  • In order to apply for silane crosslinking process to PTC products, especially. self-regulating heater, silane crosslinked samples were compared with radiation crosslinked sample in terms of PTC characteristic and PTC stability. Silane crosslinked samples have lower PTC intensity than radiation crosslinked sample. It can be explained that multiple networks of silane crosslink restrict the movement of molecules in the composite as the sample is heating. As a result of heat cycles at $140^{\circ}C$, the changes of volume resistivity and PTC intensity for radiation crosslinked sample were higher than those of silane crosslinked samples. Whereas, in the case of heat cycles at $85^{\circ}C$, which is limiting temperature for self-regulating heater, both silane and radiation crosslinked samples show stable results without pronounce changes of resistivity up to five cycles.

  • In this research, the radiation resistance of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) which can be used as a insulating materials of for electrical cable in the nuclear power plant were investigated. EPR and CSPE were irradiated by ${\gamma}$-ray at various doses ranging from 50 to 500 kGy at room temperature in air. The irradiated EPR and CSPE was investigated in terms of activation energy, mechanical properties, and oxidation stability. The experimental results revealed that CSPE exhibited the higher radiation resistance in comparison to that of EPR.

  • Zirconium pyrithione complex was prepared by reaction of sodium-pyrithione solution and zirconyl chloride solution. The physico-chemical properties of the complex was examined by means of IR, XRD, DSC and NMR. And the stability of Zr-complex was investigated on the basis of accelerated stability analysis under conditions of temp. elevation, UV radiation and pH dependence. The result indicates that the ratio of the ligand to metal in Zr-pyrithione complex was determined 4:1, and its stability constant was $4.643{\times}10^4$. The rate order of decomposition of the complex was apparent first-order reaction of which rate constant and the decomposition rate was not only accelerated by effect of heat and UV radiation but was catalyzed by specific acid-base catalysis considered the pH dependence for the hydrolysis of the complex and the suspension was most stable over the range pH 4-8 indicating that solvent catalysis is the primary made of reaction in this region.

  • Hydroxyurea (HU) is a novel salt-free reductant used potentially for the separation of U/Pu in the advanced PUREX process. In this work, the radiation stability of HU were systematically investigated in solution by examining the effects of the type of rays (α, β, and γ irradiations), the absorbed dose (10-50 kGy), and the HNO3 concentration (0-3 mol L-1). The influence degree on HU radiolysis rates followed the order of the absorbed dose > the ray type > the HNO3 concentration, but the latter two had moderate effects on HU radiolysis products where NH4+ and NO2- were found to be the most abundant ones, suggesting that the differences of α, β, and γ rays should be considered in the study of irradiation effects. The radiolysis mechanism was explored using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and it proposed the dominant radiolysis paths of HU, indicating that the radiolysis of HU was mainly a free radical reaction among ·H, eaq-, H2O, intermediates, and the radiolytic free radical fragments of HU. The results reported here provide valuable insights into the mechanistic understanding of HU radiolysis under α, β, and γ irradiations and reliable data support for the application of HU in the reprocessing of spent fuel.

  • We have studied the effect of channel and/or spacing chirpings on the near field and near field intensity patterns, modal gains and radiation angles of 6 supermodes in the index-guided laser arrays with 6 channels, on the basis of the coupled mode theory. The spacings between channels can be indenpendent parameters for control of the radiation angle. It is found that an asymmetrically v channel-chirped array has both a smaller radiation angle and better supermode discrimination characteristics than a uniform array. Comparing two approaches for enhancing modal stability in point of supermode discrimination characteristics, approach I which increases the coupling cofficient between the outer-most waveguides at each end of an otherwise uniform array, has superior discrimination characteristics to the approach II which increases the propagation constant for the end elements with the same coupling between neighbor elements. Approach III which has a narrower spacing between the outer-most waveguides at one end and a wider channel width of the outer-most waveguide at another end, gets a narrower radiation angle than the approach I and good supermode discrimination characteristics by applying optimized gain profiles.

  • An Area Radiation Monitoring System (ARMS) ionization chamber, which had an 11.8 L active volume, was fabricated and performance-tested at KAERI. Low leakage currents, linearities at low and high dose rates were achieved from performance tests. The correlation coefficients between the ionization currents and the dose rates are 1 at high dose rate and 0.99 at low dose rate. In this study, an integration-type ARMS ionization chamber was tested over a year for an evaluation of its long-term stability at a radioisotope (RI) repository of the Young-gwang nuclear power plant. The standard deviation of dose rate of 1 day data and over a 100-days mean value were 6.2 $\mu$R/h and 2.9 $\mu$R/h, respectively. The fabricated ARMS ionization chamber showed stable performance from the results of the long-term tests. Design and performance characteristics of the fabricated ionization chamber for the ARMS from performance-tests are also addressed.

  • In previous study, the novel nanosized curdlan-silica complex for a sustain-releasing effect was developed by using gamma-irradiation. It can be applicable to use in various sustainr-eleasing formulation in agriculture industry. This study was conducted to investigate its storage stability and environmental toxicity in an accelerated condition. The complex samples were treated with high temperature condition ($65^{\circ}C$) during 3 weeks, and then sustain-releasing property of complex was verified thereby using Ion Chromatography on a weekly basis. The morphology of the complex was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results of Ion Chromatography analysis showed that sample treated for 3 weeks was similar to sustain-releasing pattern of non-treatment sample. We verify concluded that the complex is able to keep its sustain-releasing property and sustained-releasing in 3 years. Also the formulation has no environmental toxicity.

  • Trace elements play crucial role in the maintenance of genome stability in the cells. Many endogenous defense enzymes are containing trace elements such as superoxide dismutase and metalloproteins. These enzymes are contributing in the detoxification of reactive oxidative species (ROS) induced by ionizing radiation in the cells. Zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium are main trace elements that have protective roles against radiation-induced DNA damages. Trace elements in the free salt forms have protective effect against cell toxicity induced by oxidative stress, metal-complex are more active in the attenuation of ROS particularly through superoxide dismutase mimetic activity. Manganese-complexes in protection of normal cell against radiation without any protective effect on cancer cells are more interesting compounds in this topic. The aim of this paper to review the role of trace elements in protection cells against genotoxicity and side effects induced by ionizing radiation.
