  • According to 'Metropolitan Traffic Network Plan' announced in 2001, radial railways which connect Seoul with satellite cities around Seoul appear gradually. And followed by this, social demand for circular metropolitan railways that can connect the radial railways horizontally is increasing. But existing plans about circular metropolitan railways has limits to propose only passing cities of the railways. If there is no detailed guideline for circular metropolitan railways, the each railway for circular line will be constructed individually and then it will be not effective circular railways totally. Additionally that railway project will be easily interrupted by popular complaints. Therefore "The basic plan for circular metropolitan railways" is needful to guide a right direction for circular metropolitan railways. In this paper, rough track diagram of 'node' station for circular metropolitan railways is proposed. It is essential part of the basic plan. If the track diagram of a node is publicized in advance and individually lines of circular metropolitan railways is enforced to followed it, all lines will has rich circular functionality. Finally, effective circular metropolitan railways can be built.

  • Now many metropolitan electric railways are being constructed on the metropolitan area. But railways now in service have some inefficiency. These railways are operated like subways, for example, all slow trains and fixed train set. So this paper proposes the methods of improvement. For making rapid train, it is showed ' philosophy of rapid train ' that makes rapid train to be main service. And for effective operation, it is introduced flexible train set and 'separation-unification operation'. And for smart railway tracks, it is introduced making loop track and direct connection track between radiating and circular railways. By these methods, a master plan of improvement of metropolitan electric railways is made and vision of the railways becomes common to passengers.

  • The aim of tins study is to compare the travel time of urban railway with that of arterial roads in the Seoul metropolitan area, focusing on the five main railways and arterials - Ilsan, Bundang, Kwacheon, Kyoungwon, and Kyoungin in order to make suggestions about improvements of railways. We found that the travel times of railways and arterials are about one and a half hour and an hour respectively, also the ratio of railway travel time to arterial travel time is 1.34 at peak and 1.58 at off-peak. We conclude that the competitiveness of the railroads is lower than the arterials. It will be necessary that we research the ways to improve the service of railways and investment ranking among the five main railways.

  • Currently KERI is participating a project whose goal is to develop the Korean High-Speed Train(KHST) with maximum speed of 350kph. KERI's responsibility is the electrical system engineering that includes engineering design of an on-board computer system for diagnosis and control of train set and electrical/mechanical devices. A system engineering approach of the design is performed in order to guarantee the passenger safety and economically viable train for on-board control system construction, operation and maintenance. This paper presents the draft engineering des on-board computer system that ensures the s and reliability of KHST. The draft is focuse network interfaced distributed processing system.

  • To improve traction effort performance and stability for the Korean High-Speed Railway Train, practical re-adhesion controller including a novel anti-slip control scheme is proposed. The presented method is verified by train running simulation results based on induction motor vector control with PWM inverter.

  • The railways in Russia is a core of the industrial, trade and technological development. They changed the country for the best affecting all sides of its life. The total length of the railways in Russia is 87,500 km (7% of the World railway network). They account for about a 25% of the World freight and 15% of the passenger traffic. In terms of length of electrified railways Russia is a World leader and in terms of total length of tracks it is second after the USA. Annual freight turnover is the third after the USA and China. • We have studied the financial performance of Pakistan Railways and found that the financial indicator (net earnings ratio) of Pakistan Railways is consistently decreasing over the years, causing severe financial and operational crises. The implication of our study indicates that the '3Rs' Strategy (retrenchment, repositioning and reorganizing) should be put into practice and furthermore, favorable changes in environmental factors can also contribute towards organizational turnaround. This study would help the Government of Pakistan to think and plan more clearly about turnaround strategies that could improve the performance and growth of Pakistan Railways.

  • Because railways themselves are not enough to provide door-to-door service, they need to be complemented by a transportation system access the stations and a convenient transfer system to access other railway lines. User friendly service policies include a faster, interconnected, and intermodal transportation system. It becomes more important to use deep subterranean space from an economical standpoint in order to promote railway construction projects. In this research, the authors dealt with construction plan for strengthening capacity of deep subterranean railways. Since deep subterranean railways are situated deeper underground than other railways, they are more difficult to access and transfer to, in addition to psychological pressure. Moreover, deep subterranean railways with high speed add access difficulties as the distance between stations increases. Therefore, the authors discuss not only systemization for uniting deep subterranean railways and other transportation facilities but also reinforcement strategies. The purpose of these strategies is so that deep subterranean railways provide mobility while established railways provide accessibility to overcome this problem.

  • Now a days many industries and bigger organisation (Indian Railways, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.) are facing difficulties in implementing the new technology because of non-availability of fully trained staff. Also for the employed technical and other staff lot of resistance management has to face to get them trained for adoption of new technology. There are also very less organisations who can design effective training programmes and at the same time develop course material specially multimedia packages and computer base training (CBT) which can satisfy the need of different target groups of industries. Indian Railways was also facing similar situation while implementing the Air Brake System technology In Indian Railways. TTTI Bhopal took that challenge and designed, developed and trained Indian Railways trainer for implementation of the package on different target group. The present paper offers a case study on the same.
