Nonlinear Kalman filter bias correction for wind ramp event forecasts at wind turbine height

  • One of the growing concerns of the wind energy production is wind ramp events. To improve the wind ramp event forecasts, the nonlinear Kalman filter bias correction method was applied to 24-h wind speed forecasts issued from the WRF model at 70-m height in Zhangbei wind farm, Hebei Province, China for a two-year period. The Kalman filter shows the remarkable ability of improving forecast skill for real-time wind speed forecasts by decreasing RMSE by 32% from 3.26 m s-1 to 2.21 m s-1, reducing BIAS almost to zero, and improving correlation from 0.58 to 0.82. The bias correction improves the forecast skill especially in wind speed intervals sensitive to wind power prediction. The fact shows that the Kalman filter is especially suitable for wind power prediction. Moreover, the bias correction method performs well under abrupt weather transition. As to the overall performance for improving the forecast skill of ramp events, the Kalman filter shows noticeable improvements based on POD and TSS. The bias correction increases the POD score of up-ramps from 0.27 to 0.39 and from 0.26 to 0.38 for down-ramps. After bias correction, the TSS score is significantly promoted from 0.12 to 0.26 for up-ramps and from 0.13 to 0.25 for down-ramps.

  • Difference in the structure of AC PDP cells makes the cells have various discharge characteristics. Therefore, a ramp-reset must be adjusted for the stable driving of AC PDP. If any ramp-reset can reduce the difference in discharge characteristics between cells, the conditions of the address discharge could become almost the same. It is very important to understand these to design a good driving waveform. In this paper, we proved the mentioned facts with the change of barrier rib heights.

  • Nowadays, most small form-factor drives adapt a load/unload mechanism and the flying height of the head becomes more and more low. So, the load/unload velocity also becomes one of the important factors to ensure the reliability of the load/unload operation. To control the load/unload velocity accurately, velocity sensing is most important because there is no special velocity sensor during the load/unload operation. In this paper, we proposed a very practical method that measures the velocity from the BEMF voltage of a VCM. Then, the proposed method is applied to the load/unload velocity control using 2.5' drives in order to verify its usefulness.

  • 핵연료봉의 PCI 파손은 원자로의 운전제한과 밀접한 관계가 있기 때문에, 출력급증 조건에서 핵연료봉의 PCI 파손을 지배하는 파손인자들의 거동을 검토하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 피복관에서의 원주방향 응력, 원주방향 변형도, 원주방향 주름 높이, 크립 변형율 및 변형도 에너지등의 파손인자들에 대한 거동특성을 핵연료봉 성능해석용 전산코드인 FEMAXI-IV를 이용하여 출력급증량 및 출력증가율의 운전인자들의 함수로 검토하였다.

  • A load/unload mechanism is applied to most small form factor hard disk drives. Loading velocity is ones of the most important factors to ensure the reliability of the load/unload operations. Especially, the lower the flying height of the head becomes, the more important the accuracy of the loading velocity control becomes. Because there is no sensor during the load/unload operations, BEMF voltage is used to sense the head velocity. To measure BEMF voltage, a simple circuit is added to the load/unload HDD control system. Overall acceptable results are obtained by using the simple PI controller but the errors from the target velocity occur when the head moves along the ramp and then reaches the disk. Feedforward profile and disturbance observer are used to remove those errors effectively.

Effects of Different Shoe Heel Heights on the Kinematic Variables of the Lower Extremities during Walking on Slopes by healthy adult women

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the changes in the kinematic variables during walking on a downhill ramp according to the shoe heel height. METHODS: The subjects were 10 adult women with no history of musculoskeletal disorders who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using a motion analysis system (VICON) consisting of six infrared cameras. The slope was 120 cm in width, 200 cm in length, and 15 in inclination. To confirm the change in gait parameters (stride length, gait speed) and lower extremity joint angle according to the heel heights of the shoes, flat, 5 cm, and 10 cm heel shoes were prepared and walked alternately. RESULTS: As a result, both the stride length and walking speed showed significant differences according to the heel height between flat and 10 cm (p<.05). In the sagittal plane, there was no significant difference in the hip joint and knee joint, but a significant difference was observed in all events in the ankle joint on all heel heights (p<.05). In particular, the heel strike and mid stance events showed significant differences among all height conditions (p<.05). No significant difference was observed in any of the joint angle changes in the frontal plane (p>.05). CONCLUSION: As the shoe heel height increased, the instability increased and efforts to secure the stability were made, leading to a shortened stride length, walking speed, and angle of the ankle joint.

