  • The purpose of this study is to develop an automatic algorithm for vessel segmentation in X-Ray angiogram using Random Forest (RF). The proposed algorithm is composed of the following steps: First, the multiscale hessian-based filtering is performed in order to enhance the vessel structure. Second, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of hessian matrix are used to learn the RF classifier as feature vectors. Finally, we can get the result through the trained RF. We evaluated the similarity between the result of proposed algorithm and the manual segmentation using 349 frames, and compared with the results of the following two methods: Frangi et al. and Krissian et al. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm showed high similarity compared to other two methods.

  • A vision-based 3D tracking of articulated human hand is one of the major issues in the applications of human computer interactions and understanding the control of robot hand. This paper presents an improved approach for tracking and recovering the 3D position and orientation of a human hand using the Kinect sensor. The basic idea of the proposed method is to solve an optimization problem that minimizes the discrepancy in 3D shape between an actual hand observed by Kinect and a hypothesized 3D hand model. Since each of the 3D hand pose has 23 degrees of freedom, the hand articulation tracking needs computational excessive burden in minimizing the 3D shape discrepancy between an observed hand and a 3D hand model. For this, we first created a 3D hand model which represents the hand with 17 different parts. Secondly, Random Forest classifier was trained on the synthetic depth images generated by animating the developed 3D hand model, which was then used for Haar-like feature-based classification rather than performing per-pixel classification. Classification results were used for estimating the joint positions for the hand skeleton. Through the experiment, we were able to prove that the proposed method showed improvement rates in hand part recognition and a performance of 20-30 fps. The results confirmed its practical use in classifying hand area and successfully tracked and recovered the 3D hand pose in a real time fashion.

  • Crop type classification is essential for supporting agricultural decisions and resource monitoring. Remote sensing techniques, especially using hyperspectral imagery, have been effective in agricultural applications. Hyperspectral imagery acquires contiguous and narrow spectral bands in a wide range. However, large dimensionality results in unreliable estimates of classifiers and high computational burdens. Therefore, reducing the dimensionality of hyperspectral imagery is necessary. In this study, the Random Forest (RF) classifier was utilized for dimensionality reduction as well as classification purpose. RF is an ensemble-learning algorithm created based on the Classification and Regression Tree (CART), which has gained attention due to its high classification accuracy and fast processing speed. The RF performance for crop classification with airborne hyperspectral imagery was assessed. The study area was the cultivated area in Chogye-myeon, Habcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, where the main crops are garlic, onion, and wheat. Parameter optimization was conducted to maximize the classification accuracy. Then, the dimensionality reduction was conducted based on RF variable importance. The result shows that using the selected bands presents an excellent classification accuracy without using whole datasets. Moreover, a majority of selected bands are concentrated on visible (VIS) region, especially region related to chlorophyll content. Therefore, it can be inferred that the phenological status after the mature stage influences red-edge spectral reflectance.

  • Tower insulators in electric power transmission network play a crucial role in preserving the reliability of the system. Electrical utilities frequently face the problem of flashover of insulators due to pollution deposition on their surface. Several research works based on leakage current (LC) measurement has been already carried out in developing diagnostic techniques for these insulators. Since the LC signal is highly intermittent in nature, estimation of pollution severity based on LC signal measurement over a short period of time will not produce accurate results. Reports on the measurement and analysis of LC signals over a long period of time is scanty. This paper attempts to use Random Forest (RF) classifier, which produces accurate results on large data bases, to analyze the pollution severity of high voltage tower insulators. Leakage current characteristics over a long period of time were measured in the laboratory on porcelain insulator. Pollution experiments were conducted at 11 kV AC voltage. Time domain analysis and wavelet transform technique were used to extract both basic features and histogram features of the LC signal. RF model was trained and tested with a variety of LC signals measured over a lengthy period of time and it is noticed that the proposed RF model based pollution severity classifier is efficient and will be helpful to electrical utilities for real time implementation.

  • The development of various phishing websites enables hackers to access confidential personal or financial data, thus, decreasing the trust in e-business. This paper compared the detection techniques utilizing URL-based features. To analyze and compare the performance of supervised machine learning classifiers, the machine learning classifiers were trained by using more than 11,005 phishing and legitimate URLs. 30 features were extracted from the URLs to detect a phishing or legitimate URL. Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and CatBoost classifiers were then analyzed and their performances were evaluated. The results yielded that CatBoost was much better classifier than Random Forest and Logistic Regression with up to 96% of detection accuracy.

  • In this study, the prediction method was reviewed to process a cylindrical plate forming using machine learning as a data-driven approach by roll bending equipment. The calculation of the forming variables was based on the analysis using the mechanical relationship between the material properties and the roll bending machine in the bending process. Then, by applying the finite element analysis method, the accuracy of the deformation prediction model was reviewed, and a large number data set was created to apply to machine learning using the finite element analysis model for deformation prediction. As a result of the application of the machine learning model, it was confirmed that the calculation is slightly higher than the linear regression method. Applicable results were confirmed through the machine learning method.
