An Adaptive Region-of-Interest Coding Based on EBCOT (EBCOT 기반의 적응적 관심영역 코딩)

  • To compress a specific part of an image with high quality or to transfer it, JPEG2000 standard offers an ROI(Region-of-Interest) image coding method. What is important in ROI coding is to process relative importance between ROI and background and to process ROI mask. We propose an adaptive ROI coding method supplemented the existing Implicit ROI coding and Modified implicit ROI coding to improve image quality and reduce ROI mask information. The proposed method is an EBCOT-based ROI coding that extracts ROI from the compressed bitstream, and gets the ROI mask information by classifying the codeblocks into 6 patterns. The information includes the pattern type(3bit) and the width(5bit) expressing the boundary between two regions for each codeblock. As a result, the method shows an excellent compression performance in ROI region as well as in the whole region of an image.

  • One of the most significant characteristics of JPEG 2000, the emerging still image standards, is the Region of Interest(ROI) coding. Until now, there have been many proposed ROI methods. However, all of these methods can not be applied completely in applications. In this paper, the ROI coding mechanisms in JPEG2000 is first outlined and the diversity of ROI coding methods is discussed in detail. Then a comparative selection about using a proper ROI method according to ROI applications' requirements is proposed. Finally the experimental results show that there are also several parameters that control the effectiveness of ROI coding, such as the codeblock size, ROI size, wavelet filter type, the number of wavelet decomposition levels, and ROI importance score.

  • One of the most significant characteristics of JPEG2000. the emerging still image standards. is the ROI (Region of Interest) coding. JPEG2000 provides a number of ROI coding mechanisms and ROI parameters. To apply them to an application, it must select the applicable values. In this paper, we evaluate how the ROI coding mechanisms and the ROI parameters influencing JPEG2000 qualify affect the ROI quality and the whole image quality. The ROI coding mechanisms are Maxshift and Implicit. and the parameters are tile size and ROI size, codeblock size, number of DWT decomposition levels and ROI importance. The bigger the tile size, the better the quality. The bigger the ROI size, the ROI importance and the number of DWT decomposition levels, the worse the qualify. In code block $32{\times}32$ of Maxshift and Implicit, it has the best qualify.

  • Currently, the preferred processing of a user-centered ROI(Region-of-Interest) or a specific region of image to transmission and decompression of a full image is needed in different applications, specifically mobile applications. Here, we have to study how different factors affect ROI coding methods. Therefore, an application can select an ROI coding method and several parameters suitable for the environments. The ROI coding methods used in the study are Maxshift and Implicit and the parameters are tile size, image size, code block size, ROI importance and the number of lowest resolution levels. This study shows the experimental results between the different parameters and the two ROI coding methods.

  • Currently, the preferred processing of a user-centered ROI(Region-of-Interest) or a specific region of image than the transmission and decompression of a full image is needed in different applications. This preferred processing has been actively studied about from the ROI coding methods in JPEG2000 standards to the new methods complementing them. But, there does not exist an ROI coding method suitable for all applications. Therefore, this study shows a criterion of selection according to the application requirements for applying an adequate ROI coding method in JPEG2000 applications, and shows the experimental results deciding efficient parameters in the selected methods.

  • We propose ROI(region of interest) image coding application to still image using PSBS(partial significant bitplane shift)method combined with human face region detecting system. PSBS is an encoding algorithm for ROI image coding in JPEG2000, and takes advantages of both generic scaling based method and maximum shift method defined in JPEG2000. The Powerful advantages of PSBS are able to adjusting image quality in ROI and background flexibly, and support arbitrarily shaped ROI coding without coding the shape. In this letter, we show how to compress an image for human face region using PSBS method combined with human face region detecting system, and propose its application.

  • In image coding applications such as web browsing and image database searching, it is very useful to quickly view a small portion of the image with higher quality. Region of interest (ROI) coding technique provides the capability to reconstruct the ROI in advance of decompressing the rest of the image, with a smaller number of transmitted bits compared to the case where the entire image is treated with the same priority. In this paper, a progressive ROI coding method using the enbedded coder is presented, and an efficient transmission method for the ROI information. Experimental results show that the proposed progressive ROI coding technique can be effectively used for image coding applications such as web browsing and image database searching system.

  • JPEG2000, the standard of still image compression based on wavelet, will be widely used. One of the greatest characteristics of JPEG2000 is to offer ROI(Region-Of-Interest) coding. This is to compress with high quality the region that the user wants better than the other region. JPEG2000 and ROI have different parameters, which are tile size and ROI size, wavelet filter type and ROI shape and its location, codeblock size and number of ROI, number of DWT decomposition level and ROI importance, and number of quality layer and low resolution sub-band importance. In this paper, we shows the correlation of the parameters and ROI coding methods through experiments. This helps an application select the parameters and the methods to meet the application.

  • In many image-coding applications such as web browsing, image databases, and telemedicine, it is needed that only a region of interest(ROI) is transmitted and then reconstructed first before the whole image is transmitted and reconstructed. The Maxshift method has been used as a standard one in this research about ROI coding in JPEG2000. However Maxshift method can process only one ROI, this paper suggests an improved Maxshift method which can process Multiple ROI haying the priority order. In this method, the ROI coefficient which has the high priority order can be moved to upward two bit plane in order to process multiple ROI.

  • 요즘 Web-Browsing, 영상 데이터 베이스 그리고 원격 진료와 같은 여러 응용 분야에서는 압축할 이미지내의 사용자의 관심 영역을 다른 영역보다 더 우선적으로 처리할 필요가 있다. 즉, 영상을 전송하는데 있어서 관심영역(ROI : Region Of Interest)을 먼저 전송하고, 영상 복원 시에도 영상의 전체 영역 중 ROI 영역이 우선적으로 복원하여야 하는 경우가 있다. Maxshift 방법은 JPEG2000 ROI Coding 에서 표준으로 사용하고 있다. 그러나 Maxshift 방법은 단지 하나의 ROI 영역만을 처리 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 방법을 이용하여 우선 순위를 가지는 Multiple ROI Coding 기법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법에서는 계수값들의 비트 플레인에 대한 스케일링 변수를 이용하여 우선 순위를 가지는 Multiple ROI 부호화가 가능함을 보이고, 저 비트율에서 Maxshift 방법보다 좀 더 우수한 성능을 확인하였다.
