Recently, increasing heavy rainfalls due to climate change and/or variability result in hydro-climatic disasters being accelerated. To cope with the extreme rainfall events in the future, hydrologic frequency analysis is usually used to estimate design rainfalls in a design target year. The rainfall data series applied to the hydrologic frequency analysis is assumed to be stationary. However, recent observations indicate that the data series might not preserve the statistical properties of rainfall in the future. This study incorporated the residual analysis and the hydrologic frequency analysis to estimate design rainfalls in a design target year considering the non-stationarity of rainfall. The residual time series were generated using a linear regression line constructed from the observations. After finding the proper probability density function for the residuals, considering the increasing or decreasing trend, rainfalls quantiles were estimated corresponding to specific design return periods in a design target year. The results from applying the method to 14 gauging stations indicate that the proposed method provides appropriate design rainfalls and reduces the prediction errors compared with the conventional rainfall frequency analysis which assumes that the rainfall data are stationary.

This study was conducted to derive the regional design rainfall by the regional frequency analysis based on the regionalization of the precipitation. Using the L-moment ratios and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the underlying regional probability distribution was identified to be the Generalized extreme value distribution among apt]lied distributions. regional and at-site parameters of the Generalized extreme value distribution were estimated by the method of L-moment. The regional and at-site analysis for the design rainfall were tested by Monte Carlo simulation. Relative root-mean-square error(RRMSE), relative bias(RBIAS) and relative reduction(RR) in RRMSE were computed and compared with those resulting from at-site Monte Carlo simulation. All show that the regional analysis procedure can substantially reduce the RRMSE, RBIAS and RR in RRMSE in the prediction of design rainfall. Consequently, optimal design rainfalls following the regions and consecutive durations were derived by the regional frequency analysis.

This study was conducted to derive the regional design rainfall by the regional frequency analysis based on the regionalization of the precipitation suggested by the first report of this project. Using the L-moment ratios and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the underlying regional probability distribution was identified to be the Generalized extreme value distribution among applied distributions. Regional and at-site parameters of the generalized extreme value distribution were estimated by the linear combination of the probability weighted moments, L-moment. Consequently, optimal design rainfalls following the legions and consecutive durations were derived by the regional frequency analysis.

Recently frequent occurrences of heavy rainfall and increases of rainfall intensity resulted in severe flood damage in Korea. In order to mitigate the vulnerability of flood, it is necessary to estimate proper design rainfalls considering the increasing trend of extreme rainfalls for hydrologic planning and design. This study focused the estimation of design rainfalls in a design target year. Tests of trend indicated that there are 7 sites showing increasing trends among 56 sites which have hourly data more than 30 years in Korea. This study analyzed the relationship between mean of annual maximum rainfalls and parameters of the Gumbel distribution. Based on the relationship, this study estimated the probability density function and design rainfalls in a design target year, and then constructed the rainfall-frequency curve. The proposed method estimated the design rainfalls 6-20% higher than those from the stationary rainfall frequency analysis.

This research seeks to derive the design rainfalls through the L-moment with the test of homogeneity, independence and outlier of data on annual maximum daily rainfall in 38 Korean rainfall stations. To select the fit appropriate distribution of annual maximum daily rainfall data according to rainfall stations, applied were Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO) and Generalized Pareto (GPA) probability distributions were applied. and their aptness was judged Dusing an L-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test, the aptitude was judged of applied distributions such as GEV, GLO and GPA. The GEV and GLO distributions were selected as the appropriate distributions. Their parameters were estimated Targetingfrom the observed and simulated annual maximum daily rainfalls and using Monte Carlo techniques, the parameters of GEV and GLO selected as suitable distributions were estimated and. dDesign rainfallss were then derived, using the L-moment. Appropriate design rainfalls were suggested by doing a comparative analysis of design rainfall from the GEV and GLO distributions according to rainfall stations.

