  • The dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shape and damping ratio are most important parameters in the high-speed railway bridges rather than general roadway bridges. Also, the need to know the dynamic behavior of bridges greatly increased in recent years. In the early of 1990s, to design the high-speed railway bridges, damping ratio recommended in general code was 2.5~7.5%. However, these values were not applied in all cases. Therefore, obtaining the damping value of specific structures is important to get the correct variable for design of high-speed railway bridges. The purpose of this study is mainly to obtain the damping ratio of high-speed railway bridges. The average damping ratio of high-speed railway bridges evaluated from a field test is about 2.4%.

  • Despite the number of steel bridges being under in service more than 50 years reaches about 50$\%$ in present, the quantitative estimation in maintenance on steel railway bridges is not possible because a ton of the field data in the bridges have not been plentifully accumulated. Therefore, a series of field tests on the steel plate girder bridge, the typical types of steel railway bridges, are executed, and the stress characteristics of main members in steel plate girder railway bridges are quantitatively estimated in this study.

  • This is the basic study on the evaluation of seismic performance for existing railway bridges. This study presents all evaluation items and a progressive method of seismic performance for existing railway bridges. In the evaluation of seismic performance, a two-stage is used. Firstly, according to the seismic performance evaluation categories, preliminary screening of bridges is recommended. And using tile seismic rating system, seismic rank of bridges is calculated. Secondly, for the selected bridges in the first stage, detailed evaluation is recommended.

  • The dynamic load effects, generated by moving trains, are transferred to the railway bridges through tracks. The dynamic load effects may vary due to the dynamic characteristics of the applied vehicle loads and the railway bridges including the track system. However, the track models have been neglected or simplified by spring elements in the most studies since it is quite complicated to consider the track systems in the dynamic analysis models of railway bridges. In this study track system on railway bridges are modeled using a three-dimensional discrete-support model that can simulate the load carrying behavior of tracks. A 40m simply supported prestressed concrete box-girder system adopted for high-speed railway bridges are modeled for simulation works. The train models are composed of 20 cars for KTX. The dynamic response of railway bridges are found to be affected depending on whether the track model is considered for not. The influencing rate depends on the traveling speed and different wheel-axle distance. The dynamic bridge response decreases remarkably by the track systems around the resonant frequency. Therefore, the resonance effect can be reduced by modifying the track properties in the railway bridge, especially for KTX trains.

  • The possibility of resonance exists always in railway bridges unlike highway bridges because railway bridges are loaded repeatedly by specific trains which has equidistant wheel loads. Resonance phenomenon of the bridge can be broken out when exciting frequencies by tram determined from the speed and effective beating internal coincides with natural frequencies of the bridge Excessive fluctuations of dynamic displacements and accelerations by resonance cause unpleasant passenger comfort and instability of railway structures. On the other hand, resonance suppression phenomenon that all the previous loads which pass through the bridge sum to zero can be occurred. In case we apply this resonance suppression properly, design of stable railway bridge from dynamics point of view can be made. In the present study, most dominant beating internal of conventional trams will be find. A(ter that. specific span length of the bridge which derives resonance suppression can be selected for railway bridges which accomplishes superior dynamic behavior.

  • Dynamic response is an important consideration because of the possibility of resonance according to KTX running over a railway bridges. When KTX runs over the bridge at critical speed, dynamic response is very depending on damping ratio. Current damping ratio for design of high-speed railway bridges adopted EUROCODE without verification of domestic railway bridges. The purpose of this study is to obtain the coherent damping ratio of high-speed railway bridges. Free vibration signal after KTX runs over a high-speed railway bridge was applied. The representative value from distribution of damping ratio was considered.

  • Bridges are vital components of the railroads. High speed of travel, the periodic and oscillatory nature of the loads and the comparable vehicle bridge weight ratio distinguish the railway bridges from the road bridges. The close proximity between estimations by some numerical methods and the measured data for the bridge-vehicle dynamic response under the moving load conditions has boosted the confidence in the numerical analyses. However, there is hardly any report regarding the responses of the railway bridges under the effect of the trains entering from the opposite directions while running at unequal speed and having dissimilar geometries. It is the purpose of this article to present an analytical method for the dynamic analysis of the railway bridges under the influence of two opposing series of moving loads. The bridge structural damping and many modes of vibrations are included. The concept of modal superposition is used to solve for the system motion equations. The method of solution is indeed a computer assisted analytical solution. It solves for the system motion equations and gives output in terms of the bridge deflection. Some case studies are also considered for the validation of the proposed method. Furthermore, the effects of varying some parameters such as the distance between the bogies, and the bogie wheelset distance are studied. Also, the conditions of resonance and cancellation in the dynamic response for a variety of vehicle-bridge specifications are investigated.

  • Recently, the demand on the practical application of life-cycle cost effectiveness for design and rehabilitation of civil infrastructure is rapidly growing unprecedentedly in civil engineering practice. Accordingly, it is expected that the life-cycle cost in the 21st century will become a new paradigm for all engineering decision problems in practice. However, in spite of impressive progress in the researches on the LCC, so far, most researches in Koreahave only focused on roadway bridges, which are not applicable to railway bridges. Thus, this paper presents the formulation models and methods for uncertainty-based LCCA for railroad bridges consideringboth objective statistical data available in the agency database of railroad bridges management and subjective data obtained form interviews with experts of the railway agency, which are used to anew uncertainty-based expected maintenance/repair costs including lifetime indirect costs. For reliable assessment of the life-cycle maintenance/repair costs, statistical analysis considering maintenance history data and survey data including the subjective judgments of railway experts on maintenance/management of railroad bridges, are performed to categorize critical maintenance items and associated expected costs and uncertainty-based deterioration models are developed. Finally, the formulation for simulation-based LCC analysis of railway bridges with uncertainty-based deterioration models are applied to the design-decision problem, which is to select an optimal bridge type having minimum Life-Cycle cost among various railway bridges types such as steel plate girder bridge, and prestressed concrete girder bridge in the basic design phase.

  • Steel -Concrete Composite two girder railway bridges applying high performance steel with extra thick plate have economic and aesthetic advantages due to the simplification of manufacturing and construction process. However, steel bridges are seldom adopted in domestic railway bridge, since steel bridges are not efficient as R.C bridges considering dynamic characteristics and noise, etc. While highway bridges do not have lower horizontal bracing and larger interval of diaphragm cross beam, railway bridges install lower horizontal bracings to control the torsion due to heavy eccentrical line load. Accurate finite element analysis were performed with the parameters of existence of bracing and bracing shape, with the cross beam interval and stiffness, etc. To find out the effects of secondary members such as horizontal bracings and diaphragms, static md dynamic analysis have been performed by using finite element method. In this study, few member plate-girder bridges are analyzed with variable span lengths to examine the dynamic behavior and limits of damping. And though lateral bracings are members against torsion, but lateral bracing's absence is no big problem. Time history analysis using mode superposition method makes proof of this result.
