  • Due to recent large earthquakes around the world, there are increasing social needs for seismic safety of urban railway infrastructures. Urban railway infrastructures are applied different seismic performance evaluation procedure each of overground structures, underground structures and bridge structures, and the characteristics of urban railway infrastructures are not properly considered in the procedure. This study presents problems in the existing seismic performance evaluation procedure of urban railway infrastructures and proposes necessities of unified evaluation procedure.

  • In order to evaluate the sound transmission loss of a structure, a large reverberation room described by ISO is generally used. ISO test method is however for architectural structures, which is not properly implemented for small mechanical structures, such as rolling stocks. In this paper, evaluation procedure for railway vehicle structures has been proposed.

  • For monitoring of railway structures, optical fiber sensors are very convenient. The fiber sensors are very small and do not disturb the structural properties. They also have several merits such as electro-magnetic immunity, long signal transmission, good accuracy and multiplicity of one sensor line. Strain measurement technologies with fiber optic sensors have been investigated as a part of smart structure. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the monitoring of railway structures. We expect that the fiber optic sensors have much less noises than electrical strain gauges because of electro-magnetic immunity while railways operate electric power of 22000 volts. Fiber optic sensors showed good durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring of the railway structures as well as good response to the structural behaviors during construction.

  • With an increase in rail traffic, developing activities around structures of railway have been expanded. Inevitably, the changes to cross though sub-structures of railway have been getting increased. However, this situation affects on the safe operation of trains. Generated wheel load makes on the result in settlement on roadbed and damages on track materials. Therefore, via the numerical analysis were carried out for the box structure and subground using FEM analysis program called. Visual FEA/Geo 4.19. Parametric studies were performed by changing soil depth above box structure constructed in railway embankment. A standard live load was applied to simulate loads from train. Through this study, a minimum required soil depth above subground box structure was recommended based on deformation and stresses in concrete railway system.

  • There are many railway structures which were designed without conidering aseismic capacity. In special, masonry structures constructed long time ago should be reviewed about their resistance to earthquake. In this paper, technique to evaluate the capacity of masonry railway bridge is tried to develop by means of FEM analysis. In general FEM analysis program, 3-D solid element is used for masonry structures and response spectrum analysis procedure is tried. In addition, 3-D solid element has material properties equivalent to mortar-brick composite body. Used FEM program is ABAQUS-CAE.

  • Constructed structures, before the seismic design codes are established was not designed an earthquake resist. So, evaluate seismic performance of structures and appropriate strengthening are required. To seismic reinforcement of railway structures, literature investigation was conducted about a variety of domestic and international processing enhance and repair the existing maintenance. Also, facilities standardization group, in research group of railway standards, when applied the developed seismic reinforcement system to the railway, conducted the survey that can occur the uniqueness for construction. These specific changes that reflect the seismic reinforcement of the system was required to establish application requirements.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop automated structural design and analysis aided-program of aluminum extrusion carbody structures for railway vehicle. This developed program is possible to perform simultaneously structural design and design verification of aluminum extrusion profiles independent of expertise and experience of design engineers. Design engineers was able to design it using database of existing aluminum extrusion profiles or user-defined function. The design verification was programmed to evaluate its structural integrity according to Korean Railway Safety Law or Urban Transit Safety Law. Also, this program could automatically generate an executable file of various commercial finite element program and CAD files such as stp and iges by GUI environment applications using MFC(Microsoft Foundation Classes). In conclusion, it is expected to contribute to reduce product development time and improve product quality of aluminum extrusion profile and structures in railway industry.

  • This study deals with the damage reinforcement of structures under the ground such as gallery pipes subjected to railway loads. Railway loads with various moving velocities make significant influences on the ground gallery pipes passing through under the railway. For real structures this study analyzes such effects in detail and establishes a method for the efficient damage reinforcement Moreover we predict the hereafter structural behaviors of gallery pipes under the ground by several numerical simulation. The results of this study are expected to offer useful guidelines for explaining the complicated damage characteristics of the ground gallery pipe structures.

  • The thin-plate structure and the box-beam structure are two typical welded structures in railway vehicles. Because of their structure complexity, bigger size and multi-seams, welding residual distortion which occur in welding process bring unfavorable effect on the quality of welding products manufacturing and service. As a result, welding distortion forecasting and control become an important and urgent research topic in railway vehicles. In this paper, three different numerical methods are presented corresponding to three typical types of welded structures of railway vehicles and welding deformation are simulated. Consistence of numerical results and experimental data proves the correctness of models and feasibility of simulation methods.

  • To maintain the primary stage of design, it is not too much to say that drainage systems should has been to maintain the most factor in earthwork structures. The durability of earthwork structures has about over 90 years as like concrete structures and has easily used to construction materials. Even if is a good earthwork materials, it hasn't lose design life at inadequate drainage system. In case of railway was frequently performed a maintenance works after construction 5 years because embankment site hasn't installed a concrete duck. In this study, the drainage standard of railway reviews the technological levels of drainage system by comparing the code for design of railway and road.
