  • This study aims to find the characteristics of damage and states of natural disasters at Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do from 1985 to 2004. Using the data of Statistical yearbook of calamities issued by the National Emergency Management Agency and Annual Climatological Report issued by the Korea Meteorological Administration. we have analyzed the cause, elements, and vulnerable regions for natural disasters. Major causes of natural disaster at Gimhae are four, such as a heavy rain, heavy rain typhoon, typhoon, storm snow, and storm. The cause of disaster recorded the most amount of damage is typhoon. The areas of Hallim-myeon, Sangdong-myeon, and Saengnim-myeon are classified the vulnerable region for the natural disasters in Gimhae. Therefore, it seems necessary to build natural disaster mitigation plan each cause of disaster to control water resources and to reduce damage for these areas.

  • A long-term water quality monitoring in the Han River Basin reveals a consistent increasing trend for the concentration of refractory organic matter (R-OM) in major monitoring sites of the watershed. Because the determination of R-OM concentrations typically requires a long time of microbial incubation, it is essential to present the estimation indices for R-OM for an efficient watershed management. In this study, a number of surface water samples were classified into three groups, each of which were collected from Lake Paldang, rivers at rain and non-rain events, respectively. The corresponding R-OM concentrations were correlated with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations as well as ultraviolet and fluorescence intensities of the filtered samples. Among the traditional organic matter parameters, TOC exhibited the highest correlation coefficient with the R-OM concentrations regardless of the types of the sample groups. The equations for conversing TOC into R-OM concentrations were finally suggested as $0.43{\times}TOC+1.12$, $0.44{\times}TOC+0.61$, $0.24{\times}TOC+1.28$ for river samples at rain and non-rain events, and lake samples, respectively. TOC-BOD(C), the values of the TOC concentrations subtracted by carbon-converted BOD concentrations, was a good index for estimating the absolute concentrations of R-OM. UV absorbance at 254 nm was well correlated with R-OM concentrations of river samples while fluorescence intensities at 350 nm showed an excellent relationship with R-OM concentration of the lake samples. Our results suggests that simple spectroscopic parameters could be applied for in-situ monitoring tool techniques in watersheds.

  • Urban stormwater runoff is the one of the most extensive causes of deterioration of water quality in streams in urban areas. Especially, in the Suyeong River watershed, non-point sources from urban-residential areas are the most common cause of water pollution. Also, it has been ascertained that BOD and COD as indexes of organic matter, have limitation on management of Suyeong River's water quality. In this study, changes of organic matter properties of Suyeong River from inflow of non-point source during rainfall were investigated. Fractions of organic matters were analyzed using water samples collected at two sites (Suyeong River and Oncheon Stream) during a rain event. Variations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration by rainfall were similar to flow rate change in the river. Distribution of organic matter fraction according to change of rain duration revealed that while hydrophilic component increased at initial rainfall, the hydrophobic component was similar to change in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. Also, the relative proportion of hydrophilic components in organic matter in river water increased, due to rainfall. Results of biodegradation of organic matters revealed that decomposition rate of organic matters during rainfall was higher than that of during a non-rainfall event.

  • Recently, the number of natural disasters caused by inclement weather conditions such as localized heavy rainfall, Typhoon, etc. is increasing in Korea, which requires relevant prevention and water management measures. Rain gauges installed on the ground have strengths in continuously·directly measures ground precipitation but cannot provide accurate information on spatial precipitation distribution in the areas without the rain gauges. The present research has designed and developed an electromagnetic-based multi-purpose precipitation gauge(EWRG, Electromagnetic Wave Rain Gauge) that can measure rainfall at the real time, by overcoming spatial representativeness. In this paper, we propose an FPGA-based signal processing design method for EWRG. The signal processing of the EWRG was largely designed by calculating the ADC and DDC of the LFM waveform, pulse compression, correlation coefficient and estimating the precipitation parameter. In this study, the LFM waveform and pulse compressed signal were theoretically analyzed.

