The transition zone between railway embankment and structures, or different track types is known to be an area in which problems often arise and where extra care needs to be taken with maintenance. Differences in track stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the force in the track and the extent of deformation. In this study, the criteria for the change ratio of track stiffness along transition area, and proper transition length are presented through train/track interaction analyses. Those are derived on the basis of permissible limitations of train and track performances such as rail stress, uplift force of fastener, reduction of dynamic wheel force, and acceleration of car body. A feasible method of evaluation of track stiffness which is necessary when a designer reviews whether the criteria are satisfied or not is also presented.
In this paper, the objective is an evaluation of economics using Life Cycle Cost(LCC) analysis for the ballasted track and the concrete track. However, since the absence of reliable data on maintenance activities, the degree of a reliability about the results of the LCC analysis is insufficient yet. In order to remedy the problems, we surveyed a professional research group for an approximate estimation which can be represented a degree of maintenance through a application of examples. Hereby we found that it is possible to expect the retrenchment of cost using preventive maintenance management. Moreover we proposed appropriate and economical restrictions between track structures.
Railway tracks are the direct supporting structures of the trains, which are vulnerable to produce large deformation under the temperature stress or subgrade settlement. The health status of track is critical, and the track should be routinely monitored to improve safety, lower the risk of excess deformation and provide reliable maintenance strategy. In this paper, the distributed optical fiber sensor was proposed to monitor the continuous deformation of the track. In order to validate the feasibility of the monitoring method, two deformation monitoring tests on one steel rail model in laboratory and on one real railway tack in outdoor were conducted respectively. In the model test, the working conditions of simply supported beam and continuous beam in the rail model under several concentrated loads were set to simulate different stress conditions of the real rail, respectively. In order to evaluate the monitoring accuracy, one distributed optical fiber sensor and one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor were installed on the lower surface of the rail model, the strain measured by FBG sensor and the strain calculated from FEA were taken as measurement references. The model test results show that the strain measured by distributed optical fiber sensor has a good agreement with those measured by FBG sensor and FEA. In the outdoor test, the real track suffered from displacement and temperature loads. The distributed optical fiber sensor installed on the rail can monitor the corresponding strain and temperature with a good accuracy.
Due to the travelling of the train with high speed the period of maintenance activities of the ballasted track is coming to be short, and more from the residential area of the ballasted track tunnel circumference the civil appeal is increasing with railroad vibration problem. To reduce the vibration problem and a maintenance cost establishes the ballast mat in the tunnel within part segment. In this study, to estimate the vibration reduction effect of the ballast mat we have done a comparative analysis with the vibration field test by the transit train by at the ballasted track with ballast mat and the standard ballasted track without vibration protection in tunnel.
A geometric contact conditions of wheel/rail affect the dynamic behavior of rolling stock. Mechanical force acted on the wheel/rail causes excessive wear and increase the maintenance cost. In this study, we have studied the dynamic behavior of the urban railway vehicle with new and worn wheel by VAMPIRE program. And we have tested the accelerations of wheelset on the conventional line. The results of simulation are compared with the measuring data of field test. It shows that the acceleration of worn wheel is greater than the acceleration of new wheel in the straight track line but on the contrary, the acceleration of new wheel is greater than the acceleration of worn wheel in curved track. That results explain that the new wheel is worn out greater than the worn wheel in curved track line and need to be maintained more seriously when running in curved track line.
Generally, there are many types of data, such as wear data or irregularity data, are detected for analyzing railway performance. The analysis of railroad wear or irregularity data is most effective method for the efficient railway maintenance. Especially, the track damaged directly by train, have as important position with the inspection data. This study suggest the Life-Cycle performance analysis method and process of railroad by analyzing two types of data, wear data and irregularity data. This analysis methods can be applied to suggest the Life-Cycle performance of railroad based on environmental factors or design factors, such as sleeper type, roadbed type, cant, the radius of curvature, speed, maintenance history and so on.
Gravel ballasted tracks are used as a basic structure for the domestic railway tracks. However, such kind of tracks has few disadvantages with service life of the structure, such as rapid deterioration of the tracks. Due to this reason, there is a need to develop low maintenance track to improve the service life of the conventional line tracks. CMP paved tacks are one of the kind of concrete tracks those were manufactured by using the prepacked concrete techniques. The purpose to develop paved tracks is to reduce the maintenance cost. The most important controlling factors to design the paved tracks are surrounding environmental condition and repeated train loading. In this study, in order to investigate the deformation characteristics such as displacement, earth pressure, strain ratio, and crack along the repeated loading cycle, cyclic loading test through real scale model was carried out.
Most of design parameters of Railway Structures are determined by the serviceability requirements, rather than the structural safety requirements. The serviceability requirements come from Ensuring of running safety and ride comfort of train, reduction of track maintenance working Track-Bridge interaction should be considered in the design of railway structures. In this study, a numerical method which precisely evaluate an axial force of rail and a rail expansion and contraction when turnout exist in succession on a CWR of bridge is developed.
The report of the intergovernment panel on climate change(IPCC) concluded that the global warning due to Green-house Gas(GHGs) will be accelerated in the 21th century. The railroad construction sector consumes a great deal of natural resources and energy in construction. maintenance, and demolition stage. In order to establish and perform reducing plan of GHGs of railway track system for effective corresponding the Climate Change Agreement, the evaluation method of the lifecycle CO2 emission if needed. In this research, it was investigates that the research trend for the LCCO2 and the method to estimate the lifecycle carbon dioxide emission amount of the railway track system as quantitative.
As for track maintenance, Seoul Metro executes track bed improvement project from obsolete ballast track bed to concrete track bed in order to achieve maintenance free and to extend its LCC(Life Cycle Costing). When it comes to obsolete ballast track bed withdrawal task, now it is done solely relying on man power and ballast inhalation vehicle. In this paper, I suggested ballast cleaning system with lighter equipment to change manpower withdrawal tasks to mechanized ones. It is expected to improve work efficiency and economic benefits by applying track excavator having variable wheels and container etc, which is able to keep on the site.
