  • This paper is to present the determination of the optimal Joss rate parameters and urnt bydrographs from the observed single rainfall-runoff event using optimization models coupled with a stochastic technique for the global solution. Two kinds of the linear program models are formulated to derive the optimal unit hydrographs and loss rate parameters for gaged basins; one mimmizes the summation of the absolute residual between predlCted and observed runoff ordinates and the other, the maximum absolute residuaL Multistart algorithm which is one or stochastic techniques for the global optimum is adopted to perturb the parameters of the loss rate equations. Multistart efficiently searches the feasIble region to identify the global optimlUll for loss rate parameters, which yields the optimal loss rate parameters and unit hydrograph for Kostiakov's, Plulip's, and Horton's equation. The unique unit hydrograph ordinates for a gIven rainfall-runoff event iS exclusrvely obtained WIth $\Phi$ index, but unit hydrograph ordinates depend upon the parameters [or each loss rate equations. The parameters of Green-Ampt's are determined through a trial and error method. In this paper the single rainfall-nmoff event observed from a watershed is considered to test the proposed method. The optimal unit hydrograph herein found has smaller deviations than the ones reported previously by other researchers.

  • Runoff of phorate, soil insecticide, were measured under simulated rainfall conditions in field using small test plot$(120\;cm{\times}120\;cm)$ at the loam area and loamy sand area. Fish acute toxicity tests were performed with runoff water to elucidate its toxicological effect on organisms in ecosystem. The average concentrations of phorate in runoff water from loam and loamy sand soil were 11.3 ppb and 4.8 ppb, respectively. However, there was no significant concentration difference between the heavy and the light rain. With loam soil, average runoff rates were 1.31 and 0.18%, while with loamy sand soil those were 0.48 and 0.012% under the heavy and the light rain conditions, respectively. Total average runoff rate was 0.50%. With killifish, no mortality was observed in runoff water from loamy sand soil, whereas half of the population was dead in runoff water from loam soil when it was diluted to 54.4% content.

  • Characteristics of runoff and groundwater qualities from a pasture and field were investigated. Flumes and monitoring wells were installed and water qualities of $NO_3$-N, TP and TKN were monitored from Aug. 1993 to Aug. 1994. Runoff from the pasture which was a sandy soil with cobbles mostly formed with seeping water at the bottom of it. But once overland flow occurred because of heavy rainfall, runoff increased sharply. $NO_3$-N concentration in pasture runoff was relatively stable ranging between 0.241-3.962mg/l. TP and TKN concentrations were stable but sharply increased once overland flow occurred. $NO_3$-N concentration in pasture groundwater was relatively stable regardless of depth of monitoring wells but TP and TKN concentrations were smaller in deeper wells. Runoff from the field which was flat and covered well with Sudan grass and surface residue was relatively small and $NO_3$-N, TP and TKN concentrations in runoff were stable and seemed unaffected by flow rate. $NO_3$-N concentration in field groundwater increased at the rate of 2.2mg/l per 100 m during a growing season as groundwater flows through the field. No significant differences in TP and TKN concentrations between the upper and lower areas in field groundwater were detected.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the impacts of land cover change on the runoff behavior using Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) model and Landsat images. Land cover maps were prepared using three every ten years from 1980 to 2000 of the upper watershed ($258\;km^2$) of Gyeongan stream. Hydrologic parameters of HSPF were calibrated using observed data (1999 - 2000) and validated using observed data (2001, 2003) at Gyeongan gauge station. The simulation results showed that runoff volume and peak rate increased as $15.0\;km^2$ forest areas decreased and $19.3\;km^2$ urban areas increased for 20 years land use changes. The runoff volume showed a higher rate of increase in wet year (2003, 1709.4 mm) than in dry year (2001, 871.2 mm). The peak runoff increased $13.3\;\%$ in normal year (2000, 1257.3 mm) because the year has the highest rain intensity (241.3 mm/hr) among the test years. The runoff volume of a dry season and a wet season (May - September) in normal year 2000 increased $4.4\;\%$ and decreased $8.1\;\%$, respectively.

