  • International Standardization in all technical area is gaining its momentum as its impact and implication over global trade is directly linked. The worldwide competition to secure a dominant position in the standardization process is ever growing over the years. In 2005, the International Technical Committee on Nuclear Instrumentation, which is a subunit of International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), was held in Korea under the auspices of MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology). Korea has adopted its Rule and Regulation as the National Standard. As a part of a link to National Mid-and Long-term Atomic Energy R&D Program of MOST, the technical development of a performance test for the radiation monitors was carried out under mechanical environment and electromagnetic immunity conditions. The characteristics of the radiation fields were also evaluated under the conditions and introduced to a techniques of performance test for the radiation protection instrumentation adopted IEC61526 standards and it's results was analyzed. We would like to share the experience gained in these efforts, failure as well as success, and to discuss the problems encountered and serious consideration to be taken into account in the future endeavor.

  • The necessity of radiation dosimeter with precise measurement of radiation dose is increased and required in the field of spacecraft, radiotheraphy hospital, atomic plant facility, etc. where radiation exists. Until now, a low power commercial metal-oxide semiconductor(MOS) transistor has been tested as a gamma radiation dosimeter. The measurement error between the actual value and the measurement one can occur since the MOSFET(MOS field-effect transistor) dosimeter, which is now being used, has two gates with same width. The measurement value of dosimeter depends on the variation of threshold voltage, which can be affected by the environment such as temperature. In this paper, a radiation dosimeter having a pair of MOSFET is designed in the same silicon substrate, in which each of the MOSFETs is operable in a bias mode and a test mode. It can measure the radiation dose by the difference between the threshold voltages regardless of the variation of temperature.

  • This experimental study was carried out to evaluate effect of the radiation heat flux for the pool and spill fire in petroleum storage tanks, which were made form steel. Each of them had the capacity of 250, 2500 and 25000 liter, respectively. The effects of the radiation heat flux are as follows; 1) The intensity of radiation heat flux from a flame decreased exponentially with increasing distance from outside wall of tanks, and increased significantly with surface area of tank and dyke. 2) In the case of 25000L tank, the radiation heat flux was about max. 98.9kW/$m^2$ in 1m from wall of tank. 3) The distance, that was able to ignite wood or plastics by radiation heat flux of approximately 12.5kW/$m^2$, was about 3.14m from wall of 25000L tank.

  • In the present study, we developed virtual reality education contents for radiation generator on radiation education field. The radiation generator was divided by module and even the X-ray exposure part was manufactured in detail for designing 3D models. The mechanical details of the X-ray exposure part, the function of adjusting field size of the X-ray, the function of moving the exposure part, and the demonstrating the principle of the X-ray tube were applied. For developing VR contents, the Unreal Engine was used. To evaluate the usefulness of virtual reality content, we used t-test by SPSS. The group used the simulator showed significantly higher levels of understanding of X-ray generation, X-ray irradiation unit composition, irradiation field size adjustment, irradiation unit position adjustment, and overall composition and function. We believe that this VR contents will be used well with radiation safe environment.

  • Evidence suggests that even low-dose irradiation can lead to progressive cognitive decline and memory deficits, which implicates, in part, hippocampal dysfunction in both humans and experimental animals. This study examined whether diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) could attenuate memory impairment, using passive avoidance and object recognition test, and suppression of hippocampal neurogenesis, using the TUNEL assay and immunohistochemical detection with markers of neurogenesis (Kiel 67 (Ki-67) and doublecortin (DCX)) in adult mice treated with gamma radiation (0.5 or 2 Gy). DDC was administered intraperitonially at a dosage of 1,000 $mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ of body weight at 30 min. before irradiation. In passive avoidance and object recognition memory test, the mice, trained for 1 day after acute irradiation (2 Gy) showed significant memory deficits compared with the sham controls. The number of TUNEL-positive apoptotic nuclei in the dentate gyrus (DG) was increased 12 h after irradiation. In addition, the number of Ki-67- and DCX-positive cells were significantly decreased. DDC treatment prior to irradiation attenuated the memory defect, and blocked the apoptotic death. DDC may attenuate memory defect in a relatively low-dose exposure of radiation in adult mice, possibly by inhibiting a detrimental effect of irradiation on hippocampal neurogenesis.

