Purpose: This paper systematically reviewed the effects of smoking cessation (SC) intervention among female smokers. Methods: A systematic search was performed targeting articles published on eight electronic databases, from January 1, 2010, to February 25, 2020. Nine studies were included in the systematic review. The risk of bias (RoB) tool was used to evaluate the quality of scientific evidence. Results: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was performed in all nine studies. Interventions were classified as exercise (n=4), cognitive behavioral counseling (n=2), motivational counseling (n=1), group counseling with self-help group (n=1), and pharmacotherapy (n=1). The SC rates were measured using a 7-days point prevalence abstinence in 55.6% of the studies. Exercise studies showed higher SC rates in the experimental groups than control groups after the intervention, but the differences were not significant. Other interventions were employed in two or fewer studies or did not conduct long-term follow-up, thus we were unable to examine effects of these interventions. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop SC programs for female smokers by carefully considering the characteristics of female smokers. Further research will be needed to confirm the effects of SC programs in certain subgroups among females. Also more experimental studies on SC intervention should be carried out with scientific rigor.
Purpose: This study was to analyze the trend of research on intervention for patients with metabolic syndrome. Method: Using Pubmed, Medline, and CINAHL search engines, a randomized controlled trial(RCT) researching titles such as 'metabolic syndrome', 'intervention', 'lifestyle modification', or 'community-based' were collected. A total of 16 researches were analyzed based on the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program - Adult Treatment Panel(NCEP-ATP III). Results: 1) The total period of the intervention was from 12 to 24 weeks, the frequency was 3 to 5 times per week, and the duration of each session was from 45 to 60 minutes. The types of intervention included exercise, diet, and medication. Among these types, diet was performed most frequently. 2) The outcomes of the intervention was measured with physical aspects such as anthropometric measures, body composition, or biological markers. No studies have evaluated psychosocial outcomes such as quality of life. 3) In terms of effectiveness of the intervention, anthropometric indicators, body composition, or serological markers showed positive effects, whereas results on endothelial or urine indicators were inconsistent. Conclusion: Methodological research developing comprehensive therapeutic lifestyle modification programs and intervention studies are needed for patients with metabolic syndrome. In addition, effects should be evaluated with multidimensional perspectives.
The purpose of this study is to review articles related to disaster training for nursing students and nurses by investigating the contents and effects of research. Electronic databases, including CINAHL, Pubmed and RISS were searched. Papers published only in English or Korean were included. Twelve studies were selected from the 3,588 references screened. Most training programs took less than 8 hours, focusing mostly on the response phase of disaster. Intervention methods included simulation, debriefing, action learning, role play, problem based learning and so on. It was found that disaster training programs have significant positive effects on disaster management competency, disaster knowledge, disaster nursing related self-confidence, and disaster response competency. It was also revealed that multidisciplinary practice would help learners enhance cooperation and collaboration with other team members and foster a positive professional identity. Among the selected articles, the randomized controlled trial(RCT) study was just one. Therefore, RCTs are further needed to verify the effects of such an disaster training. Also, further studies considering the characteristics of department and nursing interventions based on all phases of disaster are needed.

The purpose of this study was to review the herbal medications of asthma through clinical studies in Korea and to be utilized in the treatment of asthma and in other clinical studies. All clinical researches about asthma published up to 13th February 2018 were found in two domestic electric databases, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS) and National Discovery for Science Library(NDSL). Twenty-seven articles were selected and of these, there were 14 articles of before and after studies(BAS), 8 of case series(CS), 4 of case reports(CR) and 1 of the randomized controlled trial(RCT). The most frequently used prescription was "Cheongsangboha-tang(淸上補下湯)". There were various TCM patterns, and Tae-Eum-In(太陰人) was the most common Sasang constitution(四象體質). Frequently used evaluations to assess treatment effects were lung function tests such as Forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1) and Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adult Korean Asthmatics(QLQAKA) questionnaire responses. We have found that herbal medicine treatment can be an effective treatment to improve the symptoms and the quality of life of asthmatic patients. But we consider that large-scale systematically designed clinical researches are needed additionally.

