  • Windows are widely used for natural ventilation of the various buildings. Especially high level windows as a part of industrial ventilation systems, play a crucial role in natural ventilation. Compared to mechanical ventilation system, natural ventilation has the advantage of lower installation and operating costs. In general, high level windows for industrial buildings have three types; louver type, 45$^{\circ}$ open type and 90$^{\circ}$ open type. Based on previous studies, it was found that the louver type and 45$^{\circ}$ open type are very effective in reducing rainwater penetration, but they did not have enough ventilation efficiencies. Preliminary tests were performed with the various types of windows. It was found that a 90$^{\circ}$ open double layer type window was the best among those which tested in our preliminary tests. Simulated rain was used to estimate the amount of rain penetrated through windows and to observe the paths of rain penetration. Various 90$^{\circ}$ open windows were tested to find the windows with minimum rain penetration and maximum ventilation efficiency.

  • The aim of this study is to determine and propose the by-pass rainwater sewer system in order to reduce the urban floodplain from the locality heavy rain every year during the dry season and the sinkholes in the city as well as the shortage of groundwaters due to extreme hot weather condition and urban heat island phenomenon. Heavy rain occurs more than the years of heavy rainfall probability, comparison between the place where uses the existing pipes and connect the sewer system with by-pass rain permeability and without expanding sewer pipe replacement at intersection of Gangnam station 3.07 ha at Gangnam-gu, Seoul Metropolitan area, it indicates that average of 27 million KRW (44%) maintenance cost savings and maintain existing sewer system without any other countermeasures. For the city flooded reduction, by-pass rainwater permeable rainwater pipe multiplying the probability the number of years during summer season and increase the water flow capacity during spring and fall when a small amount of rain that, it also contribute to the total amount of underground water secured through the by-pass penetration.

  • Purpose: This study has developed economical and environmentally friendly storage type infiltration facilities that securing storage space inside the infiltration facility. It focused on preventing flooding rainfall as well as securing more groundwater through rainwater infiltration that is valuable for the dry season. In addition, this study compares the installation cost of the storage-type infiltration facility to the cost of the conventional rainwater management facilities to demonstrate the economic efficiency of the storage-based infiltration facility. Method: Unit infiltration of this facility is calculated and when it was applied to a certain capacity, the amount of countermeasures are proposed in case study. Result: Unit infiltration of it is $0.2541m^3/hr$ and un it Temporary storage of it is $1.054m^3/m$. As a result, the infiltration effect of this facility is $1.306m^3/hr$. The cost was approximately 30% reduction in time to apply the storage type infiltration facility as compared with the case to apply the existing penetration of the facilities. Since the penetration of the existing facilities is smaller than that and it has much securing volume to process the same the amount of countermeasures. Therefore, it is determined that the cost significantly increases in material cost part. On the other hand, storage type infiltration facility is installed a small quantity because Unit Temporary storage and infiltration are bigger than that. So, it occurred to reduce material and installation costs.

  • Sewage facilities are positively necessary for environment improvement such as rainwater removal, sewage disposal, preservation of the quality of water and health of the citizens in present-day. Meanwhile, a deterioration of the concrete sewer pipe is increasing rapidly due to the chemical and physical attack and especially biochemical attack that is to say biodeterioration. So, in advanced countries, prediction techniques and corrosion inhibition system for sewer concrete are developed and are being applied. Also, antibiotics were developed already but application of that is low because it is not economical and has no practical use. But, in domestic, countermeasures for the corrosion of sewage concrete are not sufficient and biochemical attack is not reflected in those essentially. In this study, to prevent biochemical corrosion of the sewer concrete, surface of the concrete was spread with liquefied inorganic antibiotics and then its engineering properties were experimentally investigated. As a result, compressive strength of the specimen spread with antibiotics were similar to those of non spread, Both bond strength and abrasion amount of the specimen spread with antibiotics were inferior to non spread. Properties of absorption and air permeability of the specimen spread with antibiotics were superior to non spread. Finally, carbonation depth, chloride ion penetration depth and weight change ration of the specimen spread with antibiotics were smaller than non spread.

