Rain Attenuation Prediction at Different Time Percentages for Ku, K, and Ka Bands Satellite Communication Systems over Nigeria

  • This paper evaluates the influence of rainfall on propagated signal at different time exceedance percentages of an average year, over the climate zones of the country. Specifically, it demonstrates critical and non critical signal fade or signal outage time exceedance (0.001% to 1%) for Ku, K, and Ka-band systems in an average year. The study was carried out using meteorological data made available by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) over a period of 10 years (2009-2018). The four climate zones in the country were represented by five (5) locations; Maidugiri (warm desert climate), Sokoto (tropical dry climate), Port Harcourt (tropical monsoon climate), Abuja and Enugu (tropical savanna climate). The parameters were simulated into the International Telecommunications Union Recommended (ITU-R) models for rain attenuation over the tropics and results presented using MatLab and Origin Lab. Results of Ku band propagations showed that only locations in the tropical savanna and tropical monsoon climates experienced total signal outage for time percentage exceedance equal to or below 0.01% for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. At K band propagations, the five locations showed to have experienced signal outage at time exceedance equal to and below 0.01%, almost same was recorded for the Ka-band propagation. It was also observed that horizontal and vertical polarization of signal had slightly different rain attenuation values for the studied bands at the five locations, with horizontal polarization having higher values than vertical polarization.

2010년 9월 21일 추석 호우와 관련된 대류 세포의 위성 영상 분석 (Satellite Image Analysis of Convective Cell in the Chuseok Heavy Rain of 21 September 2010)

  • 이 연구에서는 MTSAT-2 적외 영상과 수증기 영상을 이용하여 2010년 9월 21일 추석 호우 사례에 대하여 대류운 생애주기의 각 단계에서 나타나는 특징을 조사하였다. 추석 호우와 관련된 최초의 구름은 20일 1630~1900 UTC에 서해 중부 지역에서 관측된 다중 세포의 하층운이다. 이 구름 가운데 일부가 1930 UTC에 산동반도 부근에서 휘도온도 $-45^{\circ}C$ 이하의 대류 세포로 발달한다. 이 때 이 지역은 수증기 영상에서 암역의 가장자리에 위치한다. 대류 세포는 동진하다가 한반도 중서부 해안 부근에서 21일 0030과 0430 UTC에 두 차례의 병합을 거쳐 급격히 발달한다. 이후 21일 0430에서 1000 UTC까지 약 6시간 동안 위성 영상에서 구름의 면적은 상대적으로 작고, 수평 이동속도는 느려졌다. 최저 휘도온도는 약 $-75{\sim}-65^{\circ}C$로 매우 낮게 유지되며, 잘 발달한 부세포가 반복적으로 형성되는 특징을 보인다. 레이더 자료에는 국지적으로 50 mm/hr 이상의 강우율을 보이는 좁은 띠 모양의 강우 밴드가 나타나고 이 밴드는 대류운의 남서쪽 가장자리에 위치한다. 그러나 수치 모델 자료의 종관 규모 역학적 강제항에는 뚜렷한 특징을 찾기 어렵다. 대류 세포의 구름 면적은 21일 1000 UTC 이후 짧은 시간에 급격한 증가를 보이고 뒤이어 소멸한다. 이러한 대류 세포의 발달과 관련된 위성 영상의 특징은 중규모 호우의 초단기 예보와 실시간 예보에 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

The Response of the Solar Chromosphere and Transition Region to a Coronal Rain Event

  • We report that a strong downflow event caused three-minute oscillations in the solar atmosphere. Our observations were carried out by using the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) of the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope (NST) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Our main findings are as follows: (1) The strong downflow was seen at the $H{\alpha}$ absorption line at first, and then appeared at the Si IV and C II emission lines. It seems that the characteristics of the downflow are consistent with a coronal rain event. (2) After the event, oscillations of velocity were identified in the chromospheric lines and transition region lines. (3) The amplitudes of oscillations were 2km/s at Mg II line and 3km/s at C II and Si IV lines and decreased with time. (4) The period of the oscillation was 2.67 minutes at first, but gradually increased with time. Our findings are in agreement with Chae & Goode (2015)'s theory that of acoustic waves generated by a disturbance in a gravitationally-stratified medium.

Moisture distribution in concrete subjected to rain induced wetting-drying

  • A rational estimation of moisture distribution in structural concrete is vital for predicting the possible extent and rate of progression of impending degradation processes. The paper proposes a numerical scheme for analysing the evolution of moisture distribution in concrete subjected to wetting-drying exposure caused by intermittent periods of rainfall. The proposed paradigm is based on the stage wise implementation of non-linear finite element (FE) analysis, with each stage representing a distinct phase of a typical wet-dry cycle. The associated boundary conditions have been constituted to realize the influence of various meteorological elements such as rain, wind, relative humidity and temperature on the exposed concrete surface. The reliability of the developed scheme has been demonstrated through its application for the simulation of experimentally recorded moisture profiles reported in published literature. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out to study the influence of critical material properties on simulated results. The proposed scheme is vital to the service life modelling of concrete structures in tropical climates which largely remain exposed to the action of alternating rains.

