  • As wind turbine rotors increase, the overall loads and dynamic response become an important issue. This problem is augmented by the exposure of wind turbines to severe atmospheric events with unconventional flows such as tornadoes, which need specific designs not included in standards and codes at present. An experimental study was conducted to analyze the loads induced by a tornado-like vortex (TLV) on horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT). A large-scale tornado simulation developed in The Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) Dome at Western University in Canada, the so-called Mode B Tornado, was employed as the TLV flow acting on a rigid wind turbine model under two rotor operational conditions (idling and parked) for five radial distances. It was observed that the overall forces and moments depend on the location and orientation of the wind turbine system with respect to the tornado vortex centre, as TLV are three-dimensional flows with velocity gradients in the radial, vertical, and tangential direction. The mean bending moment at the tower base was the most important in terms of magnitude and variation in relation to the position of the HAWT with respect to the core radius of the tornado, and it was highly dependent on the rotor Tip Speed Ratio (TSR).

  • A gas turbine consists of an upstream compressor and a downstream turbine with a combustion chamber, and also the compressor and the turbine are generally coupled using a single shaft. Large scale gas turbine compressor is designed as multi-stage axial flow and the blade is fan-type which is thick and wide. Recently radial cracking happens occasionally at the compressor blade tip of large scale gas turbine. So, FEM was performed on the compressor blade and vibration modes and dynamic stresses were analyzed. According to the analysis, 9th natural frequency mode of the blade, which is 2 strip mode, is near the vane passing frequency by the vane located at the upstream of the blade.

  • A review on the design analysis of an axial-flow turbine is presented. Followed by a brief introduction to the fundamentals on an axial-flow turbine, a design procedure is described with a sample design of one for a small turbo-jet engine. Design procedure is composed of two parts: one-dimensional analysis of three-dimensional effects based on radial equilibrium theory. The method described herein is so simple and rapid that it can be applied to the preliminary design analysis of turbo-machinery equipped with axial-flow turbines.

  • The analysis shows that the vibration is one of the main reasons of turbine failure. Especially, the problems caused by vibration occur right after retrofit of the turbine-generator and restarting the turbine. Through the case study of high vibration caused by after the turbine trip and restart, turbine vibration was identified to be influenced by startup condition. Turbine startup at high casing temperature right after unscheduled turbine trip cause radial expansion in rotor by contraction in axial direction, while casing continues to contract by steam flowing into casing. Consequently, gap between rotor and casing decrease until to metal contact to cause high vibration. Through the case study of high vibration of turbine-generator system after generator retrofit, it was identified that generator replacement could cause high vibration in turbine-generator system if the influence of generator replacement on entire system was not considered properly. To prevent startup delay caused by high vibration, it is important to keep the gaps at the design standard and start the turbine after thermal equilibrium.

  • Performance analysis and test of a 50kW micro gas turbine is carried out. The present study was initiated in 1996 by KIMM researchers to develope a 50kW class turbogenerator gas turbine engine for hybrid vehicle propulsion system. but with its low emission and compactness, it seemed that it can also be applied as a source of distributed power generation. In this study, general description of the KIMM's efforts to acquire performance test skills of the self-made 50kW micro gas turbine engine. At present, non-load performance test up to 615000 rpm was accomplished and is expected to make through 80,000 rpm by the end of year. Several revisions in design and manufacture were made during the course of experiments. The resulting outputs is thought to be valuable for the further refinement of the system for eventual commercialization of the product.

  • The present study is concerned with the flow patterns induced by other impellers in a rectangular tank Impellers are FBT(Flat blade turbine), PBT(Pitched blade turbine), Shroud turbine, Rushton Turbine, and Helical ribbon turbine. The solution of flows in moving reference frames requires the use of 'moving' cell zone. The moving zone approaches are MRF(Multiple reference frame), which is a steady-state approximation and Sliding method, which is a unsteady-state approximation. Numerical results using two moving zone approaches are compared with experiments by Ranade & Joshi, which have done extensive LDA measurements of the flow generated by a standard six-bladed Rushton turbine in a cylindrical baffled vessel. In this paper we simulated the flow patterns with above mentioned moving zone approaches and impellers. Turbulence model is RNG k-$\epsilon$ model.

  • A wind turbine is one of the most popular energy conversion systems to generate electricity from the natural renewable energy source and an axial-flow type wind turbine is the most popular system for the electricity generation in the wind farm nowadays. In this study, a cross-flow type turbine has been studied for the application of wind turbine for electricity generation. The target capacity of electric power generation of the model wind turbine developing on the project is 12 volts, 130A/H (about 1.56kW). The important design parameters of the model turbine impeller are the inlet and exit angle of the turbine blade, number of blade, hub/tip ratio and the exit flow angle of the casing. In this study, the radial equilibrium theorem was used to decide the inlet and exit angle of the impller blade and CFD technique was used to have the performance analysis of the designed model power turbine to find out the optimum geometry of the CPT impeller and casing. The designed CPT with 24 impeller blades at ${\alpha}=82^{\circ}$, ${\beta}=40^{\circ}$ of turbine blade angle was estimated to generate 284.6 N.m of indicated torque and 2.14kW of indicated power.

  • The electric power network paralleled with wind turbine generator may have the negative impacts on the protection, operation, and management caused by the operation of wind turbine generator. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the operating characteristic of wind turbine generator. This paper describes model of a squirrel-cage type wind turbine induction generator and the soft cut-in connection method for reducing the transient state on power network, and simulates various cases of wind turbine operations. The radial distribution network of IEEE 13-bus are modeled and tested by PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • Global concerns about environmental issues such as a greenhouse effect are increasing gradually. Quantity of emission of carbon dioxide by Hydro-Power Plants is smaller than those by power plants of other renewable energy sources. Manufacturing costs of hydro turbine is relatively very expensive because the structure of hydro turbine is very complex. Therefore, cross-flow turbine is adopted in this study because of its simple structure and high possibility of applying to small hydropower. The result shows that as effective head increases, tangential and radial flow velocities increase and thus, the increased tangential velocity contributes to the increase of angular momentum and output torque.

  • The flow behind the variable area nozzle which corresponds to the flow at the leading edge of the impeller was measured with a 3-hole yaw probe and calculated with CFD. Two nozzle throat-areas were investigated. One is the smallest and the other is the largest opening for the variable nozzle. Test results agreed with the calculated results qualitatively. The leakage flow through the tip clearance of the nozzle vane significantly affected the flow field downstream of the nozzle vane with the smallest opening. However, the effect on leakage flow on the flow field downstream of the nozzle vane with the largest opening was very weak and the effect of wake is dominant.