  • To prevent penetration of rainwater into the landfill site is the main purpose of the final cover in landfill sites. Conventional designs of landfill covers uses geotextiles such as geomembrane and GCL, and clay liners to lower the permeability of final covers of landfill sites. However, differential settlement and the variation of temperature in landfill sites cause the development of cracks or structural damage inside the final cover and it is also difficult to obtain clay - the main material of the compacted clay liner in Korea. Thus the former final cover system that suggests geomembrane and GCL or compacted clay liner has several limitations. Therefore, an alternative method is necessary and one of them is the application of SRSL(self-Recovering Sustainable Liner) material. SRSL is two different layers consist of individual materials that react with each other and form precipitates, and with this process lowers the permeability of the landfill final cover. SRSL generally is made up of two layers, so that when a internal crack occurs the reactants of the two layers migrate towards the crack and heal it by forming another liner. In this study the applicability of SRSL material for landfill final cover was examined by performing; (1) jar test to verify the formation of precipitate in the mixture of each reactants, (2) falling head test considering the field stress in order to confirm the decrease of permeability or prove that the hydraulic condctivity is lower than the regulations, (3) compression tests to judge weather if the strength satisfies the restricts for landfills, (4) freeze/thaw test to check the applicability of SRSL for domestic climate. In addition, the application of waste materials in the environmental and economical aspect was inspected, and finally the possibility of secondary contamination due to the waste materials was examined by performing elution tests.

  • Ballasted track on an asphalt roadbed can be beneficial for its various effects such as (i) decreasing of roadbed thickness by dispersing train load; (ii) prevention of both strength reduction and weakening in roadbed system by preventing rainwater penetration; and (iii) reducing maintenance cost by preventing roadbed mud-pumping and frostbite. With these beneficial effects, ballasted track on asphalt roadbed has been widely used in Europe and Japan, and relevant research for applying such ballasted track on asphalt roadbed systems in Korea is ongoing. In this study, full-scale static and dynamic train load tests were performed to compare the performance of ballasted track on asphalt roadbed and ballasted track. The optimum thickness levels of asphalt and reinforced roadbeds, corresponding to the design criteria for reinforced roadbed of high-speed railway, was estimated using the FEM program ABAQUS. Test results show that the earth pressure on reinforced roadbed of ballasted track on the asphalt roadbed was relatively low compared with that of simple ballasted track. The elastic and plastic displacements of simple ballasted track on the asphalt roadbed were also lower than those of ballasted track. These test results may indicate that the use of ballasted track on asphalt roadbed is an advantageous system in view of long-term maintenance.

  • The LID technique began to be applied in Korea after 2009, and LID facilities are installed and operated for rainwater management in business districts such as the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and LH Corporation, public institutions, commercial land, housing, parks, and schools. However, looking at domestic cases, the application cases and operation periods are insufficient compared to those outside the country, so appropriate design standards and measures for operation and maintenance are insufficient. In particular, LID facilities constructed using LID techniques need to maintain the environment inside LID facilities because hydrological and environmental effects are expressed by material circulation and energy flow. The LID facility is designed with the treatment capacity planned for the water circulation target, and the proper maintenance, vegetation, and soil conditions are periodically identified, and the efficiency is maintained as much as possible. In other words, the soil created in LID is a very important design element because LID facilities are expected to have effects such as water pollution reduction, flood reduction, water resource acquisition, and temperature reduction while increasing water storage and penetration capacity through water circulation construction. In order to maintain and manage the functions of LID facilities accurately, the current state of the facilities and the cycle of replacement and maintenance should be accurately known through various quantitative data such as soil contamination, snow removal effects, and vegetation criteria. This study was conducted to investigate the current status of LID facilities installed in Korea from 2009 to 2020, and analyze soil changes through the continuity and current status of LID facilities applied over the past 10 years after collecting soil samples from the soil layer. Through analysis of Saturn, organic matter, hardness, water contents, pH, electrical conductivity, and salt, some vegetation-type LID facilities more than 5 to 7 years after construction showed results corresponding to the lower grade of landscape design. Facilities below the lower level can be recognized as a point of time when maintenance is necessary in a state that may cause problems in soil permeability and vegetation growth. Accordingly, it was found that LID facilities should be managed through soil replacement and replacement.