When a weapon system is developed, climate elements such as temperature, rainfall, and so on have an effect on development costs and a developing period. Therefore, effects of environment and climate must be examined throughly before the design of weapon systems and be applied to their developments. And so, operational and storage requirements for weapon systems are determined and are applied to related tests through analyzing not only environmental factors such as vibration, shock, and so on, but also climate factors. In this paper, the distribution and the frequency of occurrence of rainfall were analyzed and were suggested as a good guide to determine standards of tests for weapon systems when it's raining.

Due to the lack of flood data, the water engineering practice calculates the design flood using rainfall frequency analysis and rainfall-runoff model. However, the rainfall frequency analysis for arbitrary duration does not reflect the regional characteristics of the duration and amount of storm event. This study proposed a practical method to calculate the design flood in a watershed considering the characteristics of storm event, based on the bivariate rainfall frequency analysis. After extracting independent storm events for the Pyeongchang River basin and the upper Namhangang River basin, we performed the bivariate rainfall frequency analysis to determine the design storm events of various return periods, and calculated the design floods using the HEC-1 model. We compared the design floods based on the bivariate rainfall frequency analysis (DF_BRFA) with those estimated by the flood frequency analysis (DF_FFA), and those estimated by the HEC-1 with the univariate rainfall frequency analysis (DF_URFA). In the case of the Pyeongchang River basin, except for the 100-year flood, the average error of the DF_BRFA was 11.6%, which was the closest to the DF_FFA. In the case of the Namhangang River basin, the average error of the DF_BRFA was about 10%, which was the most similar to the DF_FFA. As the return period increased, the DF_URFA was calculated to be much larger than the DF_FFA, whereas the BRFA produced smaller average error in the design flood than the URFA. When the proposed method is used to calculate design flood in an ungauged watershed, it is expected that the estimated design flood might be close to the actual DF_FFA. Thus, the design of the hydrological structures and water resource plans can be carried out economically and reasonably.

This research seeks to derive the design rainfalls through the L-moment with the test of homogeneity, independence and outlier of data on annual maximum daily rainfall at 38 rainfall stations in Korea. To select the appropriate distribution of annual maximum daily rainfall data by the rainfall stations, Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO), Generalized Pareto (GPA), Generalized Normal (GNO) and Pearson Type 3 (PT3) probability distributions were applied and their aptness were judged using an L-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Parameters of appropriate distributions were estimated from the observed and simulated annual maximum daily rainfall using Monte Carlo techniques. Design rainfalls were finally derived by GEV distribution, which was proved to be more appropriate than the other distributions.

The objective of this study is to check into variation trends of design rainfall according to change of the number of years for observed data. To make comparative study of the relation between design rainfall and recorded year, this study was used maximum rainfall for 24-hr consecutive duration at Gangneung, Seoul, Incheon, Chupungnyeong, Pohang, Daegu, Jeonju, Ulsan, Gwangju, Busan, Mokpo and Yeosu rainfall stations. The tests for Independence, Homogeneity and detection of outliers were used Wald-Wolfowitz's test, Mann-Whitney's test and Grubbs and Beck test respectively. To select appopriate distribution, the distribution of genaralized pareto(GPA), generalized extreme value(GEV), generalized logistic(GLO), lognormal and pearson type 3 distribution is judged by L-moment ratio diagram and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Design rainfall was estimated by at-site frequency analysis using L-moments and Generalized extreme value(GEV) distribution according to change of the number of years for observed data. Through the comparative analysis for design rainfall induced by L-moments and GEV distribution, relationship between design rainfall and recorded year is provided.
In this study, we investigated the application of extending the Huff's method to design discharge being used at present up to the event of concentrated rainfall. As our field study site, we selected Odae Cheon basin in Pheongchang, which was affected by concentrated rainfall in July 2006. Actual concentrated rainfall and design rainfall derived from the Huff's method were used to calculate the discharge and storm water levels, which were compared with the directly measured water-level marks of storm discharges. The results showed that the peak storm discharge from the torrential rainfall was twice higher than the design rainfall. The short term discharges from concentrated rainfall closely corresponded to the rainfall discharges of 150 years storm frequency.
