  • Western redcedar timber, 26 by 26cm in cross section and by 200cm long, was dried in a laboratory radio-frequency/vacuum kiln under 65torr of ambient pressure and a fixed frequency of 6.78MHz for the potential rapidly dry large timber. All process data were collected and saved in a computer through a data acquisition system. The temperature in the middle of timber was higher than temperature at the quarter point of timber length and thickness. Temperature gradients developed in the longitudinal and transverse direction of timber. The pressure in the middle of timber was higher than pressure at the quarter point of timber length. The pressure in the middle of timber was lower in the early stage of drying, and higher in the latter stage of drying than pressure at the quarter point of timber thickness. Power density was very highest during heating period and then gradually decreased. The drying curve was approximately linear and the total drying time was 27 hours from an initial moisture content(MC) of 48.6 percent to a final Me of 19.2 percent with only a few mild internal checks in the middle location of timber.

  • This study was carried out to investigate a radio-frequency/vacuum (RF/V) drying ability and physical properties of the green boards and the pre-kiln dried boards with 40 mm thickness, and the 70 mm-thick green board of Iroko (Milicia excelsa). The major results were summarized as follows; The drying time from initial moisture content (MC) of 110% to approximate 6% MC for a 40mm-thick green board was 192 hours, and about 200 hours for the 70 mm-thick green board, respectively and so the RF/V drying times were dramatically shortened compared to conventional kiln drying time. The case hardenings at the RF/V drying completion stage test were very negligible, thus represented almost no existence of the residual stress. The checks were very slightly formed on all of the boards during the RF/V drying test, but crook appeared quite severely. During the accelerating test, the water-resistant treated specimens had not experienced any signs of checking occurred, whereas the control boards had encountered very frequent occurrences of end checking and slight surface checking. There were no observations of warping and discoloring regardless of the treatment.

  • There exists strong evidence supporting the co-evolution of central supermassive black holes and their host galaxies; however it is still under debate how such a relation comes about and whether it is relevant for all or only a subset of galaxies. An important mechanism connecting AGN to their host galaxies is AGN feedback, potentially heating up or even expelling gas from galaxies. AGN feedback may hence be responsible for the eventual quenching of star formation and halting of galaxy growth. A rich multi-wavelength dataset ranging from the X-ray regime (Chandra), to far-IR (Herschel), and radio (WSRT) is available for the North Ecliptic Pole field, most notably surveyed by the AKARI infrared space telescope, covering a total area on the sky of 5.4 sq. degrees. We investigate the star formation properties and possible signatures of radio feedback mechanisms in the host galaxies of 237 radio sources below redshift z = 2 and at a radio 1.4 GHz flux density limit of 0.1 mJy. Using broadband SED modelling, the nuclear and host galaxy components of these sources are studied simultaneously as a function of their radio luminosity. Here we present results concerning the AGN content of the radio sources in this field, while also offering evidence showcasing a link between AGN activity and host galaxy star formation. In particular, we show results supporting a maintenance type of feedback from powerful radio-jets.

  • The current study investigated distributional properties of the Korean Accentual Phrase and their implication to word segmentation. The properties examined were the frequency of various AP tonal patterns, the types of tonal patterns that are imposed upon content words, and the average number and temporal location of content words within the AP. A total of 414 sentences from the Read speech corpus and the Radio corpus were used for the data analysis. The results showed that the 84% of the APs contained one content word, and that almost 90% of the content words are located in AP-initial position. When the AP-initial onset was not an aspirated or tense consonant, the most common AP patterns were LH, LHH, and LHLH (78%), and 88% of the multisyllabic content words start with a rising tone in AP-initial position. When the AP-initial onset was an aspirated or tense consonant, the most common AP patterns were HH, HHLH, and HHL (72%), and 74% of the multisyllabic content words start with a level H tone in AP-initial position. The data further showed that 84.1% of APs end with the final H tone. The findings provide valuable information about the prosodic pattern and structure of Korean APs, and account for the results of a previous study which showed that Korean listeners are sensitive to AP-initial rising and AP-final high tones (Kim, 2007). This is in line with other cross-linguistic research which has revealed the correlation between prosodic probability and speech processing strategy.

  • On-line monitoring of fresh tomato paste processing was done using two radio frequency (RF) sensors resonant at 85 and 110 MHz. Fresh tomato juice with soluble solid content of about $5^{\circ}Brix$ was evaporated up to $23^{\circ}Brix$ and diluted down to about $5^{\circ}Brix$ again with a pilot scale evaporator. The RF sensors were installed in a processing pipe and monitored. The pastes at a specific $^{\circ}Brix$ level were sampled and analyzed for physical properties such as soluble solid content and viscosity. The relationships between sensor outputs and measured physical properties were analyzed. Analysis results showed RF sensor is feasible to apply on-line monitoring of tomato paste processing.

  • This study started from the consciousness that the community media practice studies have been confined to the traditional terrestrial broadcasting. The following research results and implications were obtained by analyzing Daedeok-valley Radio's case to elucidate characteristics of online-based community media and content production and distribution characteristics neglected in previous researches. First, online community media activities are civic/citizen media activities that capture the value of local communities, and this locality is realized through media content production and its online distribution. Second, contents of online community media link members of the community, and individuals become nodes, interacting both online and offline. Therefore, online-based citizen media activities can be utilized effectively as a means to enhance civic participation and to achieve the locality of community in online and offline spaces depending on strategies for online contents production and distribution. Utilizing online infrastructures for media content creation and distribution in Korea demonstrates potential opportunities of local online media to be considered as niche media that can increase its own sustainability.

  • With the advent of ubiquitous environments, the smart phone has come into wide use and the demand for various content increases. Thus, in order to efficiently utilize limited resources cognitive radio technology is regarded as a possible solution. Besides spectrum sensing or access schemes, the provision of VoIP traffic service for secondary users with limited spectrum resources is a very important issue. In this paper, a resource allocation and control system for VoIP QoS provision in cognitive radio networks is proposed. Firstly, as the system model, the time structure of the network is addressed and, according to the structure, a bandwidth broker is proposed. In addition, based on available bandwidth estimated by the bandwidth broker, a connection admission control for secondary users is developed. It is demonstrated that the provision of VoIP QoS is greatly affected by channel utilization, the number of channels, and the length of timeslot.

  • The stowage effects of Satsuma mandarin(Citrus unshiu Marc. var. miyagawa) were investigated by selecting various pretreatmnents; non-tested, wax-coating, paper packaging, 0.02mm cryovac film packaging. Weight loss of film packaging was the lowest among that of others, but decay radio was increased highly at late stages of storage. Soluble solids, moisture content of peel and total sugar were maintained almost constant, but acid content, vitamin C and firmness were reduced gradually during storage at room temperature. For 100 days storage, losses from weight and decay of ton-treated, paper packaging, wax-coating and film packaging were 15.9%, 18.5%, 17.4% and 12.9%, respectively. Acid content was decreased loom 1.28% to 0.81∼0.91% after 100 days storage. Ethylene evolution was increased in a degree after 65 days storage, and the amount was increased repidly afer 115 days. it seemed to be derived from decayed fruits and physiological activities. CO2 content of inner part of fruits was increased between 40∼100 days after storage. Optimum storage period of early variety of Satuma mandarin was regarded for 100days on the basis of appeareance and taste.
