  • In this paper, the smoke behavior in an underground station on operation of the fans in the ventiliation of the station was measured by the experimental method when the fire occurred in the underground station platform where the platfrom screen door was installed. The ventilation characteristics were compared when the ventilation system was operated and when the ventilation system was not operated when a fire occurred at the platform where the clean door was closed. To simulate the fire smoke, the smoke generated from the smoke generator was heated using a hot air fan. The transmittance was measured using a smoke density meter to quantitatively measure fire smoke. If the screen door is closed and the ventilation system of the underground station does not work, it is confirmed that if a fire occurs in the platform, smoke accumulates inside the platform, evacuating passengers is very difficult and can lead to a very dangerous situation. On the other hand, under the condition that the ventilation facility of the subway station is operated, the smoke evacuates to the outside through the ventilation facility of the underground station, and airflow is formed in the direction from the waiting room to the waiting area, so that the passenger located on the platform can safely evacuate toward the concourse. In the following paper, we will discuss the concurrent effect of tunnel ventilation through tunnel vent near the platform.

  • Accumulated deficits resulting from managing the Korean Railroad and debts from the construction of the KTX (Korea Train Express which is a high-speed rail system) have left the Korean Railroad faced with great troubles. Since it changed into a public corporation Korail on January 1st, 2005, the Korea Railroad has been making unceasing efforts to overcome the troubles and improve its management. However, even these efforts haven't worked in the face of the improved conditions of other transportation methods such as better networks of land roads and air ways. The Korea Railroad had its revenue from its railway transportation limited, and has tried to expand its business to non-transportational areas. In some metropolitan cities, the Korea Railroad made investments in real estate by constructing station buildings based on private money. Yet, in small and medium size cities, the Korea Railroad has little particular strategic projects for business development. Recently certain small and medium size regional cities began to plan on business developments for the ex-railway land, and some small towns have developed real estate on the ex-railway land. Nevertheless, there have been no systematic case studies to classify these real estate developments.

  • This study will observe the following subjects based on the railroad: First, the development of St. Pancreas Station, which is the gateway to London from other Europe continent, and King's Cross Station, which connects all the intercity within London. Second, the planning characteristic of urban regeneration case which was driven from Camden district, the center of King's Cross Central, which is located in between the two stations, St. Pancreas and King's Cross. Third, based on the the two stations and urban regeneration, this study attempts to investigate the direction of urban regenerating plan and its detailed strategy. As a result, King's Cross Station, St. Pancreas Station and the King's Cross Central area, which is an adjacent area from the two stations, were a slum for a long time. However, the two close stations played a role as the United Kindom and London's railroad network by sharing the common denominator of having the international high-speed railway among the Europe continent and being the connection of National railroads within London. Eventually, based on such potential of railroad traffic, King's Cross Central area was newly regenerated. The consequence of this study has shown that not only the physical modernization of buildings, implementation of compact railroad network supporting both ground and underground of each area or traffic connection was organized in London, but also secured the pedestrian way for easier transfer and planned and allocated facilities by considering citizen's publicness and multilateral use.

  • Korean society experienced successive earthquakes exceeding 5.0 magnitude in the past three years resulting in an increasing concern about earthquake stability of urban infrastructures. This study focuses on the significant aspects of earthquake risk assessment for the cut-and-cover underground railway station based on two-dimensional dynamic numerical analysis. Presented are features from a case study performed for the railway station in Seoul, South Korea. The PLAXIS2D was employed for numerical simulation and input of the earthquake ground motion was chosen from Pohang earthquake records (M5.4). The paper shows key aspects of earthquake risk for soil-structure system varying important parameters including embedded depth, supported ground information, and applied seismicity level, and then draws several meaningful conclusions from the analysis results such as seismic risk assessment.

  • This study suggests several ways to improve the railroad facilities in the urban areas so as to maintain the urban railroad facilities and minimize their adverse impact on the roads around the facilities. Environmental problems such as noise and vibration can be minimized by constructing soundproofing walls and improving railway and train systems. To reduce the traffic congestion at the railroad crossings, current at-grade crossings should be changed to separated crossings. Moreover, the criteria by where railroad crossings are located should be revised. In the long term, the land use development for the railroad station and the surrounding areas needs to be changed. Several case studies of Japan's and France's major cities show the potential of successfully integrating the development of railroad facilities and their surrounding areas. In addition, there is a need to .consider institutional aspects, to improve the railroad facilities in the urban areas and to allow the integrated development of the railroad facilities and the surrounding areas.

  • This study analyzed passenger access and egress travel patterns related to a Korean regional railway station (Seoul station), then developed a binomial logit model. This model referred to bus and metro mode of access and egress during a national holiday (Chuseok 2009); obtained from transit smart card data. The results showed that 99% of passengers getting access to, or egress from, the regional railway station did so using less than two transfers, and that most passengers were more likely to choose a metro. However, the passengers that made access or egress trips near Seoul Station were more likely to take a bus. From the results of the mode choice model, it was found that the impact of travel time was greater than that of travel cost, in the choices made for both access and egress. Interestingly, the impact of travel time is much greater in choosing the mode of egress.

  • In Apr. 2004, the 1st phase of Gyeongbu high speed railroad line was opened between Seoul and Busan, and this new high speed railroad service has increased the customers' satisfaction index and railroad passengers' profit. Moreover, at the end of year 2010 the 2nd phase of Gyeongbu high speed railroad line will be open, and the journey time between Seoul and Busan will be shortened and the new high speed railroad service will be expanded to Gyeongju & Ulsan area. This study will introduce the operation of connection service between new stations and downtown to the 2nd phase Gyeongbu high speed railroad station (Gyeongju, Ulsan station), and analyze the effects of connection service using connection demand analysis and also economic effects. This kind of connection service will contribute to the increase of passengers' satisfaction index and high speed railroad revenue.

  • The Yongsan International Business District development work is a 20 billion$ project to raise facilities for national business, trade, residence, and culture. The project site is $566,800m^2$ and it covers the railroad maintenance center and Dongbuichon-dong. Developing railroad station region used to be done by private investment. However, problems existed; simple function as a massive selling market, traffic jam caused by massive market users, inadequacy to transfer to other transportations, interruption of the pedestrian way and separation of zone of life by the station. To solve this problem it is important to consider developing cases of other countries and devise a plan that is applicable to our circumstances. In the study, we compared our station development case with foreign station development cases and analyze the element for the plan what we should consider in our station development. In addition, The results of the study can be used as a preliminary data in the future planning the Yongsan International Business District development.
