  • We probe the feasibility of high-frequency radio observations of very rapid flux variations in compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our study assumes observations at 230 GHz with a small 6-meter class observatory, using the SNU Radio Astronomical Observatory (SRAO) as example. We find that 33 radio-bright sources are observable with signal-to-noise ratios larger than ten. We derive statistical detection limits via exhaustive Monte Carlo simulations assuming (a) periodic, and (b) episodic flaring flux variations on time-scales as small as tens of minutes. We conclude that a wide range of flux variations is observable. This makes high-frequency radio observations - even with small observatories - a powerful probe of AGN intra-day variability; especially, those observations complement observations at lower radio frequencies with larger observatories like the Korean VLBI Network (KVN).

  • In this paper, we propose a Radio over Fiber system for small cell applications and for mobile fronthaul networks supporting cloud-radio access networks(RAN). We built a system with a downlink employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques and an uplink using single carrier-frequency multiple access(SC-FDMA). System parameters are evaluated for various subcarrier modulations and the results of link performance measurements are analyzed.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel signaling method using chirp signals in UWB radio with satisfaction of FCC regulation. Chirp signals have been used in many ranging systems such as radar because of its good correlation properties. Because it is important to use broader signal bandwidth in order to get higher precision of the ranging, according to the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound, UWB radio is extremely good as the ranging systems. But, it is very difficult to apply existing chirp signals to UWB, because FCC regulates that the systems operating in UWB radio must occupy signal bandwidth more than 500MHz on the condition of stopping the frequency sweeping. So, we propose multiple chirp signals which can satisfy the regulation of FCC while maintaining chirp signal's properties. The multiple chirp signals which are composed of the sub-chirps modulated by sub-carriers can expand the signal bandwidth with the same principle of OFDM systems. The simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed multiple chirp signals is identical to that of conventional OFDM when it is applied to data communication, and that the correlation properties of the proposed signals are almost the same with properties as those of single chirp signals whose sweeping bandwidth is the same value with the proposed one.

  • How to observe the atmosphere is a subject of atmospheric research. The meteorological satellites and the ground states are used to do observation. However, both ways do not satisfy the requirement of scientists, especially the profiles of atmosphere on the ocean and the data for global atmosphere. Radio occultation (RO) technique, which has been used in planet science, is a method to solve the problem. In RO technique, the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite receives the two frequency signal of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite. The excess phase of the signal is calculated to retrieve the profiles of atmosphere parameters. In moist troposphere, the fluctuations appear in the phase of the signal and open loop (OL) is used to resolve it. The quality of the GPS signal generally deteriorates as the altitude decreases. In the procedure, the SNR of the GPS signal is used as the criterion. However, the SNR decreases with fluctuation which makes it difficult to locate the data of poor quality. In this paper, the phase of the signal will be used as part of the criterion.

  • This paper presents the design of a frequency measurement device using ADC, EP2AGX FPGA and STM32 processor to accurately measure the frequency of a broadband high frequency signal. The ADC device used in this paper has a sampling frequency of 250 MSPS and a processing frequency bandwidth of 100 MHz. Due to its high sampling frequency, it is difficult to process in ordinary computers or processors, so we implemented the frequency measurement algorithm using the Altra EP2AGX FPGA. The measured frequency is sent to the direction detection controller in real time and fused with the phase signal to calculate the incident azimuth angle of the high frequency signal. The designed frequency measurement device is about 0.2 Mhz in frequency measurement error and 30% less than Anaren DFD-x, which is considered to contribute greatly to the design of radio monitoring and direction detection device.

  • In this paper, as one of countermeasure techniques for a frequency selective fading, an adaptive analog slope equalizer(ASE) applicable to 64-QAM digital radio relay system is presented in terms of principle, implementation, and its performance. Also interference of cross-talk between I- and Q-channel caused by a fiequency selective lading has been analyzed by doing channel model in the baseband, which make it possible to derive the solution for implementing ASE in If-band. The effects of signal for the faded channel are investigated in the time and the frequency domains, respectively, with/without ASE. As system performance, it is shown that the signature is improved up to 6.2 dB at the edge of signal bandwidth for a given BER 10$\^$-3/.

  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate the performance of a pilot signal detection algorithm based on fast Fourier transform (FFT) for several system parameters in order to detect advanced television system committee digital television (ATSC DTV) signals. Requirements for detecting DTV signals are analyzed. And the detection performance is compared according to sensing frequency and time. Form the simulation results, it is confirmed that the signal detection performance increases as the sensing frequency rises. The results of this paper can be applied for implementing cognitive radio (CR) systems in the frequency band of DTV signals.

  • In this paper, we discuss the transmit power of user in Cognitive Radio environment. Transmit power of user should be operated in order not to give a bad effect to PU(Primary user) and this power can be considered as SINR(Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio) measured in PU. Exact spectrum sensing is required to see which is the vacant frequency. And this spectrum sensing should be operated repeatedly within certain time because the vacant frequency is time-varying. In this paper, we reduce the existing defect by using orthogonal parameter and show the sensing operation is possible if SINR of PU can be guaranteed.

  • This paper presents a new Kurtosis driven Variable Step-Size Normalized Least Mean Square (KVSSN-LMS) algorithm to prevent repeater from oscillation due to feedback signal of radio frequency (RF) repeater. To get better Mean Square Error (MSE) performance, step-size is adjusted using the kurtosis. The proposed algorithm shows the better performance of steady state MSE. The proposed algorithm shows a better ERLE performance than that of KVSS-LMS, VSS-NLMS, NLMS algorithms.

  • A new methodology is presented to diagnose faults in equipment plasma. This is accomplished by using neural networks as a pattern recognizer of radio frequency(rf) impedance match data. Using a realtime match monitor system, the match data were collected. The monitor system consisted mainly of a multifunction board and a signal flow diagram coded by Visual Designer. Plasma anomaly was effectively represented by electrical match positions. Twenty sets of fault-symptom patterns were experimentally simulated with experimental variations in process factors, which include rf source power, pressure, Ar and O$_2$ flow rates. As the inputs to neural networks, two means and standard deviations of positions were used ...
