We developed an ultra low background gamma ray spectrometer particularly suitable for experiment which require lower detection limit. The background of a germanium spectrometer is suppressed by applying active and passive shielding technique at the same time. The active shielding devices consist of plastic scintillating plates of 50 mm thick and anti-coincidence electronic system. The shielding is made of 150 mm thick walls of very low activity lead,20 mm with activity of <10 Bq/kg and 130 mm with activity of <50 Bq/kg. The observed background count rates are 1.2 $s^{-1}$ and 0.36 $s^{-1}$ without and with the active shielding, respectively, overall the energy regions from 30 keV to 3 MeV The cosmic ray induced background is suppressed by a rate of 0.8 $s^{-1}$ at the present work. The detection efficiency curve necessary to obtain the radioactivity of environmental samples has been precisely determined on the energy regions from 80 to 2000 keV with a 10$^3$ ml marinelli beaker sample, consisting of the calibrated radionuclides $^{109}$ Cd, $^{57}$ CO, $^{139}$ Ce, $^{203}$ Hg, $^{113}$ Sn, $^{85}$Sr, $^{137}$ Cs, $^{60}$ Co and $^{88}$ Y. Virtues Of the method are demonstrated by measuring the activity of $^{137}$ Cs contained in the powdered milk.
This study evaluated the activation of the shielding wall and the components around the accelerator by using the medical linear accelerator. We performed simulations for energy values of 20 MV with the operating time ranging from day 1 to 30 years, and linear accelerator head and shielding wall concrete were also evaluated. The results showed that neutrons in large quantities were analyzed using high energy around thetarget point where photons were formed. Based on the activation analysis with these results, radioactivity increased with an increase in operation time and activated nuclides usually start saturating in10 years. Furthermore, the general types of nuclides formed owingto the activation were Co-60, W-181, 185, 187, Na-24, Ca-45, Mn-54, 56, and Fe-55, 59.

In order to decommission the shielding concrete of KRR(Korea Research Reactor) -1&2, it must be exactly determined activated level and range by neutron irradiation during operation. To determine the activated level and range, it must be sampled and analyzed the core sample. But, there are difficulties in sample preparation and determination of the measurement efficiency by self-absorption. In the study, the full energy efficiency of the HPGe detector was compared with the measured value using standard source and the calculated one using Monte Carlo simulation. Also. self-absorption effects due to the density and component change of the concrete were calculated using the Monte Carlo method. Its results will be used radioactivity analysis of the real concrete core sample in the future.

This work investigated the most suitable type of degrader (Cu, Al or Nb) and its thickness, taking into consideration the salient aspects of concrete activation for high-purity 89Zr production by 89Y(p,n)89Zr nuclear reaction. The MCNP and FISPACT codes were used to determine the optimal degrader thickness and the radioactivity of shielding concrete by neutron activation, respectively. The results showed that the optimal thickness of the beam degraders was 1.16, 3.19, and 1.33 mm for Cu, Al, and Nb, respectively. The neutron production rate per proton and the energy and angular distributions of neutrons varied depending on the type of degrader. Considering the radioactivity of the target-room concrete and the amount of radioactive waste expected to be generated, the use of a 1.33-mm-thick Nb degrader for 89Zr production was determined to be the best choice.

