5 V. This signal range increased 135 % output dynamic range compared to conventional 3TR pixel in the condition of 5 V power supply.

  • This paper presents experimental observation of asymmetric electrohydrodynamic flow generated around a pair of symmetric coplanar electrodes. Electrodes are attached on the bottom of the cavity containing a dielectric liquid, i.e., a mixture of dodecane and 0.5% wt Span80. In the first experiment, an AC voltage of 1500 V is applied with the frequency varying in the range 10~500 hz and the left electrode being grounded. The flow patterns show that the center line of vortices is unexpectedly tilted to the left side. If the right side electrode is grounded, the center line is tilted to the right side. The magnitude of the fluid velocity shows an irregular variation with the frequency in the range 10 Hz~100 Hz, beyond which it simply decays. In the second experiment, we applied fixed AC with 1000 V and 60 Hz superposed by DC voltage varying in the range -1000 V ~ +1000 V. The center line of the flow pattern is tilted to the right side with positive DC voltage and to the left side with negative DC. We have managed to show that the flow pattern can be symmetric with a suitable combination of DC and AC, e.g., DC 850 V plus AC 1000 V with the frequency 10 Hz.
