  • The beginning of a new railroad history is progressing every year. Seoul's Sillim Line is a new transportation system based on communication technology. Sillim Line is the nation's first wireless communication-based unmanned train control system based on KTCS-M, the national standard. The use of wireless communication technology in the rail transportation system suggests the possibility of exporting to the global rail market. This is the result of the government's development and implementation of various support policies for nurturing the domestic railway industry and for export. In this paper, the status of support for localization of railroad industry technology implemented by the state is reviewed, and the process by which railroad parts are replaced by localized parts is analyzed out of dependence on foreign countries. A study was conducted on the development of a technical support platform to solve the technical difficulties of the industry that occurred in this process.

  • To operate Platform Screen Door (PSD) automatically, the operational data of PSD and the train must be interfaced properly. PSD and train are operated together by the signaling system in Automatic Train Operation (ATO) signaling system zone where interfaces are provided between PSD and train. However, the additional PSD interface system with train is required in train operating zone without the interface between PSD and train. For the PSD interface, the wireless communication system or the train status (train correct stop status / train door status) detection system has been used. Seoul Metro line No.2. has the PSD wireless communication system using 447MHz band RF. For the safety of PSD operation, it is required to prevent RF interference in the subway environment where many frequencies exist. In this paper, the PSD wireless communication system is developed using 2.4GHz band RF to prevent the interference of the wireless communication and increase the traffic of the PSD interface. Furthermore, the improved system can store, manage and display the PSD and train operational data using Human Machine Interface (HMI) in the train's driver cab.

  • The research about the Korean integrated wireless network for railways is in progress. The network integrates and complements the various railway functions. In addition, the network is trying to change from wire communication to radio communication. The activities for the railway frequency acquisition are also in progress for the implementation of the network. This paper analyzes the problems for the Korean railway communication networks. The problems revolve around the dispersed network structure, the limited functions, the different communication methods, the technology limitation for the communication methods, and the usage of the non-licensed band. Subsequently, we explain the current state and trend for the foreign communication of the railways. This paper suggests improvement plans for the problems and also explains the expected efficiency for the improvement plans.

  • Korean-Automated Guideway Transit (K-AGT) was successfully developed through Light Rail System Development Project. Since then, the domestic development rate of on-board signalling system of light rail has been improved up to 90% by Practical Utilization Project of Light Rail. After utilization project, furthermore, POSCO ICT has developed the wayside signalling system of CBTC, including wireless communication equipment. KRRI carried out the performance test of the wireless communication, interfacing and using the other CBTC equipments of KyungSan Test Line so as to see whether it conforms IEEE 802.11x, international communication standard in view of operational concept of CBTC. In this paper, we presents analysis results of roaming test while train runs.

  • CBTC(Communication-Based Train Control) system which is based on wireless communication can provide high density operation of the train using location tracking between ground and onboard train. It can also reduces maintenance expense because it does not require the ground equipment for tracking circuit and signal flag and so on. Recently, research and interest have been done on CBTC system. The high-speed trains up to 300km/h experience multi-path fading channel which bring about the performance degradation of wireless CBTC system. In this paper, we consider MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) antenna-based CBTC system for trains with Alamoutip-type space-time diversity transmission for reliable communication. Also we model a channel considering practical environment and evaluate performance improvement of proposed CBTC system.

  • The train control is a facility to ensure safe train operation, and its safety is the most important factor to determine whether introduced in railway authorities. Therefore, in order to improve practical usability in the business, safety analysis and evaluation of train control system and train control related core technologies are needed. In this paper, we develop wireless communication based train separation control simulator, the simulator traces trains in real-time, and produces train movement authorities with their position and speed information, and then calculates static and dynamic speed profiles. Trains in the simulator are controlled in real-time by these profiles. In the paper, simulator configuration, train control algorithm and simulation results under simulated environment are presented.

  • This paper proposes a new wireless backhaul technology based on MHN(Mobile Hotspot Network) which uses a wide frequency band of millimeter wave to provide wideband Wi-Fi services for subway passengers. Performance analysis of MHN up and down links, based on data: up and down links structure analysis of physical layer and simulation study of the MHN wireless backhaul link model, show that the proposed MHN-based wireless backhaul network can transmit data at a 1.2Gbps data rate and provide Internet service 100 times faster than that of conventional WiBro-based wireless backhaul networks. These results indicate that the proposed MHN technology is appropriate for subway mobile networks.

  • Since the opening of Korean high-speed rail, KTX in 2004, the use of trains in Korea soared. Improved rail technology, as well as the speed of the train was developed. However, the development of the train speed raised new issues of Doppler effect and this effect compensation. Depending on the speed of communication target, Doppler effect generates frequency shifting and this effect leads to a distortion of the signal. For this reason, the Doppler effect adversely affect the communication performance. Therefore, the Doppler effect problem must be solved for the railway wireless communication. In this paper, we present technique of compensation for the Doppler effect that occurs in high-speed railway communication and simulation result.

  • CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) is a railroad system, using wireless communication for data transmission between on-board units and ground units, that makes ground computer periodically collect position and speed data from each train and transmits the preceding train's distance data up to speed limit point so as to make on-board control unit control the optimum train speed. Due to the fact that wireless communication system for train control employs only limited frequency band and output frequency, a number of ground communication units should be installed at track-side; also a running train should carry out Handover function which maintains the communication by accessing a new communication channel of the adjacent on-board communication units in accordance with the output of received radio wave. Especially CBTC is largely dependent on Handoff function between ground communication units. Therefore, this paper provides the method of identification of hazard between ground communication units and on board units.
