  • We have determined the urea concentration in an aqueous solution using Raman spectroscopy by incorporating a Teflon tube as an effective intensity correction standard as well as sample container. A non-overlapping Teflon band was used as the reference peak to correct Raman intensity variations that occasionally resulted from changes in laser power. To increase the sensitivity, we positioned a copper reflector inside the Teflon tube to maximize the collection of Raman scattering. The obtained accuracy using Raman spectroscopy was 0.53 mM, close to the range of accuracy of previous NIR studies (0.15-0.52 mM).

  • Purpose: The objective of this research was to select high quality cucumber (cucumis sativus) seed by classifying into viable or non-viable one using Raman spectroscopy. Method: Both transmission and back-scattering Raman spectra of viable and non-viable seeds in the range from $150cm^{-1}$ to $1890cm^{-1}$ were collected with a laser illumination. Results: The Raman spectra of cucumber seed showed Raman peaks with features of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to predict viable seeds was developed with measured transmission and backscattering spectra with Raman spectroscopy and germination test results. Various types of spectra pretreatment were investigated to develop the classification models. The results of developed PLS-DA models using the transmission spectra with mean normalization or range normalization, and back-scattering spectra with mean normalization treatment or baseline correction showed 100% discrimination accuracy. Conclusions: These results showed that Raman spectroscopy technologies can be used to select the high quality cucumber seeds.

  • Phase stability diagram and boundary of a- and c-axis orientation of $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (SmBCO) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) were reported with studies based on x-ray diffraction [1]. Four different samples are systematically analyzed: normal c-axis oriented orthorhombic $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$, a-axis oriented $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$, c-axis oriented orthorhombic $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ with $Sm_2BaCuO_5$ phase, and a mixture with c-axis oriented orthorhombic $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ and anomalously long-c tetragonal $SmBa_2Cu_3O_x$. Raman scattering spectroscopy equipped with polarization analysis elucidates the crystal orientation and the origin of the growth of the materials. It indicates that the technique can be used for quality control of conductor manufacturing processes as well as for enhancement of the materials properties.

  • Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS) spectroscopy was employed to analyze the genotoxic nucleobase adducts of benzo[a]pyrene(BP) formed through one-electron oxidation pathway. SERS spectroscopy provided sufficient resolution to distinguish if BP intermediate was bound to different nucleobases(e. g. adenine or guanine). Furthermore, SERS specroscopy was also able to detect the difference in the binding position of the adduct to the various sites of the nucleobase. The linearity of the calibration curve for N7Ade-BP ranged from 20 picogram to 800 nanogram per microliter and the detection limit under the current conditions was determined 20 picogram per microliter in a solution volume of 20 microliter.

  • We investigated the interaction between polyynes (linear carbon chains) and various metal nanoparticles (Ag, Au, and Cu) to provide insight into the optical properties of metal-polyynes systems prepared by different experimental techniques. Polyynes were produced by laser ablation in deionized water, metal nanoparticles solutions, and copper chloride solution. Metal nanoparticles complexes with polyynes were analyzed by Raman, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy.

  • DLC(Diamond-Like-Carbon) thin film, one of the solid state amorphous carbon films, has been deposited by the method of PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition). The structural features have been characterized using both FT-IR Spectroscopy and Raman Scattering. The film is considered to consist of microcrystalline diamond domains and graphitelike carbon domains, which are interconnected by hydrogenated $sp^3$ tetrahedral carbons. This shows a good agreement with the results by I-Vmeasurements. In I-Vstudy, the sudden increase of current has been observed and this phenomenon is understood to be due to the tunneling effect between graphitelike domains. A characteristic feature related to the $\beta$-SiC has been identified in the study of Raman Scattering for the very thin film, which suggests that a buffer layer forms at the interface of the Si substrate and the carbon film.

  • Purpose: This study examined the performance of two spectroscopy methods and multivariate classification methods to discriminate viable pepper seeds from their non-viable counterparts. Methods: A classification model for viable seeds was developed using partial least square discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) with Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) and Raman spectroscopic data in the range of $9080-4150cm^{-1}$ (1400-2400 nm) and $1800-970cm^{-1}$, respectively. The datasets were divided into 70% to calibration and 30% to validation. To reduce noise from the spectra and compare the classification results, preprocessing methods, such as mean, maximum, and range normalization, multivariate scattering correction, standard normal variate, and $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ derivatives with the Savitzky-Golay algorithm were used. Results: The classification accuracies for calibration using FT-NIR and Raman spectroscopy were both 99% with first derivative, whereas the validation accuracies were 90.5% with both multivariate scattering correction and standard normal variate, and 96.4% with the raw data (non-preprocessed data). Conclusions: These results indicate that FT-NIR and Raman spectroscopy are valuable tools for a feasible classification and evaluation of viable pepper seeds by providing useful information based on PLS-DA and the threshold value.

  • InAs nanowires were synthesized by a vapor-liquid-solid method with InAs powder. The composition and crystalline structure of nanowires were confirmed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), respectively. The thermal conduction of nanowires was investigated by the optical method using Raman spectroscopy: i.e., the local temperature on nanowire was determined by laser heating. As temperature increased, the Raman peaks are shifted to low frequency and broadened. The temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments was realized on InAs nanowires with different percentages of zinc-blende and wurtzite structure. The temperature dependence on the nanowire structure has been successfully obtained: the phonon scattering was more increased in InAs heretostructure nanowires, compared to the InAs nanowires with homostructure. The result strongly suggests that the thermal conduction can be effectively controlled by ordered interface without any decrease in electrical conduction.

  • Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) which a plasma is irradiated at a specific wavelength depending on the material when a high-energy laser is irradiated, and a Raman spectroscopy which measures rotation and vibration in molecules as light-scattering phenomenon occurs, are attracting attention as a space exploration technology because of the advantages of high accuracy and real-time analysis, and the ability to perform long-range detection. In this study, the tendency of the laser spectrum according to the change of the soil component was analyzed by laser spectroscopy and the two - dimensional chemical distribution was conducted based on the trend of laser spectrum. We have also established the environment of Mars (4-7 torr) and lunar atmosphere (<1 torr) in experimental setup, to prove that it is possible to measure by difference of soil chemical composition using LIBS and Raman spectroscopy even in artificial space environment.

  • We carried out the tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) with a tip that is functionalized with a Aunanoparticle (AuNP, with a diameter of 250 nm). The AuNP tip is fabricated by a direct mechanical pickup of a AuNP from a flat substrate, and the TERS signal from the AuNP tip - organic monolayer - Au thin film (thickness of 10 nm) is recorded. We find that such a AuNP-tip interacting with a thin film routinely yields signal enhancement larger than ${\sim}10^4$, which is sufficient not only for local (with detection area of ~200 $nm^2$) Raman spectroscopy, but also the nanometric imaging of organic monolayers within a reasonable acquisition time (~20 minutes/image).