  • Gangwon State is centered on the Taebaek Mountains with very different climate characteristics depending on the region, and localized heavy rainfall is a frequent occurrence. Heavy rain disasters have a short duration and high spatial and temporal variability, causing many casualties and property damage. In the last 10 years (2012~2021), the number of heavy rain disasters in Gangwon State was 28, with an average cost of 45.6 billion won. To reduce heavy rain disasters, it is necessary to establish a disaster management plan at the local level. In particular, the current criteria for heavy rain warnings are uniform and do not consider local characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to propose a heavy rainfall warning criteria that considers the threshold rainfall for the advisory areas located in Gangwon State. As a result of analyzing the representative value of threshold rainfall by advisory area, the Mean value was similar to the criteria for issuing a heavy rain warning, and it was selected as the criteria for a heavy rain warning in this study. The rainfall events of Typhoon Mitag in 2019, Typhoons Maysak and Haishen in 2020, and Typhoon Khanun in 2023 were applied as rainfall events to review the criteria for heavy rainfall warnings, as a result of Hit Rate accuracy verification, this study reflects the actual warning well with 72% in Gangneung Plain and 98% in Wonju. The criteria for heavy rain warnings in this study are the same as the crisis warning stages (Attention, Caution, Alert, and Danger), which are considered to be possible for preemptive rain disaster response. The results of this study are expected to complement the uniform decision-making system for responding to heavy rain disasters in the future and can be used as a basis for heavy rain warnings that consider disaster risk by region.

  • The objective of this study was to develop and assess a method for estimating the rain scavenging ratios (RSRs) of particle-bound PAHs and PCBs using measured scavenging ratio of particulate matters (PM) and routinely available data of physico-chemical properties of PM. Paired atmospheric and rainwater sampling was conducted for a total of 4 rain events. Assuming equilibrium partitioning in rainwater-gas-PM system, an equation was derived for estimating the RSR of particle-bound chemicals as a function of RSR of PM and three equilibrium partition constants (i.e. dimensionless Henry's law constant, gas-particle partition coefficient, and water-particle partition coefficient). For all PAHs, the model significantly under-predicted the RSR while the model prediction for PCBs agreed with observation mostly within a factor of 5. The RSR model for the chemicals is of limited use as its accuracy critically depends on how close the observed partitioning of the chemicals in the gas-PM-rainwater system is to that estimated under the equilibrium assumption.

  • Climate change has continued to impact meteorological factors like rainfall in many countries including Nigeria. Thus, altering the rainfall patterns which subsequently affect the crop yield. Maize is an important cereal grown in northern Nigeria, along with sorghum, rice, and millet. Due to the challenge of water scarcity during the dry season, it has become critical to design appropriate strategies for planning, developing, and management of the limited available water resources to increase the maize yield. This study, therefore, determines the quantity of water required to produce maize from planting to harvesting and the impact of drought on maize during different growth stages in the region. Rainfall data from six rain gauge stations for a period of 36 years (1979-2014) was considered for the analysis. The standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI) is used to evaluate the severity of drought. Using the CROPWAT model, the evapotranspiration was calculated using the Penman-Monteith method, while the crop water requirements (CWRs) and irrigation scheduling for the maize crop was also determined. Irrigation was considered for 100% of critical soil moisture loss. At different phases of maize crop growth, the model predicted daily and monthly crop water requirements. The crop water requirement was found to be 319.0 mm and the irrigation requirement was 15.5 mm. The CROPWAT 8.0 model adequately estimated the yield reduction caused by water stress and climatic impacts, which makes this model appropriate for determining the crop water requirements, irrigation planning, and management.

  • There was a plan to develop a low-carbon green village(approximately $400,000m^2$) in A city, a new town. Restoration of water cycle is essential for creation of the low-carbon green village. Therefore, installation plan of LID-decentralized rainwater management facilities for natural water cycle was established for creation of the low-carbon green village. Analyses on effect of the water cycle were performed in conditions of before, after developing the low-carbon green village and after installing the LID facilities(rain garden, constructed wetland, rainwater harvesting facility, etc.) using SWMM-LID model developed by EPA. Due to the characteristic of permeable area before development and significant green spaces after development, installation plan of LID facilities to restore the water cycle did not show an obvious effect. However, potential of the hydrological cycle could be seen by the installation of the LID facilities.
