  • The recent environmental protection trend requires more strict energy saving, therefore every transportation system should reduce energy consumption to the minimum value. High-efficiency operation system, energy saving and $CO_2$ emissions shall be addressed as important issue in railway system. These issues are the most essential factors of railway, compared to major public transportation system. Recently, saving energy in the electric railway system has been studied. For such new energy saving, the energy storage system is considered for saving energy. Energy saving is possible by efficient use of regenerated energy. Regenerated energy is recycled amongst vehicles by mean of charge and discharge corresponding to powering and braking of electric vehicle operations. This energy saving contributes to cut $CO_2$ to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling regenerated energy demonstrate significant effect on peak cut of consumption energy in railway substation. Absorption of excess energy avoids regeneration failure due to high traction voltage. Therefore, the energy storage system is needed to be adopted to use regeneration energy when the vehicle is braking.

  • A rapid urbanization has increased the portion of paved layer that results in the change of water circulation system. This change leads to frequent events of flooding, drought, and urban heat island. To resolve these issues, permeable pavement system based on Low Impact Development (LID) concept is being applied to international urban areas. Therefore it is necessary to establish a rational design procedure for the permeable pavement system that reflects our environmental conditions. iDue to inherent characteristics of permeable pavement system, water infiltrates thorough the layers so it may reduce the bearing capacity of sub-layers. In this study, an effort was made to investigate the effectiveness of geogrid reinforced crushed stone subbase layer based on field experimental program along with a limited numerical analysis. It reveals that geogrid reinforced sections improve the bearing capacity by close to 20%. In addition, a light weight deflectomenter (LWDT) appears to be promising for the compaction quality control of crushed stone subbase layer in order to construct qualified permeable pavement systems.

  • As the world energy consumption grows, the interest in marin energy resources is increasing. In excavating such resources, the marine riser which connects the floating structure and sea bed is an essential device. The riser system is often exposed to harsh ocean environment and thus vulnerable to damage. Since the failure of the riser system may cause serious economical loss as well as environmental problem, the structural integrity of the riser is very important. Generally, the riser is an extremely slender structure with a much smaller diameter than a length. Therefore, a structural integrity monitoring methodology for typical buildings and bridges may not be applicable. In this paper, the applicability of a damage identification method for a structure to a marine riser is examined via a numerical example. Also, recent research practices and findings for monitoring the behavior and the structural integrity of the marine riser are examined and summarized.

  • In wireless communication, the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is a well-known approach to improve the reliability as well as the data rate. In MIMO systems, channel state information (CSI) is typically required at the receiver to detect transmitted signals; however, in practical systems, the CSI is imperfect and contains errors, which affect the overall system performance. In this paper, we propose a novel maximum likelihood (ML) scheme for MIMO systems that is robust to the CSI errors. We apply an optimization method to estimate an instantaneous covariance matrix of the CSI errors in order to improve the detection performance. Furthermore, we propose the employment of the list sphere decoding (LSD) scheme to reduce the computational complexity, which is capable of efficiently finding a reduced set of the candidate symbol vectors for the computation of the covariance matrix of the CSI errors. An iterative detection scheme is also proposed to further improve the detection performance.

  • 철도는 도로대비 에너지 소비량 및 온실가스, 오염물질 배출량이 낮은 친환경 수송수단이다. 철도화물의 활성화를 통한 녹색운송시스템 구축을 위해 세계 각국은 다양한 지원정책을 펼치고 있다. 하지만 우리나라의 경우 실질적인 지원방안이 미미한 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 국내외 다양한 국가들의 철도화물 지원을 위한 정책을 비교 분석하여 국내 관련정책 수립에 대한 시사점을 도출하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 위해 영국, 스위스, 독일, 오스트리아, 프랑스, 헝가리, 일본, EU 및 한국을 대상으로 철도화물 활성화를 위한 정책을 5가지의 카테고리로 분류하여 비교분석을 수행하였으며 철도물류관련시설 지원방안, 철도화물수송비용에 대한 직접적 지원 및 도로화물수송에 대한 제한방안에 대한 시사점을 도출하였다.

  • Personal rapid transit (PRT) is getting attention as a new form of transportation. It is energy efficient and provides the high level of passenger service. In this study, the dynamic PRT dispatching and routing problem is dealt with. Passengers request transportation service on a complex network, and an operating system monitors passenger arrivals and coordinates vehicles in real time. A new online dispatching and routing algorithm is proposed, which minimizes the total travel distance of vehicles and the waiting time of passengers. The algorithm dispatches vehicles by considering multiple vehicles' state and multiple passengers at the same time. In particular, finding the shortest-time path is attempted by taking into account the future congestion on lanes. Discrete-event simulation is employed to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show the algorithm in this study outperforms others.

  • The truck that is used as running equipment for tank freight car support is a core structural part that supports the load of the car body and significantly influences the safety of freights and vehicles, as well as their running performance. Running equipment is composed of truck frames, wheels and wheel axles, independent suspensions, and brakes. Among these components, the truck frame supporting the load of the vehicles and freights may be the most important component. This study was carried out to analyze the structure of truck frames and to determine whether they are safe when the maximum vertical load, braking part load, and the front and rear load are applied to truck frames. This was achieved by subjecting the truck frames to stress tests and then measuring the stress on each part. The results of the stress tests showed that truck frames have a safe vehicle load design.

  • In the recent years, various studies have presented stable and economic methods for increased regulations and compliance in sewage treatment plants. In some sewage treatment plants, the effluent concentration exceeded the regulations, or the effluent concentration was manipulated. This indicates that the process is currently inefficient to operate and control sewage treatment plants. The operation and control method of sewage treatment plant is mathematically dealing with a physical and chemical mechanism for the anticipated situation during operation. In addition, there are some limitations, such as situations that are different from the actual sewage treatment plant. Therefore, it is necessary to find a more stable and economical way to enhance the operational and control method. AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology is selected among various methods. There are very few cases of applying and utilizing AI technology in domestic sewage treatment plants. In addition, it failed to define specific definitions of applying AI technologies. The purpose of this study is to present the application of AI technology to domestic sewage treatment plants by comparing and analyzing various cases. This study presented the AI technology algorithm system, verification method, data collection, energy and operating costs as methods of applying AI technology.

  • Trade between Korea and China was 372million dollars accounting for 1.56% of total in 1988 and has been increased to 23,689 million dollars occupying 7% in 1997, which implies 32.2% increase on average per year. This trend will continue dramatically and consistently as China's open policy toward the world accelerates and korean companies advance into chinese market. The main trade routes are with marine transportation between korean west sea area and chinese San-Dong peninsula around east sea. However, due to the increasing traffic congestion on main roads connecting harbors and main consumer cities and capacity problem in west sea harbor areas, the logistics cost have been increased resulting in losing competitiveness of freight trade. Therefore, these road-oriented inland transportation means need to be changed to rail transport system to reduce congestion and to conserve natural environment. To achieve this scheme, efficient intermodal transportation system connecting road and rail should be constructed. These combined system will ensure timely delivery of goods and consequently the customers would make proper transportation schedule for the import/export goods in advance. Especially, combined transportation of Railroad and train ferry would cope with the logistics problem and this system would be efficient means for trade with not only China but further with many adjacent countries in central asia such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
