  • As tilting train is the effective solution to provide faster passenger service on conventional railway lines without too costly modification of infrastructure, it is expected that tilting train will be put into service for Korean conventional Railway Lines. Very few passengers may suffer from motion sickness on conventional train and high speed train. But some sickness among passengers of tilting trains have been reported. Up to now, a standardized motion sickness index was mainly developed in the shipping domain. Therefore, there was a need for railway motion sickness index in order to predict and evaluate the motion sickness which is likely to be experienced by passengers. This paper is the preliminary investigation to propose the technical index related to motion sickness and nausea phenomena for the tilting train development and operation.

  • Tilting-train is very attractive to the railroad users in the world due to the advantage of high speed in curved track using pre-existing infrastructure of railway. Tilting-train has a unique allowable speed and mechanism especially in curved track. In this work, when tilting-train is operated with the allowable speed, the behavior of roadbed is evaluated by examining its settlement and bearing capacity. Additionally, the stability of roadbed is estimated as the roadbed is in the condition of soft soil influenced by the weather effects and cyclic train loading. Numerical results show that the roadbed settlement satisfies the allowable settlement when the elastic modulus of upper roadbed should be greater than $5000t/m^2$.

  • The aerodynamic effect on platform during the train passage, the results of field test on the high-speed railway platform are discussed and the whole test results and conclusions are synthesized. The field test for the high-speed railway have been conducted on the Osong temporary platform in the newly constructed Seoul-Busan high-speed line and total 12 measurements have been conducted for G7 train and KTX train. The results shows that the high-speed trains have similar aerodynamic characteristics and have far better characteristics referring to the conventional trains such as Saemaul and Mugungwha trains. To discuss the actual aerodynamic effects on the platform at its own operational speed, Beaufort wind scale have been introduced and the criteria for the safety on railway platform has also been discussed.

  • In the railway system, transportation plan corresponds to a m aster plan for transport services. This service plan must be constructed to minimize operational cost or maximize revenue considering transportation demands and resource capacities in the railway operation company, and it includes several sub-planning activities such as train operation frequency plan, train (schedule) plan, train capacity assignment plan, and rolling stock requirement plan. In these sub- planning processes, train can be con side red as a product for providing customer services, and customer demands and operational advantages must be considered. In this paper, we present an effect estimation system for the train capacity pattern in a train schedule, and the effect of capacity pattern can be expressed as minimum spilled demand, minimum train service cost, and maximum train revenue or profit.

  • The entry compression wave, which is generated at the entrance of the tunnel, is almost always associated with the pressure transients in the tunnel as well as the impulse noise at the exit of the tunnel. It is highly required to design the train nose shape that can minimize such undesirable phenomena. The objective of the current work is to investigate the effects of the train nose shape on the entry compression wave. Numerical computations were applied to one-dimensional unsteady compressible flow in high-speed railway train/tunnel systems. A various shape of train noses were tested for a wide range of train speeds. The results showed that the strength of the entry compression wave is not influenced by the train nose shape, but the time variation of pressure in the entry compression wavefront is strongly related to the train nose shape. The current method of the characteristics was able to represent a desirable nose shape for various train speeds. Optimum nose shape was found to considerably reduce the maximum pressure gradient of the entry compression wave.

  • The Extradosed PSC bridge is one of the best alternates which not only covers the longer span than PSC box girder and also performs the role of landmark facility with much cheaper cost than cable stayed bridge. Since the cable-stayed long span bridge is more flexible than general medium span bridges and railway bridges can be experienced resonance phenomenon by repeated equidistant axle loading of the train, it is inevitable to consider the dynamic behavior on impact, deflection and so on. In the present study, the dynamic behavior of an Extradosed PSC railway bridge subjected to moving train forces is analyzed. As well as trains which operate in conventional railway tines, KTX train is also considered. For the estimation of dynamic performances of the Extradosed PSC bridge, vertical deflection, accelerations of the slab, end rotation of the girder and impact on pylons and cables are discussed.

  • During the passage of the train, the railway bridge undergoes vibration and noise. The noise of railway bridge can be occurred from various sources. The wheel-rail contact, noise from machinery parts, structural-borne noise, pantagraph noise and aerodynamic noise of the train work in combination. Running train is one of the most important factors for railway bridge vibration. The repeated forces with equidistant axles cause the magnification of dynamic responses which relates with maintenance of the track structure and structure-borne noises. The noise problem is one of the most important issues in services of light rail transit system which usually passes through towns. In the present study, The vibration and noise of the LRT bridge will be investigated with utilizing dynamics responses from moving train as input data for noise analysis.

  • Station is an important building in high-speed railway, and its vibration and noise may significantly affect the comfort of waiting passengers. A coupling vibration model for train-structure system is established to analyze and evaluate the vibration level of a typical waiting hall under dynamic train load. The motion of a four-axle vehicle with two suspension system is modeled in multi-body dynamics with linear springs and dampers employed. The station is modeled as a whole finite element structure which is 113 m in longitudinal and 163.5 m in lateral, and the stiffness of the station foundation is considered. According to the assumptions that both wheel and rail are rigid bodies and keep contact to each other in vertical direction, and the wheel/rail interaction and displacement coordination in horizontal direction is defined by the simplified Kalker creep theory, the vehicle spatial vibration model has 27 degrees-of-freedom. An overall analysis procedure is made of the train moving through the station, by which the dynamic responses of the train and the station are calculated. According to the comparison between analysis and test results, the actual connection status between different parts of the station is estimated and the vibration level of the waiting hall is evaluated.

  • The experiments for aerodynamic characteristics of railway acoustic screen are performed using 1/61 scaled-down moving model rig facility which employs an axis symmetry and one wire guidance method. The launching mechanism is an air-gun type. The train model for the experiment is the high speed train (Korea Train Express: KTX) and the tested speed is about 300 km/h. The tested train length is 61 em which is corresponding to two units of KTX train. The cross sectional area and weight of train model are 0.00264 $m^2$ and 287 g, respectively. The Reynolds number based on the model train length is $1.2{\times}10^7$. The strength of pressure wave is measured using piezo typed pressure sensor. The measured pick value of pressure was as high as 365 Pa in the shortest gap between the acoustic screen and model train. The measured pressure is well compared with the field test data of mc 779-1 [2] values. However, the experimental data were slightly lower than the mc 779-1 values. The results show the model test can be used as a substitute for the field test.
