  • The vibrational characteristics of nonuniform circular rods have been studied theoretically and experimentally in this paper. The differential equation of torsional motion expressed in terms of the angular displacement has been solved exactly and approximately for a stepped circular rod and for a conically-tapered rod. Solutions of the boundary-value problem have yielded the natural frequencies, mode shapes and forced responses of the rods. The theoretical solutions of forced response have been verified by comparing them with experimental ones.

  • Characteristics of micro carbon structures fabricated with laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) are investigated. An argon ion laser (λ=514.5nm) and ethylene gas were utilized as the energy source and precursor, respectively. The laser beam was focused onto a graphite substrate to produce carbon deposit through thermal decomposition of the precursor. Average growth rate of a carbon rod increased for increasing laser power and pressure. Micro carbon rods with good surface quality were obtained at near the threshold condition. Micro carbon rods with aspect ratio of about 100 and micro tubular structures were fabricated to demonstrate the possible application of this method to the fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis of the micro carbon structures revealed that the carbon rods are consisting of amorphous carbon.

  • Accurate measurement of the reactivity worth of safety rods is very important for the safe reactor operation, in normal and emergency conditions. In this paper, the reactivity worth of safety rods in Heavy Water Zero Power Reactor (HWZPR) in the new lattice pitch is measured by advanced source jerk method. The average of the results related to two different detectors is equal to 29.88 mk. In order to verify the result, this parameter was compared to the previously measured value by subcritical to critical approach. Different experiment results are finally compared with corresponding calculated result. Difference between the average experimental and calculated results is equal to 2.2%.

  • The present paper is focused on analyzing the delamination of inhomogeneous multilayered rods of circular cross-section loaded in torsion. The rods are made of concentric longitudinal layers of individual thickness and material properties. A delamination crack is located arbitrary between layers. Thus, the internal and external crack arms have circular and ring-shaped cross-sections, respectively. The layers exhibit continuous material inhomogeneity in radial direction. Besides, the material has non-linear elastic behavior. The delamination is analyzed in terms of the strain energy release rate. General solution to the strain energy release rate is derived by considering the energy balance. The solution is applied to analyze the delamination of cantilever rod. For verification, the strain energy release rate is derived also by considering the complementary strain energy.

  • In order to evaluate the bond performance of domestic larch glulam and the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) rod, the specimen with the GFRP rod bonded-in domestic larch glulam for pull-out test was produced. The test was carried out using various specimens with different gluing depth, width of glue-line and type of adhesive. The cantilever type rahmen structure specimen with bonded-in GFRP rods was produced based on the result of pull-out test, and its moment resistance performance was compared and examined with the moment resistance performance of slotted-in steel plate specimen. As a result of the pull-out test, the most excellent bond performance was found when the insertion depth of GFRP rods was 5 times larger than the diameter of GFRP rods. When the glue-line thickness was 1 mm, the bond performance improved by 17%~29% in comparison to the bond performance in the case of the glue-line thickness of 2 mm. Also, the bonded strength of the specimen used with poly-urethane adhesive was 2.9~4.0 times greater than the bonded strength of specimen used with resorcinol adhesive. The cantilever type rahmen structure specimen with bonded-in GFRP rods showed the moment resistance performance 0.82 times lower in comparison to the slotted-in steel plate specimen used with the drift pin, but the initial stiffness was similar as 0.93 times.

  • The use of carbon fiber rods is a promising technology of increasing flexural and shear strength of deficient reinforced concrete members. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the fatigue behavior and strengthening effects of the strengthened bridge deck with isotropic and othortropic carbon fiber rod. This study shows a fatigue loading, compliance and S-N Curve between strengthened isotropically and othortropically. Then estimate the effective fatigue behavior of RC slab using composite rods that are inserted in high special purposed polymer mortar.

  • Recently several PWR Nuclear Plant experienced fuel rod fretting wear failures due to Flow Induced Vibration. When such multi-span supported fuel assembly has vibration excitation, it is important to know how fretting wears are progress and when the fuel rods are start to failure. In this study, we estimate the amount of wear depth using Archard theory when the fuel rod starts to relative motion against spacer grid dimples.

  • In recent years, RC structures need reinforcement due to physical and chemical deterioration, reduction of serviceability and structural capacity. For reinforcement of RC structures, steel plate attachment, area increase and composite fiber sheet attachment methods are used, but there are some problems like weight increase, workability, quality control and fire resistance capacity. This study presents the effectiveness of flexural reinforcement of RC beams using composite rods that are inserted in high strength special purposed polymer mortar.

  • Many techniques are available for destructive and nondestructive measurement of mechanical hardness. The ultrasonic method could be widely applicable as a nondestructive technique. Many studies have examined how changes in the mechanical hardness affect the longitudinal velocity of ultrasonic waves. This approach aims to estimate the overall velocity variations in specimens. However, proper nondestructive examination techniques are needed as effective tools for analyzing the effects of heat treatment on the surface of the specimens. Therefore, in this study, the effect on the hardness of piston rods was nondestructively measured using surface ultrasonic waves. The hardness after heat treatment was investigated at various depths in the specimens, and the velocity of the surface ultrasonic waves was measured with respect to the hardness of the piston rods. In addition, finite element method simulations were performed to confirm the behavior of the waves.

  • Recent popular trends in pressurized water reactor(PWR) fuel management are to extend the cycle length and to employ the low-leakage core designs for the optimal utilization of the uranium resources. In control strategy incorporated with the fuel management, turnable absorbers are required to control the power peaking and to ensure a negative moderator temperature coefficient during reactor operation. In this study, the nuclear characteristics and the optimal allocation of gadolinium-poisoned rods within the fuel assembly are considered using KWU SAV 79 A Code Package. First, analyses are carried out to compare the nuclear characteristics of the fuel assemblies contain-ing WABA(Wet Annular Burnable Absorber) and Gadolinium burnable absorbers respectively. The analyses show that the gadolinium-bearing fuel assembly has peculiar depletion characteristics ensuing from the very large thermal neutron absorption cross section. Peculiar characteristics of gadolinium provide basis for the optimal allocation of Gd rods in fuel assembly. Second, the methodology of an optimal allocation of gadolinium-poisoned rods within the fuel assembly is developed and applied to some nuclear designs.
