  • In railway system, the transportation plan corresponds to master plan for transport services. This service plan must be constructed to minimize operational cost or maximize revenue considering transportation demands and resource capacities in the operation company, and includes several sub-planning activities such as train operation frequency plan, train (schedule) plan, train capacity assignment plan, and rolling stock requirement plan. In this paper, we present profitability evaluation system for current transportation plan. The proposed system can be used for evaluating profitability by estimating train service revenue considering customer demands.

  • The catenary wires are damaged by periodic running of train as well as repeated stress. The wires are also degraded by atmosphere corrosion at fields. Corrosion of wires increased surface roughness and deteriorated mechanical properties by providing fatigue crack initiation sited resulting in a bad effect on service life of the wires. Fatigue test of catenary wires performed to estimate service lifetime. Also, simulation to analyze stress on catenary wires was conducted through modelling the finite elements for dynamic behaviors of wires. Fatigue life of catenary wires was estimated with fatigue and simulation tests.

  • There are two kinds of police authorities in Korean railway industry, that is, the Special Judicial Police and the Local Subway Police. The existence of two separate entities for common objective of railway security has given rise to problems including inefficiency in performance and lack of customers-focused police service and synergic effects. The purpose of this study is to search for solutions to rail crimes that allows for rapid spatial movements since they take place on fast moving trains.

  • Railway safety is one aspect of the transport service quality delivered to passengers, employees and third parties. To improve safety by a cultural shift from a deterministic to a risk based approach, European Railway Agency (ERA) introduces common and transparent methods to monitor safety performance and set targets and establishes safety management systems. The objective of this study is to review the common safety performance management method of the ERA(European Railway Agency) for it's application to the Korea railway. For this end, the risk assessment models were developed based on the accident scenarios and domestic railway accidents had been investigated and quantitative and qualitative analyses was performed using the developed information system.

  • Railway wheel and axle are the most critical components in railway system. A wheel and axle failure can cause a derailment with its attendant loss of life and property. The service conditions of railway vehicles have become severe in recent years due to a general increase in operating speeds. Therefore, more precise evaluation of wheelset strength and safety has been desired. Damages of railway wheel are a spatting by wheel/rail contact and thermal crack by braking heat etc. One of the main source of damage is a residual stress. therefore it is important to evaluate exactly. A Residual stress of wheel is formed at the process of heat treatment when manufacturing. it is changed by contact stress developed by wheel/rail contact and thermal stress from heat induced in braking. The objective of this paper is to estimate the variation and magnitude of the residual stress of railway wheel.

  • Ubiquitous information technology creates new space connected to electronic and physical space and makes new life pattern come true. Although it is expected that ubiquitous technology will lead significant changes on various life fields, relevant studies on its market needs, customer needs in social and cultural context and its necessity at organizational level have been passively carried out. What is worse, IT technology application scheme in railway field has not fully established since railway field's technology development is mainly focused on hardware compared with road and air traffic. In order to apply ubiquitous technology to railway field, therefore, it is required to identify ubiquitous technology functions which applicable to railway field and to establish ubiquitous rail system implementation scheme for end users. In this paper, we suggested implementation scheme for u-Rail which sorts railway industry by its components in order to implement service centered ubiquitous technology to each railway industry field.

  • The new information service has been demanded due to the recent mobile internet activation, and the government is promoting the activation of the private use of the public data by putting up the Government 3.0. According to government policy, many public sectors provide public data, but the railway sector is inferior to other public sector. In the case of national railway corporation, urban railway is now operated by 14 corporations such as Seoul Metro through the nation and high-speed railway is now operated by Korea Railroad Corporation and Supreme Railways. It is very difficult to standardize and integrate data due to mutual interests of national railway corporation. This paper describes a way to standardize and integrate rail passengers information collected through research project.

  • In 1990's, in Europe and some advanced nations, the structural reform of the railroad industry for improving the productive efficiency of the railroad industry and competitive power had been progressed. This paper empirically explores the relationship between railway restructuring and productive efficiency in the railway industry. We use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to construct efficiency scores, and explain these scores, using Tobit regression analysis by using variables reflecting institutional factors and organizational type. Our results suggest that vertical separation, infrastructure and services are separated, and horizontal separation, passenger service and freight service are separated, improve productive efficiency. We also find that market competition has positive effect on the efficiency, but independent management from the government has negative effect, which is in line with economic intuition as well as with expectations on the railway restructuring. As a consequence, increased independence without sufficient competition and adequate regulation may deteriorate incentives for productive efficiency.

  • With the development of IT industry and formation of web-based knowledge sharing platform, a variety of railway-related information services on the web have emerged, ranging from personal blogs to dedicated portal sites, as in the other sectors. These services are contributing to advancing railway industry after all. As far as it is concerned with specific areas such as railway sector, the internet users are hardly expected to avail satisfactory results in acquiring customized information from the access, as the information served varies on the intension of the web site operator or relevant agency, and indexing categories and sub-categories is not easy to work out in a straight manner. This study will review on the feasibility of standardizing categories and sub-categories for railway industry information on the web, and present optimum categorization and sub-categorization approach for the most satisfactory results when searched, ultimately aiming at laying a foundation to satisfy the wide spectrum of users' need for railway information.
