  • To maintain the stability during the operation of railway vehicle, the perfect installation of rail, namely the orbit as well as the performance of the railway vehicle itself is required. The orbit of railway needs the intensity and elasticity that stands the shock and vibration due to the weight of the railway vehicle enough. Also, the driving safety during the operation of vehicle should be guaranteed, comfortable feeling of the passenger should be maintained, and the influence of the noise and vibration to the environs should be minimized. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program that calculates the change of construction cost according to the selection of railway orbit. This study introduces the orbit design automation program according to the selection of railway orbit, and discuss the principle and the way to use of the program.

  • This study has described the case that has been experienced personally by centering on discords created in railway construction projects while performing practical duties at the construction field. Accordingly, as seen from the experience of performing one method called discord reconciliation conference, it seems that there are many parts to be improved on for the particular details because the conference was progressed by the position of a non professional in its content or procedure. But as seen from the word origin called "discord", looking at the state of finding one solution after another from vagueness of solving difficult and entangled problems, we could sense that the sincere communication and honesty was more progressive method in the phase of looking for one solution after another. Although this essay was centered on a typical case of railway construction project, I hope for it to spread throughout the whole society and especially hope that many discords created in public work sites such as public works would become settled smoothly between the parties concerned.

  • This study is to retest of seoul traffic, all sorts of statistical data, the present condition of urban railway that local government and all sorts of research institution had researched. Even though, or something else with population and regional industrial distribution of seoul with worker and the present condition of the registrated cars and the change of increase, we have predicted the medium term and long-range solution. we have proposed the alternative plan about both of the problem that is the developmental construction direction of seoul urban railway and the resource insurance for urban railway construction.

  • The railway structure for a rubber-wheeled automated guide-way transit system consists of a driveway and a guide-way. The most important factor of this system is the driveway and the guide-way aligned with each other, especially for curves and inclines section. The conventional construction method caused many problems such as discordancy by constructing the driveway before constructing the guide-way. Therefore, in this paper we introduce a new method of constructing a railway for a rubber-wheeled light rail vehicle; the new method of constructing the guide-way beforehand as a preceding process. The new method for AGT railway system can simplify the construction process and thus the construction costs may be reduced. It should also improve the driving performance and the comfortability in operating of a light rail vehicle.

  • Active application of auger-drilled piling is expected in Korea considering its advantage in noise and vibration problems against driven piling and its cost-effectiveness in comparison to the cast in-situ piling. The current design practice being used in Korea is adopted from the Japanese one, however the equipment and construction procedure is modified for the geotechnical conditions and construction circumstances in Korea. Therefore there is an urgent need for the establishment of the rational design criteria for the auger-drilled piling in Korea. As the preliminary work for the establishment, this paper presents the current practice in Korean railway constructions. Design criteria of Korea Railway Network Authority are introduced and its characteristics and the problems are described. Application cases of auger-drilled pile to railway construction are introduced as well.

Sustainability Appraisal of Chinese Railway Projects In Nigeria: Afoot

  • It is no news that Nigeria's infrastructure challenge is enormous. In the global ranking, Nigeria ranked low in quantity and quality of its infrastructural provision which has a great impact on the ease of business transaction. Low investments in transportation have brought about the current infrastructural deficit. Recently, the Nigerian government has made effort to address at least to some extent the infrastructural deficit through Public-Private Partnership, but this has not yielded the desired result. Moreover, the sustainability issues relating to railway projects such as, emissions, noise pollution, ecosystem, and other environmental issues calls for urgent attention. Hence, this necessitated consideration on sustainability appraisal for the Chinese rail project in Nigeria. This study reviews sustainability of railway projects built by the Chinese firm in Nigeria with particular emphasis on the environmental and social impact of these projects. The study further identified issues and challenges in project implementation with a particular focus on civil dialogue and community engagements. A detailed literature search was conducted on railway projects and infrastructure by systematically reviewing selected published articles.The analysis of the selected articles identified sustainability issues and potential for improvement of Chinese railway projects and how they contribute to or inhibit competitiveness in the Nigerian railway market. From the literature searched, some of the projects constructed by Chinese firm revealed that there is economic and social impact of railway projects delivered by the Chinese firm in terms of capacity development and knowledge transfer potentiality. For instance, in the just concluded Lagos-Ibadan railway projects, the study gathered that the project brought about 5000 jobs and local staff were trained by the Chinese company, this will boost man power and local content capability. Also, it will significantly improve Nigeria's infrastructure and boost its economic development. The study suggests that Nigerian government should ensure and provide an enabling environment that is conducive for investment on the continent. Peace, improved security, and decent governance are the best conditions for sustainable transportation growth.

BIM-Based Virtual Construction Simulation for Steel Girder Installation Crossing the High-Speed Railway (고속철도 횡단 강거더 설치공사에서의 BIM 기반 가상건설 장비운영 시뮬레이션의 적용)

  • The interest in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology has risen remarkably due to the effects on construction work period reduction, cost reduction, work safety improvement, and other factors. In civil engineering field, BIM applications mainly focus on data modeling and virtual construction. In this study, we present the BIM-based virtual construction and analyze the effects of BIM for the railway facilities so that the conventional approach to the equipment operation plan can be improved in order to prevent safety accidents which can result from unclear information during the operation plan. The BIM-based virtual construction technology is applied to establish the construction plan for the site with constraints, the installation of steel girder needs to be completed, avoiding interference with the existing high-speed railway operation within a given limited time. A virtual construction model consisting of topography, structures, equipments, and avatar was built and more detailed model, including safety guard rails, was then created. Specifications of the construction equipment were input as a database, and the virtual construction model was manipulated in the equipment operation planning. Through the BIM-based virtual construction, including the verification of alternative construction method, 311 million won was saved and the construction period was shortened by 87 days compared to the original plan. In addition, it was shown that the interest and participation of the construction workers can be increased by providing the 3D virtual scene for real construction work and various safety hazards occurring during equipment operation can be effectively removed in advance by the interactive worker education.

  • As the prefecture railroad construction accelerates, unmanned system's reliability and safety is increasing in demand. Accordingly, effective management of construction projects for the PM and SE techniques are being applied, with the introduction and use of PMIS computerized systems. Due to the construction of railways, from the start of PMIS research planning, design, procurement, to construction and commissioning, various expertise is being carefully gathered, and by integrating it into the unified budget ideas and processes, rational, efficient, organized, and manageable financial plans are developed for the computerized system. However, the current PMIS does not take into account the life-cycle. This study is to bring attention to the BIM smart BOM-based configuration management for life-cycle through the consideration for railway construction project management.

  • Generally, 4D CAD can be used for visualizing construction schedule information in railway construction project. It is important that 3D CAD object should be represented by real construction situation according to construction site condition. However, it is difficult to visualize real construction situation in 4D CAD viewer because 3D objects should be separated by limited duration of each activity. This study suggests a morphing technology for visualizing 4D object by each activity schedule according to real construction progress.
