  • In order to make an feasibility analysis of such as rail and road transportation infrastructure, it is common to perform economic analysis. one of the most important thing is how to estimate the operation cost of freight rail because that is required during the analysis time period and sometimes that takes more cost than the construction cost. Therefore, this study is to perform the verification of freight rail operation cost which is applied to the economic analysis of railway investment analysis. for this, it is compared truck operation cost variation with freight rail operation cost, when freight volume is converted from road to railway. In conclusion the cost variation of railway part is bigger than road part so it is necessary to improve the operation cost of freight rail estimation process.

Economic Evaluation of ESS in Urban Railway Substation for Peak Load Shaving Based on Net Present Value

  • In this paper, we estimate the economic benefits of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) for peak load shaving in an urban railway substation using the annual cost. The annual investment cost of ESSs is estimated using Net Present Value (NPV) and compared with the cost reduction of electricity by the ESS. The optimal capacities of the battery and Power Converting System (PCS) are determined for peak load shaving. The optimal capacity of the ESS and the peak load shaving is determined to maximize the profit by the ESS. The proposed method was applied to real load data in an urban railway substation, and the results show that electric power costs can be reduced. Other aspects of the ESS, such as the lifetime and unit price of the battery, are also investigated economically.

  • This Study is about adoption of slab track on the new high speed railway line between Daegu and Busan. While ballast track currently used is easy to construct with low investment, the error margin of rail track occurs in the track due to the repetition load of the train. Therefore, repairs should be carried out all the time to put the railway track at the repair level or less. In addition, noise caused by such repairs has become a new social problem at night. Construction costs for slab track are about 1.3-1.5 times higher than those for ballast track. However, slab track will save labor costs by solving various problems of ballast track. In this regard, it is feasible to adopt slab track on the new high speed railway line between Daegu and Busan.

  • Recently the role of a railroad is emphasized as the imprortant part for growth for the low carbon green growth and the social consensus about the railroad investment is actively progressed. The various social economic value in which the travel demand change over of the environment-friendly railroad system can bring becomes with public debate as much as a discussion is not any more necessary. In this research, the influence that it recognized that the travel time improvement by the high speed rail was the most important element among many method that it can increase the railroad use efficiency in which it connects the interregional major cities and the railway travel time improvement reaches to the rate of railway and road travel time, and the environment like the carbon emission quantity was comprehensively inquired.

  • Railway is superior to the other land transportation systems in aspects of environmental problems. Environmental problems are not considered during a preliminary feasibility study. Investment for railway is low because of low B/C(benefit/cost)ratio in the economical efficiency analysis during the preliminary feasibility study. The body of this paper studies the railway noise which can reflect environmental problems an assessment of environmental impact. The body of this paper studies the presumption of The Benefit Cost of railroad noise arresting it will be able to reflect the evaluation environmental matter of the effect which it gives to an environment.

  • With the global adoption of the reduction policy on greenhouse gas and environmental pollution, that is 'low carbon green growth', the central and local governments strive to increase their investments in railways in an effort to replace fossil fuels, and seek the ways to diversify and vitalize the tourism resources taking full advantage of the railway systems. Seoul metro has therefore launched 'A research on the development of the Bukhan mountain railway' for the establishment of the environmentally friendly tourism belt making good use of Mt. Bukhan., the only national park in the Seoul metropolitan area, with its picturesque scenery. This paper pursues the basic directions for the application scope of the relevant laws and regulations for the development of the mountain railways as part of our continuing effort to further 'A study on the development of the Bukhan mountain railway' along with the review on the project implementation policy pursuant to the applicable laws on private investment for social infrastructures.

  • This paper is aiming to study of the speed-up of the railway freight services. Recently investment in freight continues to support the growth both traditional and intermodal markets, and will begin to influence newer markets. Railways offer the highest speeds in ground-based transport systems and therefore offer competitive transport times on routes between large cities. In freight transport, top speeds of 100$\∼%$150km/h are competitive with the road transport. The speed of freight railway can be increased in particular by the creation of a network of freight corridors, the speed-up of freight train, and efficient transhipment installations.

  • There are two methodologies to increase transport capacity of railway. One is to invest railroad equipment or vehicles, and the other is to improve operation efficiency through optimization. All of these is intended to increase transport capacity by improving the line capacity, So far, we treat the line capacity as the criteria for evaluating investment alternatives or for restricting train frequencies, and this criteria is calculated statical and experimental numerical formula. But, line capacity has special attribute that changes dynamically according to operational conditions, so there is a need of new line capacity estimation system. Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI) proposed a new line capacity estimation system based on the probability simulation method. In this research. we perform analysis of line capacity for the railway improvement alternatives, and to represent the results.

  • Railway safety case is an important measure for demonstrates operating company's capability, commitment and competence in accordance with Railway Regulation 2000 in UK. Safety case describes the scope of operation, definition and boundary of activity, risk analysis, system safety activity, annul safety plan. Relationships between' these components and company's policy, organization, human resource, control measure, investment plan are also included. A case study for Network Rail (infrastructure manager)'s safety case is described in this paper for the construction of safety rule and safety planning.

  • Many long railway tunnels without emergency evacuation system or ventilation system are under construction or in-use in Korea. In the case of tunnel-fire, many fatalities are occur in current condition. Current safety level is estimated in this study, for the efficient investment on safety. But so many uncertainties in major input parameters make the safety estimation difficult. In this study, probabilistic techniques are applied for the consideration of uncertainties in major input parameters. As results of this study, accident scenarios and survival ratio under tunnel fire accident are determined for various conditions.