In recent years, various types of industrial wastes are rapidly increasing with the development of high-tech industries. Specially, high-density waste glass of CRT TV containing heavy metals are buried or disposed of due to reprocessing costs and environmental pollution problems. Thus, more basic research is needed to recycle waste such as CRT waste glass such. In this study, the fundamental properties and radiation shielding performance of mortar specimens substituted CRT waste glass as a fine aggregate were analyzed and their application to shielding materials was evaluated. According to the results, the bulk density of mortar specimen replaced with CRT waste glass was increased and the compressive strength and flexural strength were decreased. Meanwhile, the CRT waste glass substitute specimen containing a large amount of lead component showed a higher shielding performance than the general mortar specimen. Especially, the linear attenuation coefficient of CRT waste glass in $122KeV{\cdot}^{57}Co$ of the low energy field was 2.5 times higher than that of normal specimen.
This study is a neutron activation for concrete that shields medical linear accelerator facilities. Comparison of general concrete and low activation concrete. The simulation method was simulated using MCNPX (Ver. 2.5.0) and FISPACT-2010, and the shielding ability for photon and neutron beams was calculated and neutron activation evaluation was carried out. As a result, the shielding capacity was 20 ~ 50 cm efficient in general concrete, and activate evaluation in low activation concrete was calculated to be low in radioactivity concrete, but all were estimated to not exceed their own allowable concentration in self - disposal. As a result of the comprehensive analysis, it is considered effective to use ordinary concrete.
In the case of nuclear medicine practitioners in medical institutions, a wide range of exposure dose to individual workers can be found, depending on the type of source, the amount of radioactivity, and the use of shielding devices in handling radioactive isotopes. In this regard, this study evaluated the organ dose on practitioners as well as the dose reduction effect of the L-block shielding device in handling the diagnostic radiation source through the simulation based on the Monte Carlo method. As a result, the distribution of organ dose was found to be higher as the position of the radiation source was closer to the handling position of a practitioner, and the effective dose distribution was different according to the ICRP tissue weight. Furthermore, the dose reduction effect according to the L-block thickness tended to decrease, which showed the exponential distribution, as the shielding thickness increased. The dose reduction effect according to each radiation source showed a low shielding effect in proportion to the emitted gamma ray energy level.
Korea expects a shortage in storage capacity for spent fuels at reactor sites. Therefore, a need for more metal and/or concrete casks for storage systems is anticipated for either the reactor site or away from the reactor for interim storage. For the purpose of interim storage and transportation, a dual purpose metal cask that can load 21 spent fuel assemblies is being developed by Korea Radioactive Waste Management Corporation (KRMC) in Korea. At first the gamma and neutron flux for the design basis fuel were determined assuming in-core environment (the temperature, pressure, etc. of the moderator, boron, cladding, $UO_2$ pellets) in which the design basis fuel is loaded, as input data. The evaluation simulated burnup up to 45,000 MWD/MTU and decay during ten years of cooling using the SAS2H/OGIGEN-S module of the SCALE5.1 system. The results from the source term evaluation were used as input data for the final shielding evaluation utilizing the MCNP Code, which yielded the effective dose rate. The design of the cask is based on the safety requirements for normal storage conditions under 10 CFR Part 72. A radiation shielding analysis of the metal storage cask optimized for loading 21 design basis fuels was performed for two cases; one for a single cask and the other for a $2{\times}10$ cask array. For the single cask, dose rates at the external surface of the metal cask, 1m and 2m away from the cask surface, were evaluated. For the $2{\times}10$ cask array, dose rates at the center point of the array and at the center of the casks' height were evaluated. The results of the shielding analysis for the single cask show that dose rates were considerably higher at the lower side (from the bottom of the cask to the bottom of the neutron shielding) of the cask, at over 2mSv/hr at the external surface of the cask. However, this is not considered to be a significant issue since additional shielding will be installed at the storage facility. The shielding analysis results for the $2{\times}10$ cask array showed exponential decrease with distance off the sources. The controlled area boundary was calculated to be approximately 280m from the array, with a dose rate of 25mrem/yr. Actual dose rates within the controlled area boundary will be lower than 25mrem/yr, due to the decay of radioactivity of spent fuel in storage.

The object of this study was to evaluate the separation distance from a temporary storage facility satisfying the dose criteria. The calculation of ambient dose rates took into account cover soil thickness, facility size, and facility type by using MCNPX code. Shielding effects of cover soil were 68.9%, 96.9% and 99.7% at 10 cm, 30 cm and 50 cm respectively. The on-ground type of storage facility had the highest ambient dose rate, followed by the semi-ground type and the underground type. The ambient dose rate did not vary with facility size (except $5{\times}5{\times}2m\;size$) due to the self-shielding of decontamination waste in temporary storage. The separation distances without cover soil for a $50{\times}50{\times}2m\;size$ facility were evaluated as 14 m (minimum radioactivity concentration), 33 m (most probably radioactivity concentration), and 57 m (maximum radioactivity concentration) for on-ground storage type, 9 m, 24 m, and 45 m for semi-underground storage type, and 6 m, 16 m, and 31 m for underground storage type.
A convenient method of $^{99m}Tc$-methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK) extraction technique was developed and a mobile $^{99m}Tc$-extraction generator was designed. The MEK extraction and the phase separation of $^{99m}TcO^-{_4}$ were carried out with a simple procedure in the same container. The shielding of $^{99}Mo$ radioactivity was made with one lead container. The system was simplified by shielding $^{99m}TcO_4{^-}({\gamma}_e=0.14\;MeV)$ separately. $^{99m}TcO^-{_4}\;in\;^{99m}Tc-MEK$ extract was recovered by adsorption and elution only, and therefore, the possibility of volatilization was reduced. The volume of $^{99m}TcO^{-}{_4}$-saline product was reduced to 1 ml by using a small alumina column and the column operation time was shortened. The separation time of $^{99m}Tc$ was reduced to 30 minutes, and the operation was carried out at the outside of the shielding. The system was designed to operate under the condition of bacteria-free.
