  • In this study, travel time data collection of mine equipments was conducted in an underground mine using a reverse Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) system. In the reverse RFID system, RFID readers and antennas are mounted on mine equipments, and RFID tags are attached to the underground mine gallery. Indoor experiments were performed to analyze how RFID reader transmission power levels affect tag readable area and tag recognition rates. The results showed that travel time measurement become precise when the reader transmission power was reduced, however tag recognition rates were reduced. The field experiments indicated that setting the reader transmission power to 28 dBm maintained the tag recognition rate while minimizing the tracking location error. In addition, the results revealed that the reverse RFID system can be used successfully in an underground mine to collect the travel time data of haulage trucks.

  • In apartment type of housing, if resident's vehicle is registered in central control office and RFID TAG is issued, identification can be recognized from the time of entrance into parking lot and intelligent parking guide system can be activated based on the residents' profile. Parking Guide System leads a vehicle to the available parking space which is closest to the entrance gate of the vehicle's owner. And when residents forget where they parked their cars, they can query to the Parking Guide and Management System and get responses about the location. For the correct operation of this system, it is necessary to find out where the residents' cars have parked in real time and which lot is available for parking of other cars. RFID is very fancy solution for this system. RFID reader gathers the ID information in RFID TAGs in parked cars and updates the DB up to date. But, when non-residents' cars are parked inside apartment, RFID reader cannot identify them nor know the exact empty/occupied status of parking spaces because they don't react to RFID reader's query. So for the exact detection of empty/occupied status, we suggest the combined use of ultrasonic sensors and RFID. We designed a tree topology with intermediate data aggregators. The depth of tree is normally more than 3 from root (central office) to leaves (individual parking lots). The depth of 2 in tree topology brings about the bottleneck in communication and maintenance. We also designed the information fields used in RFID networks and Sensor Networks.

  • This paper presents a novel multiple orthogonal subcarrier modulation based UHF band RFID communication system. In tag-to-reader communication, the demonstration system can deliver 1.6 Mbps through four subcarriers. To improve data rate while suppressing increase in circuit complexity, tag employs square-waves as the subcarriers and uses individual load modulators for each subcarrier. By using multiple orthogonal subcarrier based modulation, proposed communication system can be operated under existing UHF band RFID regulation. In reader, an OFDM demodulator is used. Since the tag backscatters the reader's CW carrier, carrier frequency offset compensation is not necessary in reader demodulator. Experimental results show that the demonstration system achieves a bit error rate of 10-5 at an Eb/N0 of 10.8 dB.

  • A fixed 900 MHz near field RFID system is developed to provide information; market efficiency, jewelry information and the circulation history information in real time, to the customers. The developed RFID system for the jewelry management consists of a reader, antenna and a CPU in a integrated type. The system size is $38\;{\times}\;25\;{\times}\;19\;cm^3$, the operated frequency band of the reader antenna is 905 ~ 926 MHz. The maximum gain of the embedded reader antenna is 5.1 dBii(@ 910 MHz). Honeycomb tag manufactured by RSI Co. is suitable for the jewelry management than another other commercial near field tags. The tagging method and the tagging location of Honeycomb tag are suggested. In the suggested system, the maximum reading range is about 16 cm, and the zone with 100 % recognition rate is 10 cm from the radom of the reader antenna.

  • In the RFID system, multiple tags respond in the process of identifying multiple tags in the reader's interrogation zone, resulting in collisions. Tag collision occurs when two or more tags respond to one reader, so that the reader cannot identify any tags. These collisions make it hard for the reader to identify all tags within the interrogation zone and delays the identifying time. In some cases, the reader cannot identify any tags. The reader needs the anti-collision algorithm which can quickly identify all the tags in the interrogation zone. The proposed algorithm efficiently divides tag groups through an efficient separation to respond, preventing collisions. Moreover, the proposed algorithm identifies tags without checking all the bits in the tags. The prediction with efficient separation reduces the number of the requests from the reader.

  • This paper studies the magnetic coupling between two adjacent loop antennas that are parallel to each other in a plane and presents a new practical method to avoid the resulting magnetic coupling interference. The study focuses on the high frequency radio-frequency identification (RFID) system for casino applications, where several loop antennas are closely built into a game table to monitor gaming chips. In this case, neighboring loop antennas may severely interfere with each other by magnetic coupling, which leads to the malfunction of the RFID system. In this paper, we present a practical loop antenna with a new loop switch circuit for avoiding magnetic coupling. The loop switch circuit is integrated with a matching circuit and automatically operated by using an interrogating signal from a reader. We verified the validity of the proposed design by showing that an RFID reader with the proposed antenna can exactly and separately read the gaming chips placed on the different betting zones of a game table.

  • In this paper, it is studied anti-collision algorithm based on the transmission protocol for RFID baseband system of the lSO/IEC 18000-6 Type-C regulation and designed the baseband part of RFID reader system using FPGA. To compensate this weak point of the slot random aloha algorithm which must have a long time to be dumped before deciding an appropriate slot size according to the number of surrounding tag, we suggested how to apply Bit By Bit algorithm to be able to recognize the tag when the tag is clashing. The design of the baseband part in the RFID reader system is accomplish by use of the ISE9.1i and I made an experiment on it targeting Spartan2. Construction verification is measured each block through Logic Analyzer and I can verify it has no error. I also compared and analyzed the performance between proposed algorithm and past algorithm and verified the improvement of performance.

  • Reader-to-reader interference in RFID system is occurred due to the use of limited number of frequencies, and this is the main cause of read rate reduction in the passive RFID tags. Therefore, in order to maximize the read rate under the circumstances of limited frequency resources, it is necessary to minimize the frequency interference among RFID readers. This paper presents a hybrid FDM/TDM constraint satisfaction problem models for frequency interference minimization problems of the RFID readers, and assigns optimal channels to each readers using conventional backtracking search algorithms. A depth first search based on backtracking are accomplished to find solutions of constraint satisfaction problems. At this moment, a variable ordering algorithm is very important to find a solution quickly. Variable ordering algorithms applied in the experiment are known as efficient in the graph coloring. To justify the performance of the proposed constraint satisfaction problem model, optimal channels for each readers in the passive UHF RFID system are allocated by using computer simulation satisfying various interference constraints.

  • Recently UHF RFID system has drawn a great deal of attention because of its potential to revolutionize supply chain management. An important characterization of the performance of a RFID system is 'interrogation range', which is defined as the maximum distance between a reader and a tag. Forward-link interrogation range is defined as the maximum distance from which the tag receives just enough power to turn on and back-scatter, and reverse-tink interrogation range is the maximum distance from which the reader can detect this back-scattered signal. A link balance has to be found between the two interrogation ranges. In this paper, the interrogation range equations are formulated in both forward-link and reverse-link and a trade-off between the two values is investigated in order to maximize the interrogation range. As a result, it is observed that the gain of the reader antenna, the isolation of the circulator, and the phase noise of the local oscillator with range correlation effect mainly determine the reverse-link interrogation range.