  • This study analyzed hydrological changes of stormwater runoff of Seolleung Jeongneung zone according to the application of LID system based on landscape Architectural technology. The results are as follows. First, when flooding occurred in Gwanghwamun in July 27, 2011, the maximum instantaneous rainfall amount was 183 mm/hr recorded at 10:00 on 27th for 10 minutes, and it was confirmed that rainfall intensity more than three times as high as the maximum rainfall of 57.5 mm/hr. Second, it is possible to control peak flow rate in the case of 1,500mm of soil thickness, so that it is possible to improve the vulnerability of flood damage in Seolleung and Jeongneung zone when applying the LID system. Third, in the berm height scenario, peak flow rate control was not controled in all depth level models, but the first stormwater runoff was delayed by 4 hours and 10 minutes compared to the soil thickness scenario. It was interpreted as a relatively important indicator the soil thickness for the initial stromwater runoff reduction and the berm height for the peak runoff. Through this, the systematic adaptation of landscape-friendly ecological factors within the cultural property protection zone could theoretically confirm the effects of flood disaster prevention.

  • GRASS-AGNPS model integrated with GIS was applied to rural watersheds having complex land use characteristics and evaluated for its applicability through calibration using observed data. The analyses of raster encoding accuracy and model behavior to runoff, sediment yields and nutrient loads for different cell-size showed that 150 m cell size indicated reasonable applicability of the model. Simulated runoff was in a good agreement with the observed data and simulated peak runoff rate was larger than the observed data. The sediment yield simulated by modified AGNPS model using irregular cell for forest area were less than that of the regular cell method. In predicting sediment yields, the result showed a different trend at each representative rural watershed. Nutrient loads simulated by the model were significantly different from the observed data.

  • This study is carried out the analysis of the runoff characteristics for the design of the interior drainage systems by SWMM in urbanization basin. The basin analyzed in this study is Bumuh-chun basin which is located in Susung-gu of Taegu city. Huff method is used for rainfall distribution analysis. The optimal rainfall duration in Bumuh-chun basin is analyzed as about 90 minutes decided from comparison of arrival time and critical duration. Flood flow variation pattern is proposed through the comparison of the results of peak flow and peak time analyzed by SWMM about pre-urbanization and post-urbanization of Bumuh-chun basin. It is known that the variation of arrival time caused by the rapid increase of pavement rate in the upper area shows about 20∼25 minutes faster than pre- urbanization. Therefore, the management of surface water for design of water supply and drainage, and channel alteration has to considered the variation of geological factors according to urbanization.

  • This study presents the experimental results of pervious blocks subjected to a series of unique inflow conditions in urban area. The measured properties include the strength, permeability, drainage capacity and runoff, and evaporation for blocks made of two different size of aggregates. Results revealed that the strength satisfies the Korean Standard regardless of aggregate size whereas the immediate runoff occurred for the block with small size aggregate. On the other hand, the block with large aggregates allowed the drainage upon the initial inflow condition, which became hampered to induce the runoff by subsequent inflow. It was attributed to the fact that the capillary water often served as the hydraulic barrier in partially saturated condition. The salient observation indicated that the runoff highly depended on the evaporation and pre-wetting condition as well as the porosity and pore connectivity. The bilinear evaporate rate that makes the degree of saturation vary also had great influence on deterining the time-dependent runoff.

  • The runoff characteristics of non-point source pollutions in the municipal area of Jeonju were investigated and analyzed by using the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model). The flow rates and water qualities of runoff from two types of drainage conduits were measured respectively. One was a conventional combined sewer system and the other was a separated sewer system constructed recently From August to November in 2004, investigations on two rainfall events were performed and flow rate, pH, BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P were measured. These data were also used for model calibration. On the basis of the measured data and the simulation results by SWMM, it is reported that $80-90\%$ of pollution load is discharged in the early-stage storm runoff. Therefore, initial 10-30 mm of rainfall should be controlled effectively for the optimal treatment of non-point source pollution in urban area. Also, it was shown that the SWMM model was suitable for the management of non-point source pollution in the urban area and for the analysis of runoff characteristics of pollutant loads.
