  • RF coil is an important component of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system and the performance of RF coil is one of major factors for high SNR images. Sensitivity and RF field uniformity are parameters for evaluating RF coil performance. Since the B1 field is induced by RF coil, MR signal is strongly affected by RF coil structure and arrangement. In receiving MR signal, the RF coil sensitivity to MR Signal is also determined by the induced B1 field of RF coil. Therefore, the spatial distribution of B1 field must be verified. In this work, we performed computer simulation of the basic RF coil structures using Matlab and verified their sensitivity and uniformity through their B1 field distribution. This work will be useful for the advanced multi-channel RF coil design.

  • Purpose : B1 field of birdcage RF (radiofrequency) coil that is used most for brain imaging in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) decreases toward endring from the coil center. We investigated how much RE B1 homogeneity effect the endcap shield brings form the coil center as it towards to endcap region. Materials and Methods : We compared RF B1 field distribution by each finite difference time domain (EDTD) simulations for lowpass, highpass and hybrid birdcage RF coils. We selected the highpass birdcage RF coil that was the highest RF B1 field condition as simulation result, and studied how much RF B1 homogeneity effect was occurred when endcap shield was applied to endring area. Results : B1 field of the highpass birdcage RF coil was higher than other birdcage RF coil types as simulation result. However, the RF B1 homogeneity was lower than other coil types. RE B1 field of highpass birdcage RF coil with endcap shield is similar with RF B1 field of hybrid birdcage RF coil and the overall RE B1 homogeneity in sagittal direction was better. Conclusion In this paper, proposed method can apply improving RF B1 homogeneity of RF coil in clinical examination.

  • The RF shimming technique has been used to improve the transmit RF field homogeneity in highfield MRI. In the RF shimming technique, the amplitude and phase of the driving currents in each coil element are optimized to get homogenous flip angle or uniform image intensity. The inductive and capacitive coupling between the coil elements may degrade the RF field homogeneity if not taken into account in the optimization procedure. In this paper, we have analyzed the coupling effects on the RF shimming using a sixteen-element TEM RF coil model operating at 300 MHz. We have found that the coupling effects on the RF shimming can be reduced by putting high dielectric material between the active rung and the shield.

  • Using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), carbon thin film as electron field emitter were fabricated. These carbon thin film were deposited on Si(100) substrate at several RF power. These film were estimated by raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and field emission. The field electron emission property of these carbon thin film was estimated by a diode technique. As the result, we observed that the field emission properties of these films were promoted by higher RF power. These results are explained as change of surface morphology and structural properties of carbon thin film

  • Currently, graphene is a topic of very active research in fields from science to potential applications. For various radio-frequency (RF) circuit applications including low-noise amplifiers, the unique ambipolar nature of graphene field-effect transistors can be utilized for high-performance frequency multipliers, mixers and high-speed radiometers. Potential integration of graphene on Silicon substrates with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility would also benefit future RF systems. The future success of the RF circuit applications depends on vertical and lateral scaling of graphene metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors to minimize parasitics and improve gate modulation efficiency in the channel. In this paper, we highlight recent progress in graphene materials, devices, and circuits for RF applications. For passive RF applications, we show its transparent electromagnetic shielding in Ku-band and transparent antenna, where its success depends on quality of materials. We also attempt to discuss future applications and challenges of graphene.

  • To enhance the ionization level of I-PVD and reduce the coil voltage two approaches were tried and as a diagnostic, optical emission spectroscopy and impedance analysis of the plasma was done with a range of Ar pressures and RF power along with XRD analysis of deposited Ag films. RF sputtering power was pulsed with various on/off time scales to recover the ICP quenched by sputtered metals. This in average enhances the ionization of the sputtered atoms with 10 ms/10 ms and 100 ms/100ms pulse on/off time duration and gives higher (200) preferred orientation over (111) in deposited Ag films. Secondly, Small axial B field about 8G remarkably reduced RF coil sputtering and showed scaled relationship between RF power and magnetic field strength for optimal process condition. From OES of Ar0 and Ar+, wave-like dispersion structure appeared and reduced the coil voltage about 20% at very weak field strength of 8G. This should be studied further to have nay relation with low mode helicon wave launching.

  • Radio-frequency (RF) amplifiers based on direct current (DC) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) have low-noise performance for precision physics experiments. Gain curves of SQUID RF amplifiers depend on several parameters of the SQUID and operation conditions. We are developing SQUID RF amplifiers for application to measure very weak RF signals from ultra-low-temperature high-magnetic-field microwave cavity in axion search experiments. In this study, we designed, fabricated and characterized SQUID RF amplifiers with different SQUID parameters, such as number of input coil turn, shunt resistance value of the junction and coupling capacitance in the input coil, and compared the results.

  • This paper demonstrates the use of the convex optimization to localize the transverse magnetic $B_1^+$ field in regions of interest for recently proposed multi-sectioned alternating impedance coils and the traditional transmission line coil. An approach based on different axial slices to identical RF coils except upper stripline structure is investigated. Electromagnetic simulation results are compared for RF coils and discussed in detail at 7.0 T.

  • An electron Boltzmann equation is solved numerically to calculate the electron energy distribution functions in plasma discharge which is generated by radio-frequency (RF) and microwave frequency electric field. The maintenance field strengths are determined self-consistently by solving the homogeneous electron Boltzmann equation in the Lorentz approximation expressed by 2nd order differential equation and an additional particle balance equation expressed by integro-differential equation. By using this numerical code, the electron energy distribution functions in argon discharge are calculated in the range from RF to microwave frequency. The influence of frequency of the HF electric field on the electron energy distribution functions and ionization rate are investigated.