  • To estimate the rate of noise contribution caused in each part of a vehicle in the course of a pass-by noise test. researches precedent have been made to study characteristics of nearby radiation noise measured on both sides of cars in a stationary state. With different revolutions per minute of engine. 2.800rpm and 3.200rpm respectively, in the measurement area of pass-by noise, the experiments have been conducted 7.5 meters away from the central axis of the test vehicle to study direction radiation according to frequencies. The results can be applied to reduce vehicle noise.

  • A hot water layer (HWL hereinafter) was installed at the depth of 1.2 m from the pool surface to reduce the radiation level at the pool top. After the HWL system was improved by the replacement of the filter with the Ion Exchanger to capture the Na-24, to purify the pool water of HWL and finally to reduce the radiation at the pool top. It was confirmed by the performance test of the pump and the measurement of the pressure difference through the Ion Exchanger and the strainer, that the flow characteristics of HWL system was not adversely affected after the system modification. Also the flow analysis using the pressure loss coefficients of the Ion Exchanger and strainer, calculated by the Darcy formula, could predict the flow variations by pressure changes within $10\%$ error in comparison with the field test results. It was also confirmed that HWL was maintained with the depth of 1.2 m from the pool surface because each electric water heater was electrically and thermodynamically maintained at 30 kW and the temperature of HWL was maintained with $5^{\circ}C$ higher temperature than that of pool water. Finally, it was confirmed that the pool top radiation was saturated and stabilized below 10000 nG/hr within 24 hours as the ion exchanger captured the main nucleus, Na-24 and purified the pool water of HWL.

  • From the view of the environmental protection against the use of fossil fuels, a great of efforts have been exerted to find an alternative energy source. Hydrogen may become an alternative. However the product species of the hydrogen flame is only $H_2O$, which emits only non-luminous radiation so the radiation from it is much smaller than that for a hydrocarbon flame. In this study, the authors designed and fabricated a laboratory scale test furnace to study thermal characteristics of hydrogen-air diffusion flame. In addition, the effects of addition of reacting as well as non-reacting solid particles were experimentally investigated. Among the total heat flux to the wall, about 75% was occupied by radiation while 25 % by convection. When the aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles were added, the radiative heat flux was reduced due to heat blockage effects. On the other hand, the total as well as the radiative heat flux was increased when the carbon particles were seeded, since the overall temperature increased. The effects of swirl and excess air ratio were also examined.

  • A deuterium oxide leakage accident occurred on October 4, 1999, at nuclear power plant in Korea. The concentration of tritium in air increased and 22 workers were exposed by tritium at that time. It is well known that tritium causes internal exposure. Therefore, we examined complete blood cell count, physical and biological dosimetry fur 13 workers among whole 22 workers to check the health effect and to evaluate the dose estimation of tritium exposure. The leukocyte count test, one of general blood test, was normal. The estimated doses were 0 - 4.44 mSv by physical dosimetry and 0-37 mGy by biological dosimetry. This dose does not exceed radiation dose limit, and the clinical symptoms of the exposed workers were not shown. The consistency between clinical sign and estimated dose means that physical and biological dosimetry were very useful especially in accident evaluation.

  • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers are the most widely used precursor of the materials for carbon fibers. The conventional process of carbon fibers from PAN precursor fiber includes two step; stabilization at low temperature and carbonization at high temperature. Compared to thermal stabilization, the stabilization process by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation is a advanced and brief method. However, a stabilization by E-beam irradiation was required a high dose (over 5,000 kGy) and spend over 1.5 hr (1.14 MeV, 1 mA). In the present work the main goal is exploring a quick stabilization process by cotrolling E-beam currents. The effect of various E-beam currents on stabilization of PAN precursor fiber was studied by gel fraction test, thermo gravimertic analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile strength, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images.
