  • Successful market adoption of rail freight transport innovations that might offer opportunities for market share increase is the focus of this paper. Firstly, seen from a theoretical point of view, it is not incremental innovations but radical organizational and transformation innovations that are likely to increase the market share of rail freight transport. Secondly, the particular inovations that offer some success potential for market adoption are: dedicated infrastructure, the fixed timetable, locomotive upgrades, and INTERFACE. Thirdly, unfortunately, the opportunities to increase the market share of rail freight transport appear to be limited.

  • The success of road haulage, in dominating the surface movement of freight, is now threatened by increased traffic congestion, falling average motorway speeds and rising in logistic costs. As a result, Government as well as companies, which use or operate logistics service, is now looking to rail to provide an alternative. First, we surveyed the bottlenecks and desired betterments to rail transport, which were indicated by rail and road transport users. Through the analysis of customers' needs survey. this paper is focused in the basic framework fur the rail freight transport, which could be helped to promote the efficiency associated with moving freight by rail.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze traits of transport goods by Rail. Now, many kinds of shipper transports their goods by the Rail. but Rail transport system did not satisfied their requirements. In order to analyze shippers desire, make a marketing strategy for more efficient rail transportation system, make up a questionnaire on transport by rail and analyze by using AHP method.

  • We have the common aim of encouraging freight to be carried by rail rather than by road because there are sufficient environmental, social and public benefits. Thus it is important to lead to freight traveling by rail rather than road and to ensure that freight on rail does not transfer to road. In Korea, taking freight off road and moving it by rail is more expensive from a point of total transport costs. Hence this paper is focused in the improvement methods for the rail freight transport which could be helped to promote the efficiency associated with moving freight by rail.

  • These days, environment has became more and more important global issues including Climate Change Convention which 40 developed countries have to decrease CO2 emission by 5.2% compared with 1990 emission. Rail transport in Korea are becoming more important as a solution for environment and energy owing to high energy consumption country. Rail transport is environment-friendly mode compared with truck mode (energy consumption 14.2 times, CO2 emission 13.4 times), but it has door-to-door problem and "DMT transport system for rail logistics" can be a solution for this problem and this system can lead to environment-friendly transport mode by rail. This study will review the background of worldwide and Korean DMT system, customers' needs, and analyze transport cost with other transport mode. Through theses kinds of review and analysis, this study will propose DMT terminal, DMT rolling stock, and DMT operation system.

  • Major nations undergone grand national strategy regarding Eurasia such as China's One Belt and One Road Strategy and Korea's Eurasia Initiative owing to Eurasia's regional importance. Korea's Eurasia Initiative aims to make one continental, creative continental, peaceful continental with intra-Eurasian nations as grand national strategy is based on creative economy, undertaken by President Park's Government for the future of Eurasia after the Northeast Asian logistics hub strategy. Eurasia Initiative includes logistics network project as an important one which consists of Eurasia Friendly Express, Rajin-Hassan logistics project, the Arctic Ocean route project and Rail transport network project. The success of Eurasia Initiative depends on North Korea. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the improvement of prompt logistics network by networking main rail transport and other transports such as inland waterway transport and air transport by studying the current situation of Eurasia Express project, including rail transport network and the efficient methods of Eurasia logistics. The efficient methods of rail transport network under the Eurasia initiative are construction of multimodal logistics network connected with rail, international cooperation for logistics standardization in Eurasia, Eurasia nations' subscription of logistics-related conventions and projects performance based on these conventions, etc.

  • There are a close relationship between natural disasters and train safety. So it is very important to guaranty train safety using reasonable rail-transport operation control against disasters. Therefore, based on the past record of rainfall at failure, rail-transport operation control for railway embankment under rainfall was set up. After slope check list at home and abroad had been analyzed, new slope check list was suggested and site investigations were carried out using this check list. In order to evaluate the stability of railway slopes under rainfall, explanatory variables and subordinate variables were selected for multi-variate analysis and critical rainfall was defined by statistical process. Rail-transport operation control including regional and geological properties was suggested by analyzing the critical rainfall and rail-transport operation control in other country, and this will be a good tool to control train speed under rainfall and to secure train safety.

  • This paper sets out what can be said in general about pricing within transport sectors. In this paper we briefly restate the economic principles of pricing that hold for two transport sectors-road and rail. This is used as a basis for a discussion of pricing principles in the transport sector. Here we focus on the pricing of user charges of transport infrastructures. We start this paper to analyse road transport sector and compare it with rail sector. In fact as a result of the trend towards rail reform, the issue of charging mechanisms for the use of rail infrastructure has become increasingly important. In this paper, we just take the problem in theory and present some foreign cases. But our long-run objective will be the design of efficient user charges of infrastructures based on fair intermodal competition.

  • KORAIL's Rail freight tonnage approximately 39 million tons in 2010, coal transportation thereof approximately 6.2 million tons, it is about 15.7 percent in the entire railway transportation. In addition, the incomes of rail transport of coal is 51.7 billion won which is about 15.8 percent of total. It is the third largest proportion of tonnage and profit on rail freight items. However, the percentage of rail transport of coal has been decreased by the government policies to reduce the production of anthracite and to supply non-thermal power anthracite preferentially which depends on truck transport. Such reasons effect to transport incomes of stations located in Gangwon province which handle coal transport a lot. Accordingly, this study tries to explicate the fundamental problems and find solution for stations to maintain its incomes.

  • This paper deals with the evaluation of environmental impact of rail and road transport in South Korea. A framework of energy input-output analysis is employed to estimate the total energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission in acquiring and using a life cycle of passenger and freight transport activity. The reliability of $CO_2$ emission based on uncertainty values is assessed by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that on a passenger-kilometers basis, passenger roads have life cycle emissions about 1.5 times those of rail, while that ratio is ten times greater when the scope of evaluation regards the tailpipe. In the case of freight transport, on a million ton-kilometers basis, the value for road mode is estimated to be about three times compared to those of rail mode. The results also show that the main contribution of $CO_2$ emission for road transport is the operation stage, accounting for 70%; however, the main contribution for rail transport is the construction and supply chain stage, accounting for over 50% emission.