黃砂現象時 降水의 化學的 成分에 關한 硏究 (A Study on the Chemical Composition of Precipitation during the Period of Sandy Dust Phenomena)

  • Sandy dust phenomena was observed from April 19 to 23, 1988 in Seoul. During this period it rained and the precipitation was collected to investigate the rain chemistry. This study was carried out to analyzed the chemical composition of precipitation by the measurements of conditivity, cations $(H^+, NH_4^+, K^+, Na^+, Ca^{2+}, MG^{2+})$, and anions $(SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, Cl^-, F^-, Br^-)$ which are believed to be the major ions playing an important role in the acidity of rain water. During the period of sandy dust phenomena the range of pH value and conductivity concentration of rainwater were 6.0-6.7, 172-254 $\mu \mho/cm$. The anions and cations concentrations increased and the orders of these concentrations were $SO_4^{2-} > Cl^- > NO_3^- > Na^+ > Ca^{2+} > NH_4^+ > Mg^{2+}$. THe principal chemical compounds of rainwater were estimated at $(NH_4)_2 SO_4, CaSO_4, NaCl, and MgCl_2$.

충남 웅천에서 관측된 강수의 산성도 연구 (Acidity Analysis of Precipitation Occurred at Woongchon, Choongnam)

  • Sampling of precipitation occurred at Woongchon in Choongnam from the period between May 1994 and April 1995 was made, and analysis on the data was carried out on observed pH values of the precipitations. It was found that weighted mean pH values were .sim. 4.8 and that acid rain occurred at the site of the Yellow Sea's coastal area. The results agree well with the earlier observations made at other sites of a background monitoring network. The annual values observed at the background monitoring sites were too low in comparison with the mean pH values (5.3 .sim. 5.9) obtained from urban stations of the Ministry of Environment. It was observed that values of pH in rain water often changed with time during the event of precipitation, and the low values usually depended on an airflow and a cyclone that originated in the source region.

  • This study is carried out to investigate the chemical composition of atmospheric deposition in Cheju Island, Korea. For this purpose, dustfall matter samples are collected by dust jar from August, 1995 to July, 1996 at five sampling sites and total suspended particulate matters (TSP) and rain are also collected at one site from October, 1995 to July, 1996. All the samples collected are analyzed, and then the information of the 19 chemical species and deposition amount of each species is obtained. These data are used to determine the regional trends in dustfall chemistry and deposition, and compare the characteristics of chemical compositions between dustfall, TSP and rainwater.

  • 본 논문에서는 측우기 관측자료와 현대 관측자료로 이루어진 서울 강수량 시계열 자료에 나타난 시간에 따른(년도별 및 계절별)변화 및 변동 특성을 파악하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 200여년 간의 강수량 시계열에 어떤 특정한 증감 추세가 있는지를 알아보는 추세분석을 실시하였다. 그리고 추세뿐만 아니라 시간에 따른 강수량의 주기성 및 변동성을 더 자세히 알기 위하여 파엽 변환(wavelet transform)을 실시하여 여러 진동 모드들의 시간에 따른 변화 양상을 분석하였다.

  • This study was carried out to plan the prevention of the generation and discharge of acid mine drainage (AMD). Hydraulic characteristics were tested with the disk tension infiltrometer around the waste rock dump of the Imgi abandoned pyrophyllite mine in Busan, Korea. Because the waste rock dump of the Imgi mine have very low infiltration rate, most of rain was expected flowing into adjoined stream through the slope or plane as surface flow rather then throughflow or ground water. But slopes of the waste rock dump have many 'V' type erosion gullies and consist multi-layers. These gullies and multi-layers have coarse clastic particle layer which have very large hydraulic conductivity. So through these coarse clastic particle layers a large part of rain flow into ground. And also these layers could be played a function of aeration path, which induced oxidation of sulfide minerals and generation of AMD continuously.tinuously.

  • The purpose of this paper Is to present and discuss some of evaporation and desiccation observed in laboratory experiments under controlled conditions, and is to improve PTM(Progressive Trenching Method) operating technique. PTM is the technically feasible and economically justifiable dewatering and desiccation technique for dredged material containment areas. A series of laboratory experiments with large model test were carried out to get evaporation rate and strength increase. Surface desiccation of dredged material is basically changed by evaporation characteristics which is controlled by weather and trench type, etc. This study shows that trench depth and rain fall are important factors in desiccation of dredged soft clay.