레이저 스캐너의 틸트 각도 조절을 통한 다양한 환경에서의 연석 탐지 및 추종 (Curb Detection and Following in Various Environments by Adjusting Tilt Angle of a Laser Scanner)

  • When a robot navigates in an outdoor environment, a curb or a sidewalk separated from the road can be used as a robust feature. However, most algorithms could detect the curb only in the straight road, and could not detect highly curved corners, ramps, and so on. This paper proposes an algorithm which enables the robot to detect and follow the curbs in various types of roads. In the proposed method, the robot tilts a laser scanner and computes the error between the predicted and the measured distances to the road in front of the robot. Based on this error, the curbs at corners and curves can be classified. It is also difficult to detect a curb near a ramp because of its low height. In this case, the robot also tilts a laser scanner to detect the curb beyond the ramp. Once the robot classifies the road into the curve, corner, ramp, the robot selects the proper navigation strategies depending on the classified road types and is able to continue to detect and follow the curb. The results of a series of experiments show that the robot can stably detect and follows the curb in curves, corners and ramps as well as the straight road.

  • Reactive or unstable adsorbates are often difficult to study spectroscopically. They may have, for instance, resonance states lying close to the Fermi level, inducing them to desorb or decompose by the probe itself, low-energy tunneling electrons. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed a novel method, which we call x-ramp scan. The method sweeps the bias voltage, with the simutaneous scan along the imaging direction, in a constant current mode. This mapping yields the tip-height variation as a function of bias, or Z(V), at nominally always fresh surface. We applied this method to the investigation of methanol-induced molecular features, attributed to methoxy, found on NiAl(110) surface. These were produced by methanol molecules deposited by a pulse injection method onto the metallic surface. Our study shows adsorbed methoxy are very reactive to the bias voltage, rendering the standard spectroscopy useless. Our new x-ramp scan shows that the decomposition of adsorbates occurs at the sample bias of 3.63 V, and proceeds with the lifetime of a few milliseconds.   • Since most of small form-factor drives have a load/unload mechanism and the flying height of the head is getting lower as the capacity of disk drives increases, the load/unload velocity becomes one of the important factors to ensure the reliability of the load/unload mechanism. To control the load/unload velocity accurately, velocity sensing is essential. In this paper, we introduce a very practical method that acquires the load/unload velocity from the back electromotive force (BEMF) of a voice coil motor (VCM) and propose a calibration method for measuring the BEMF from a given circuit. Moreover, the effect of calibration error and temperature variation on the measurement of BEMF is shown by simulation. Then, this present method is applied to the load/unload velocity controller and is verified from the experimental result.

  • 월파된 파도를 이용한 파력발전시스템을 월파수류형 파력발전기 OWEC(Overtopping Wave Energy Converter)라고 한다. OWEC의 성능은 발전 시스템은 특성상 파도의 파고와 주기의 영향을 받는다. 파도는 해양에 따라 파고, 주기, 파도 방향 등의 특성이 다르고 이러한 파도의 다양한 특성 때문에 OWEC는 안정적인 전력을 생산하기 어렵다. 따라서 각 바다의 특성에 따른 OWEC의 적절한 형상에 관한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) 입자법을 사용하여 OWEC의 램프 설계가 hydraulic efficiency에 미치는 영향을 확인했다. 총 10개의 모델을 설계하였으며, 선택된 매개변수에 따라 램프의 설계 파라미터를 선택하고 사면의 형상을 변경하여 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 해석 결과로부터 구한 유량을 기초로 hydraulic efficiency를 산출하였다. 계산된 hydraulic efficiency를 바탕으로 각 변수가 사면의 형상에 따른 월파 성능에 미치는 영향을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 특정 해역에 따른 OWEC 램프의 적절한 형상에 대한 방향을 제시하였다.
