  • Wrist joints consist of irregularly shaped carpal bones and other complicated structures. Thus, evaluating the motion of a wrist joint is a challenging task. In this study, we used an infrared camera to perform a kinematic analysis of a dart-throwing motion. We measured the difference between the movement of a normal wrist and constrained wrist (wrist with a wrist glove) in the dart-throwing motion with thirty six healthy participants. We measured the ulna flexion - radial extension motion using the attached passive marker and analyzed it using Polygon software and SPSS. The pitch and yaw motions with a glove was bigger than the ones without a glove by 20 and 15 degrees, respectively. On the other hand, the roll motion without a glove was bigger than the one with a glove by 7 degree. Wilcoxon signed rank test (p<0.05) confirmed that there are significant differences between the motion with and without a glove. It was found that the magnitude of the pitch and yaw motion with a constrained wrist joint toward radial extension in dart-throwing motion is smaller than the one with a normal wrist joint. However, a normal wrist joint showed a bigger movement in the roll direction.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the motion of the scaphoid, capitate, and lunate during dart-throwing motion by three-dimensional modeling. Five series of CT images of five normal right wrists were acquired from five motion steps from radial extension to ulnar flexion in the dart-throwing motion plane. Segmentation and three-dimensional modeling of bones from CT images was performed using Analyze. Distances among centroids of the scaphoid, capitate and lunate and angles between principal axes of three carpal bones were calculated to analyze the motion by using MATLAB. As the wrist motion changed from radial extension to ulnar flexion, the distance between two adjacent bones decreased. The scaphoid and lunate rotated less than the capitates during dart-throwing motion. This study reports the Three-dimensional in vivo measurement of carpal motion using CT images.

  • The object of this paper is to examine the vibration characteristics of the point-symmetric radial mode in a spherical piezoelectric transducer. The differential equations of piezoelectric radial motion are derived in terms of the radial displacement and electric potential, which are functions of the radial coordinate and time. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions yields the characteristic equation of radial vibration. Numerical results of the natural frequencies are compared with the experimental measurements. The paper discusses the difference between piezoelectric and elastic resonances and the dependence of the natural frequencies on the radius and thickness of the piezoelectric spheres. As a result it is concluded for the first radial mode that the natural frequency is reduced due to the piezoelectric phenomenon and that the frequency exponentially decreases as the sphere radius increases.

  • Purpose: To compare three, motion-resistant, T1-weighted MR sequences on the hepatobiliary phase for gadoxetic acid-enhanced MR imaging of the liver. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, 79 patients underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced, 3T liver MR imaging. Fifty-nine were examined using a standard protocol, and 20 were examined using a motion-resistant protocol. During the hepatocyte-specific phase, three MR sequences were acquired: 1) gradient recalled echo (GRE) with controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration (CAIPIRINHA); 2) radial GRE with the interleaved angle-bisection scheme (ILAB); and 3) radial GRE with golden-angle scheme (GA). Two readers independently assessed images with motion artifacts, streaking artifacts, liver-edge sharpness, hepatic vessel clarity, lesion conspicuity, and overall image quality, using a 5-point scale. The images were assessed by measurement of liver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and tumor-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). The results were compared, using repeated post-hoc, paired t-tests with Bonferroni correction and the Wilcoxon signed rank test with Bonferroni correction. Results: In the qualitative analysis of cooperative patients, the results for CAIPIRINHA had significantly higher ratings for streak artifacts, liver-edge sharpness, hepatic vessel clarity, and overall image quality as compared to, radial GRE, (P < 0.016). In the imaging of uncooperative patients, higher scores were recorded for ILAB and GA with respect to all of the qualitative assessments, except for streak artifact, compared with CAIPIRINHA (P < 0.016). However, no significant differences were found between ILAB and GA. For quantitative analysis in uncooperative patients, the mean liver SNR and lesion-to-liver CNR with radial GRE were significantly higher than those of CAIPIRINHA (P < 0.016). Conclusion: In uncooperative patients, the use of the radial GRE sequence can improve the image quality compared to GRE imaging with CAIPIRINHA, despite the data acquisition methods used. The GRE imaging with CAIPIRINHA is applicable for patients without breath-holding difficulties.

  • It is very important to test motion accuracy and performance of NC machine tools as they affect that of all other machines machined by them in industry. In this paper, in has become possible to detect errors of linear displacement of radial direction for circular motion test using newly assembled magnetic type of linear scales so called Magnescale ball bar system, and to calculate time interval getting error motion data and revolution angle of circular motion in machining center using tick pulses come out from computer. And a set of error data gotten from test is expressed to a plot by computer treatment and to numerics of error motion by statistical treatment and results of test are compared with those of Renishaw ball bar system.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the mid to long-term clinical and radiological outcome of vascularized pronator quadratus-wrapped radial bone flap arthroplasty for symptomatic advanced $Kienb{\ddot{o}}ck's$ disease. Between 1982 and 2000, 41 cases of advanced $Kienb{\ddot{o}}ck's$ disease were treated with vascularized pronator quadratus wrapped radial bone flap arthroplasty. There were 17 men and 24 women, with a mean age of 39 years at the time of operation. According to Lichtman's classification, there were 13 stage IIIb and 28 stage IV patients. The duration of follow-up averaged 6.1 ($3{\sim}22$) years. We assessed the clinical outcome by subjective pain and active range of motion of the wrist, and evaluated the radiologic outcome by using carpal height ratio and radioscaphoid angle. Postoperatively, all patient reported an improvement in their symptoms. The mean active extension and flexion were improved by $9^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$, respectively (p<0.05). The carpal height ratio was decreased from a mean of 0.52 to 0.48, and the radioscahpoid angle was increased from a mean of $61^{\circ}$ to $66^{\circ}$, but the differences were not significant statistically. Vascularized pronator quadratus-wrapped radial bone flap arthroplasty improves the wrist motion and may prevent serious carpal collapse in advanced $Kienb{\ddot{o}}ck's$ Disease.

  • This paper reports on the measurement of the vane motion in a positive displacement small vane pump. The capacitive method using ceramic vane is proposed to measure the vane motion. This method enables us to measure only radial motion of the vane regardless of the motions of other directions. With simple experiments and solutions of simultaneous equations, the indirect compensation of measured signal was performed.

  • A magnetically suspended robot joint is developed, which is free of dust and oil generation. Two radial bearings consisting of cone-shaped magnet cores control the rotor motion in the axial and radial directions. A linearized dynamic model is developed for active control of the magnetic bearing system. The control algorithm is constructed such that the axial displacement of the joint is controlled by radial control current to the pairs of facing radial bearings. The stability and control performance is tested through numerical simulation based on the nonlinear model. Experiments are also performed to verify the theoretical development.