The purpose of this study is to review the effect of previous research data with virtual reality-based Physical Activity Therapy Programs(PATPs) in adult on the physical fitness factors. Research articles were retrieved from 2008 to 2021 with the Research Information Sharing Service(RISS) and Pubmed database. The main search terms were 'care', 'therapy', 'healing', 'exercise' or 'physical activity', and 'virtual reality'. The criteria for selecting articles of this study were the originality, duplication, Randomized controlled trial(RCT) experiment and subject. Finally, 18 papers were selected among 318 articles, which were excluded if any of the criteria was not satisfied. Most of papers(15) were conducted in the last 5 years, because of the high interest due to the development of virtual reality implementation technology and COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were mainly patients(8), and the types of diseases were stroke(2). The physical fitness factors were mostly balance ability(7), muscle strength(7), and range of motion(6). All the physical fitness factors were significantly improved after PATPs. However, 11 studies were conducted for less than 4 weeks, including 6 studies were performed a bout of acute exercise. Also, 14 studies did not clearly present the intensity of PATPs. In addition, there were 9 studies, that simply applied games without specialized programs. In conclusion, it seems that virtual reality-based PATPs have a positive effect on physical fitness factors. However, VR-based PATPs should be specialized and developed in order to verify their effectiveness for the further research.

Purpose: The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of a proposed study "To investigate the effects of applying a vibration stimulation to the paretic and non-paretic sides on balance and gait in stroke patients" before proceeding with the main study. Methods: A total of 30 patients who had suffered a stroke and who met the selection criteria participated in this study. However, only 14 patients completed the study. The study subjects were randomly assigned to vibration stimulation on either both sides (B group) or the paralyzed side (P group). The interventions were applied for six weeks. The patients were assessed using the Berg balance scale (BBS), Timed up and go (TUG), 10-meter walk (10 MW), and 6-minute walk (6 MW) tests. Results: There was a significant difference before and after the application of vibration stimulation in the BBS, TUG, 10MW, and 6 MW tests in the B group (p<0.05). Similarly, there was also a significant difference observed in the 10 MW and 6 MW tests in the P group (p<0.05). The difference between the two groups was not significant in the BBS, TUG, 10 MW, and 6 MW tests (p>0.05). Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that it would be feasible to conduct a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) to examine the effects of applying a vibration stimulation to the paretic and non-paretic sides, on the balance and gait in stroke patients.

Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of virtual reality combined robot assist gait training (VRG) on improvement of balance and respiratory function in chronic stroke patients. Methods : A single-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with 35 chronic stroke patients. They were randomly allocated 2 groups; VRG group (n=18) and conservative treatment group (CG; n=17). The VRG group received 30 minutes robot assisted gait training combined virtual reality training, robot assisted gait training was conducted in parallel using a virtual reality device (2 sessions of 15 minutes in a 3D-recorded walking environment and 15 minutes in a downtown walking environment). In the conservative treatment group, neurodevelopmental therapy and exercise therapy were performed according to the function of stroke patients. Each group performed 30 minutes a day 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The primary outcome balance and respiratory function were measured by a balance measurement system (BioRescue, Marseille, France), Berg balance scale, functional reach test for balance, Spirometry (Cosmed Micro Quark, Cosmed, Italy) for respiratory function Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and maximum expiratory volume (PEF) were measured according to the protocol. The measurement were performed before and after the 8 weeks intervention period. Results : Both groups demonstrated significant improvement of outcome in balance and respiratory function during intervention period. VRG revealed significant differences in balance and respiratory function as compared to the CG groups (p<.05). Our results showed that VRG was more effective on balance and respiratory function in patients with chronic stroke. Conclusion : Our findings indicate that VRG can improve balance and respiratory function, highlight the benefits of VRG. This study will be able to be used as an intervention data for recovering balance and respiratory function in chronic stroke patients.
Background: The compression therapy, which is the standard treatment for lymphedema patients, may be difficult to implement and contraindicated to some patients depending on their health condition. Objects: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether kinesiology taping (KT) can be used effectively and safely in the management of lymphedema as an alternative treatment through systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: In February 2023, the literature was systematically collected through eight search engines with a combination of terms, 'lymphedema' and 'kinesiology taping.' We qualitatively analyzed the differences and safety of KT methods, and quantitatively meta-analyzed the effects of volume reduction in edema, range of motion (ROM), and pain improvement using Review Manager ver. 5. 4. To assess the risk of bias in the randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies, Risk of Bias was used. Results: A total of 616 articles searched and 20 studies were selected, including 12 RCTs and eight case studies. KT intervention could not replace multilayer compression bandage (MLB), but it demonstrated similar or better results compared to compression garment (CG), with reduced pain and improved intervention comfort. Studies reported skin adverse events ranging from 2.5% to 20.68%, with a total adverse event incidence of 7.7%. There was no significant difference in the application method of KT. As a result of the meta-analysis from the 8 RCTs, the KT intervention showed a mean difference (MD) of -7.18 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) [-12.64 to -1.72] in the volume change of lymphedema, while the pain difference was MD 0.82 with CI 95% [0.50 to 1.15], in comparison to the MLB and CG intervention. Conclusion: KT therapy led to a reduction in edema size, volume, pain, and improved ROM and quality of life. KT may be a viable option for lymphedema patients who have trouble applying traditional compression therapies.
