There are two wave modes induced by an oscillating body on the free surface of a two-layer fluid: the barotropic and baroclinic modes. To investigate the generated waves composed of two modes, a radiation problem involving a heaving rectangular body was solved in a numerical wave tank. A new artificial damping zone scheme was developed and applied in the frequency-domain analysis. The performance of this damping scheme was compared with given radiation boundary conditions for various conditions. The added mass and radiation damping coefficients for the heaving rectangular body were also calculated for various fluid-density ratios.

The appropriate radiation conditions of ship motion problem with advancing speed in frequency domain are investigated from a theoretical and practical point of view. From extensive numerical experiments that have been conducted for evaluation of the relevant radiation conditions, a hybrid radiation technique is proposed in which the Sommerfeld radiation condition and the free surface damping are mixed. Based on the comparison with the results of the translating and pulsating Green function method, the optimal damping factor of the hybrid radiation technique is selected, and the observed limitations of the proposed hybrid radiation technique are discussed, along with its accuracy obtained from the numerical solutions. Comparative studies of the forward-speed seakeeping prediction methods available confirm that the results of applying the hybrid radiation technique are relatively similar to those obtained from the translating and pulsating Green function method. This confirmation is made in comparisons with the results of solely applying either the free surface damping, or the Sommerfeld radiation condition. By applying the proposed hybrid radiation technique, the wave patterns, hydrodynamic coefficients, and motion responses of the Wigley III hull are finally calculated, and compared with those of model tests. It is found that, in comparison with the model test results, the three-dimensional Rankine source method adopting the proposed hybrid radiation technique is more robust in terms of accuracy and numerical stability, as well as in obtaining the forward speed seakeeping solution.
Radiation damping due to wave propagation in unbounded domains may cause a significant reduction of structural vibrations when excited near resonance. Here a novel matrix-valued algebraic Pad$\acute{e}$-like stiffness formulation in the frequency-domain and a corresponding state equation in the time domain are elaborated for a soil-structure interaction problem with a layered soil excited in a transient manner by a flexible rotor during startup and shutdown. The contribution of radiation damping caused by a soil-layer upon a rigid bedrock is characterized by the corresponding amount of critical damping as it is used in structural dynamics.
With a simple pulse sequence ($\pi/2$-{gradient, duration T}-acquisition) in solution NMR, detected signal has slowly grown up to percents of the equilibrium magnetization. The source of this unusual resurrection of dephased magnetization after a crushed gradient is cross-correlated effects of radiation damping and the distant dipolar field, which has been demonstrated by a numerical simulation and theoretical analysis.

In this paper, sound radiation of a rotary compressor used in room air-conditioner is investigated. structural eigenmodes are identified through modal test. Since accumulator is found important factor of sound radiation, damping material was added around accumulator to reduce sound radiation level of rotary compressor. As result, sound radiation was reduced to 3 dB.

The purpose of this paper is to review the appropriateness of the application method for the value of the damping ratio suggested in the current design standards and evaluation guidelines when evaluating the seismic performance of concrete dams and to suggest improvements. As a result of the study, for the magnitude of the damping ratio in the dynamic elastic analysis, it is necessary to refer to the case of a similar dam in which the magnitude of the earthquake load is similar and the reproducibility of the damping ratio has been verified. Considering this, it is necessary to apply a low damping ratio and consider adding hysteresis damping in case of nonlinear behavior. In addition, since the concrete dam body located on the rock has insignificant radiation attenuation effect, it is not reasonable to increase the damping ratio of the concrete dam body to reflect the radiation damping. Therefore, in order to evaluate the realistic seismic performance of concrete dams, it is necessary to revise the damping ratio-related contents contained in the current dam design standards and evaluation guidelines.

A dash panel plays an important role to protect noise as well as heat. Meanwhile, it is also the most important path that transfers energy to the interior cavity, so that some of noises are transferred via air and its structural vibration becomes a major issue. From the viewpoint of NVH performance, simplified structures analogues to the dash wall are dealt with. Stiffeners, damping sheets and sound packages attached to a flat panel are taken into account as design variables. Structural radiation characteristics(thus, structure borne) such as radiation efficiency and radiation power are mainly discussed. For the case when an excitation is applied on a frame that surrounds the panel, it is shown that the radiation efficiency increases by attaching a stiffener to the panel, which is similarly found from the case when a panel is directly excited. It seems more effective to attach damping sheets along the boundary area of the panel rather than its middle area. The radiation efficiency of sound packages may make a dominant contribution to transmission loss as well as sound radiation. Experimental work was carried out to verify the results based on the simulation study.

The radiation of sound from a rectangular plate with a guided edge condition is investigated. By taking this particular boundary condition into account, simple analytical forms of the average radiation efficiency and radiation power based on the modal approach can be found, where the cross-modal terms can average out for all possible point excitation locations. Design variables of the plate such as thickness, aspect ratio, and damping that are closely related to the sound radiation are mainly discussed. The radiation power of the guided plate is found to be governed by the piston mode as well as the critical frequency. While both the radiation efficiency and the radiation power seem to be influenced by thickness and a large aspect ratio, damping loss factor seems less important to the radiation power. It is also shown that no clear corner and edge mode regions may be found for the guided case, unlike the pinned.

Applying damping sheets or dampers (dynamic or mass) can reduce noise from vibrating structure as well as vibration. However, this approach requires increases of weight and cost. If one can reduce structural noise by only modifying the structural shape, which would be the best practice. It is natural that the noise characteristics change when the structure is modified, but the recent experiment on the sunroof frame showed that the modification of the frame beads results in change of the structural damping, so that the corresponding noise can be reduced. In this context, the reason why the structural damping and the related noise upon an impact excitation is changed is theoretically investigated. The change of dynamic and damping characteristics of the strip panels when their shapes are modified is experimentally found and it is shown that such behaviours can be predicted by computer simulation. Some experimental specimen, mainly strip-type panels, are examined for the numerical verification, and especially damping ratios are investigated.

In this paper, a comparative study on the radiation techniques for the motion analysis of the three dimensional floating structure with the forward speed was carried out. The Sommerfeld radiation condition, the damping technique, and the point shift technique were used for the comparative study. Radiated wave patterns and hydrodynamic coefficients of the heave motion of floating structure with the forward speed were compared and analyzed. The characteristics and limitations of each radiation technique were analyzed through the calculation results. To overcome the limitations of conventional radiation techniques, the hybrid radiation technique combining the Sommerfeld radiation condition with the damping technique was proposed. It is confirmed that the proposed method, the Hybrid radiation technique, improves the limitation of the speed range and the dissipation of the wave of the conventional radiation technique. The motion analysis code of the three dimensional floating structure with the forward speed based on the Rankine source method with hybrid radiation technique was developed. In order to validate the developed code, hydrodynamic analyses were carried and compared with published experiments.
