  • In this study, the thermal neutron effects on optical fiber are examined theoretically. Also, the induced loss by thermal neutron irradiation in optical fibers is measured at the optical wavelengths of 0.85 and 1.3\ulcorner, respectively, and the results are analyzed. Thermal neutrons cause nuclear reaction with fiber compositions. So secondary ionizing radiations of high energy are generated. Color centers formed by these secondary ionizing rasiations increase transmission loss of optical fiber by absorbing propagating light in fiber core. As a result of experiment, owing to Ge, P, and B doping effects, the induced loss in multimode fibers has been 5 tmes larger than that in single mode fibers at 1.3 \ulcorner wavelengh. In case of multimode fibers, the loss at 0.8 \ulcorner wavelength region more suceptible for radiations has been twice higher than at 1.3\ulcorner.

  • In order to study the X-ray radiations from solar type strong interacting binary stars, we have collected X-ray data of 44i Bootis (P=0.2678 days, SP=G2+G2) from the EXOSAT data archive. Preliminarly analysis of a part of these data has been already reported by Vilhu & Heise (1986). In this paper, however, we present a more complete light curve in LE region than the previous work, and some unpublished X-ray light curves and spectrums. Using these new materials a new attempt to find the physical explanation about. some observational characteristic figures in the X-ray light curves and spectrums has been made.

  • Astronauts are constantly exposed to space radiation at a low-dose rate during long-tenn stays in space. Therefore, it is important to determine correctly the biological effects of space radiation on human health. Space radiations contain various kinds of different energy particles, especially high linear energy transfer (LET) particles. Therefore, we have to study the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of space radiation under microgravity environment which may change RBE from a stress for cells. Furthermore, the research about space radiation might give us useful information about birth and evolution of life on the earth. We also can realize the importance of preventing the ozone layer from depletion by use of exposure equipment to sunlight at International Space Station (ISS).

  • The peripheral dose, defined as the dose outside therapeutic photon fields, which is responsible for the functional damage of the critical organs, fetus, and radiation. induced carcinogenesis, has been investigated for $^{60}Co\;\gamma$ ray and 10 MV Xray. It was measured by silicon diode controlled by semiautomated water phantom without any shielding or with lead plate of HVL thickness put horizontally or vertically to shield stray radiations. Authors could obtain following results. 1. The peripheral dose was larger than $0.7\%$ of central axis maximum dose even at 20cm distance from field margin. That is clinically significant, so it should be reduced. 2. Even for square fields of 10 MV Xray, radial peripheral dose distribution did not coincide with transverse distribution, because of the position of collimator jaws. 3. Between surface and $d_m$, the peripheral dose distributions show a pattern of the dose distribution of electron beams and the maximum doss was approximately proportional to the length of a side of square field. 4. The peripheral doses depended on radiation quality, field size, distance from field margin and depth in water. Distance from field margin was the most important factor. 5. Except for near surface, the peripheral dose from phantom was approximately equal to that from therapy unit. 6. To reduce the surface dose outside fields, therapist should shield stray radiations from therapy unit by lead plate of at least one HVL for 10 MV X-ray and by bolus equivalent to tissue of 0.5cm thickness for $^{60}Co$. 7. To reduce the dose at depth deeper than $d_m$, it is desirable to shield stray radiations from therapy unit by lead.

  • Space is full of energetic events emitting high-energy radiations which may be fatal to all living things unless protected. The present paper briefly describes high-energy photons and particles incident on Earth surface and their common properties toward living things. Role of radiation played in evolution of life and earth environment will be presented.

  • Quiescent solar radiation, at microwave spectral regime, is dominated by gyroresonant and thermal Bremsstrahlung radiations from hot electrons residing in solar active region corona. These radiations are known to provide excellent diagnostics on the coronal temperature, density, and magnetic field, provided that spatially resolved spectra are available from observations. In this paper we present an imaging spectroscopy implemented for a bipolar active region, AR 7912, using the multifrequency interferometric data from the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA), as processed with a new imaging technique, so-called Spatio-Spectral Maximum Entropy Method (SSMEM). From the microwave maps at 26 frequencies in the range of 1.2-12.4 GHz at both right- and left-circular polarizations, we construct spatially resolved brightness spectra in every reconstructed pixel of about 2 arcsec interval. These spectra allowed us to determine 2-D distribution of electron temperature, magnetic field of coronal base, and emission measure at the coronal base above the active region. We briefly compare the present result with existing studies of the coronal active regions.
