  • Effect of the pin radius on the radiation characteristics of a patch antenna with a pin array inserted between a patch and ground plane is investigated. As the pin radius increases, the resonant frequency increases and the radiation intensity in the horizontal plane decreases. However, the radiation intensity in the horizontal plane increases for the pin radius larger than a certain value.

  • This paper presents a novel design of a differential patch antenna for 60-GHz millimeter-wave applications. The design process of the back-to-back (BTB) patch antenna is based on the conventional single-patch antenna. The initial design of the BTB patch antenna (Type-I) has a patch size of 0.66 × 0.98 mm2 and a substrate size of 0.99 × 1.48 mm2. It has a gain of 1.83 dBi and an efficiency of 94.4% with an omni-directional radiation pattern. A 0.4 mm-thick high-resistivity silicon (HRS) is employed for the substrate of the BTB patch antenna. The proposed antenna is further analyzed to investigate the effect of substrate size and resistivity. As the substrate resistivity decreases, the gain and efficiency degrade due to the substrate loss. As the substrate (HRS) size decreases approaching the patch size, the resonant frequency increases with a higher gain and efficiency. The BTB patch antenna has optimal performances when the substrate size matches the patch size on the HRS substrate (Type-II). The antenna is redesigned to have a patch size of 0.81 × 1.18 mm2 on the HRS substrate in the same size. It has an efficiency of 94.9% and a gain of 1.97 dBi at the resonant frequency of 60 GHz with an omni-directional radiation pattern. Compared to the initial design of the BTB patch antenna (Type-I), the optimal BTB patch antenna (Type-II) has a slightly higher efficiency and gain with a considerable reduction in antenna area by 34.8%.

  • Parameters of a microstrip patch antenna such as the resonant frequency, radiation conductance, and the bandwidth are calculated. The rectangular microstrip patch antenna fed by a microstrip transmission line is fabricated and its resonant frequency, radiation pattern, and input voltage standing wave ratio are measured. The measured resonant frequency for 13.0mm$\times$9.7mm copper clad woven PTFE/glass laminate plate is 9.06Ghz, where the calculative is 9.00Ghz. And the measured vswr shows that the bandwidth of the antenna is 225MHz for vswr less then 2.0 which the calculated quality factor of the patch gives the bandwidth OF 280ghZ. The measured radiation pattern for 5 element as well as 4 element patch array shows less then 4dB deviation in the first side lobes from the designed values for both E and H plane pattern. This diviation is believed to be the power division errors of the power divider.

  • Radiation characteristics of a dual-mode inductor loaded patch antenna using zeroth order resonance and half wavelength resonance are investigated. The isolation between two radiation patterns from the two different modes is improved by increasing the forward radiation and decreasing the horizontal radiation of half wavelength resonance mode. The frequency difference between the two resonant frequencies increases as the dielectric constant of the antenna substrate decreases and the operating frequency increases.

  • This study identified effects of Isoegomaketone for applicable patch on the arthritis in mice. Isoegomaketone (IK) was isolated from Perilla frutescens, which is annual herbal traditional medicinal, aromatic, functional food. IK has various physiological effects such as anti-inflammation, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer. In the previous study, oral administration of IK to a mouse model of collagen antibody-induced arthritis(CAIA), which is similar to human rheumatoid arthritis(RA), alleviated symptoms. In this study, we attached a patch containing IK to mouse skin to demonstrate whether it had the same efficacy as oral administration in CAIA mouse. As a result of measuring the arthritis score, paw volume, and paw thickness, it was confirmed that arthritis symptoms were alleviated in the group to which the patch containing IK was attached. These results show that IK is effective in alleviating arthritis not only through oral administration but also through patches applied to skin, and that it has potential as a material for future patch development.

  • Effect of a finite square substrate plane on the radiation characteristics of a microstrip patch antenna is investigated. Excellent agreements between the simulation and measured results on the radiation characteristics of patch antennas for various square substrate thicknesses and sizes are obtained. The effect of a square substrate plane on the resonant frequency and bandwidth is small, while that on the radiation pattern is large. As the substrate thickness increases, the variations of the gain of the broadside radiation, the direction of the maximum radiation, and the radiation pattern increase for the variation of a substrate size. The maximum gain difference between the broadside radiation and back radiation and the large gain of broadside radiation are obtained when the length of a side of a square substrate plane is $0.8\;{\lambda}_0$.

  • Effects of Airgap and anisotropy substrate on input impedance and radiation pattern of rectangular microstrip patch antenna are studied in terms of an integral equation formulation. The input impedance and radiation pattern of microstrip patch antenna is investigated by using Galerkin's moment method in solving the integral equation. Sinusoidal functions are selected as basis functions, which resemble in the actual standing wave on the Patch. From the numerical results, the variation of input impedance and radiation patterns in the variation of air gap thickness, anisotropy ratio of substrate, and relative permittivity of anisotropy substrate are presented.

  • In order to improve the radiation characteristics of the microstrip antenna, microstrip array antenna consisting of one center patch fed by a coaxial probe and several patches directly coupled to the E-plane by microstrip line is analyzed. The equivalent circuit of the array antenna is represented by the conventional transmission line and the various parameters, such as the mdicrostrip line length, the patch length and the feed point location are calculated to improve the radiation pattern for 5-patch array antenna which has the equal patch width. The 5-patch array antenna with the radiation pattern which has low sidelobe level and narrow beam width is fabricated and then the measured results are compared with the computed values and the results of the single patch microstrip antenna too.

  • The inductive loaded patch antenna with suppressed radiation along the horizontal plane and enhanced broadside gain is investigated by adjusting the width and the via radius of a unit cell at a fixed length of a unit cell. The effects of the via radius and the width of the unit cell on the dispersion characteristics of the inductive loaded transmission line are investigated. The systematic study to determine the via radius and the width of the unit cell for the effective dielectric constant of the inductive loaded patch antenna close to 1 in order to suppress the radiation along the horizontal plane is presented. Inductive loaded patch antennas composed of five unit cells with resonant frequency of 5 GHz are designed and their radiation characteristics are presented. The horizontal radiation along the E-plane is greatly suppressed to less than -15 dBi when the effective dielectric constant of the inductive loaded patch antenna is slightly less than 1.
